Location 📌 Weligama

Weligama, translated as sandy village, is a great place to learn to surf, about a two kilometre stretch of shallow sandy beach. One of the best places in south Sri Lanka to discover a connection with the ocean and catch your first wave. Get there for first light and surf till sunrise, it usually quiet until 8am so a good time to practice on uncontended waves. The bay is protected somewhat from the wind, if the rest of the coast is blown it can be better here. 400m ride on a slow, low power wave. Many lefts and rights that appear at different tides the best swell from the south west. Easily be surfed when small, holds up to 5ft. A big swell on a beginners break is kook carnage with boards flying everywhere, very entertaining to watch. Expect learner drop-ins and to make some new buddies out the back..

Location 📌 Unawatuna

is a cautionary tale for the rest of Sri Lanka’s south coast. Where there was once a flawless crescent of golden sand that swept along a palm-lined shore with turquoise waters that had just enough surf to make for ideal swimming conditions, there is now one of Sri Lanka’s less appealing beach towns.

The beautiful water is still there and you can still find decent patches of sand, but in several places greed has replaced good taste and common sense. Bulldozers have pushed huge boulders right up to and beyond the high tide line, allowing for the construction of some especially ugly hotels and cafes. Ironically, authorities have actually enforced setbacks on the west half of Unawatuna’s beach and the result is much more salubrious.

Location 📌 Hikkaduwa

– With its impressive reefs and abundance of fish, Hikkaduwa is recognized as one of the best places for and on the Southwest (in the southwest season of November to April). With a reputed and long-running school located in the town itself, PADI diving instructors are available throughout the season for training and certification as well as leading more experienced divers in some of the country’s best ship wreck and reef dives.

As beautiful as Sri Lanka is on land, it is equally matched with its spectacular scenery. Beneath the waters of the Indian Ocean lies a separate world of tropical fish, coloured coral and mysterious shipwrecks. Located 5 to 9 degrees north of the equator means that the Sri Lanka seas are perennially warm and when in season they remain at an inviting temperature of around 27C. Sea conditions are governed by the two monsoons – the northeast and southwest- permitting calm seas and clear waters along the south and western coastline from November to April and from April to October along the eastern coast of the island. Diving and snorkeling in Sri Lanka is all the more interesting because of the different types of reef that is found in the seas around the island. There are sandstone platforms, coral banks, boulders and rock cliffs that are found both close as well as far away from the shore. Most of the reefs found on the western coast are sandstone platforms. In the Southwest and southern coast rock boulder reefs are more common as are small fringing coral reefs.

Location 📌 Pigeon Island Nilaveli

Floating in the great blue 1km offshore, Pigeon Island, with its powdery white sands and glittering coral gardens, tantalises with possibilities. A nesting area for rock pigeons, the island is beautiful enough, with rock pools and paths running through thickets, but it’s the underwater landscape that’s the real star. The reef here is shallow, making snorkelling almost as satisfying as diving, and it’s home to dozens of corals, hundreds of reef fish (including blacktip reef sharks) and turtles.

Location 📌 Galle Dutch Fort

Galle is one of the major cities located in the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It is also a favorite travelling destination of both local and foreign visitors. Galle fort is a symbol of Pride to the Galle City. It is an ancient construction which was built by the Portuguese and Dutch in between the 16th and 19th Centuries. UNESCO designated this historical fort as a World Heritage site in 1988.

Galle Fort is a good evidence to illustrate the European influence in Sri Lanka, between 16-19th centuries. The Portuguese were the First European nation to land in Sri Lanka; they landed at Galle in 1505. The Portuguese then ruled most of the coastal areas in the island, including Galle, Matara and Colombo. The Portuguese made the Fort in the late 16th century for their military purposes and defended Galle from local and foreign attacks. Their first construction was very basic; it included three bastions and a rampart. The Portuguese then used Galle fort as a prison camp in later years.

The Dutch army captured the fort in 1640 with 2500 soldiers. They received the support of King Seethawaka Rajasinghe and the local people. The battle between the Dutch and Portuguese later became popular and was called ‘Siege of Galle’ in 1640. Dutch rulers then modified Portuguese fort into a huge structure while expanding its military strength. They built a protestant church, gun house, residence for commanders, public administration buildings, warehouses, residential quarters and trade buildings in the 19th century. Mud, granite stones and coral had been used as materials to build the fort. Then the British army captured Galle including the fort in 1796.
