Isurumuniya is a Buddhist temple situated near to the Tissa Wewa (Tisa tank) in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. There are four carvings of special interest in this Vihara. They are the Isurumuniya Lovers, Elephant Pond and The Royal Family.

This is the place where the mythical Pulasthi Rishi was said to live and the place of which the mythical King Ravana was born.[citation needed] The temple was built by King Devanampiya Tissa (307 BC to 267 BC) who ruled in the ancient Sri Lankan capital of Anuradhapura. After 500 children of high-caste were ordained, Isurumuniya was built for them to reside.[citation needed] King Kasyapa I (473-491 AD) again renovated this viharaya[citation needed] and named it as "Boupulvan, Kasubgiri Radmaha Vehera".[citation needed] This name is derived from names of his 2 daughters and his name. There is a viharaya connected to a cave and above is a cliff. A small stupa is built on it. It can be seen that the constructional work of this stupa belongs to the present period. Lower down on both sides of a cleft, in a rock that appears to rise out of a pool, have been carved the figures of elephants. On the rock is carved the figure of a horse. The carving of Isurumuniya lovers on the slab has been brought from another place and placed it there. A few yards away from this vihara is the Ranmasu Uyana.

Kala Wewa, built by the King Datusena in 460 A.D, is a twin reservoir complex (Kala Wewa & Balalu Wewa) which has a capacity of 123 million cubic meters. This reservoir complex has facilitated with a stone made spillway and three main sluices. From the central major sluice, a 40 feet wide central conveys water to feed thousands of acres of paddy lands and ends at the historical capital Anuradhapura city tank Tissa Wewa meandering over 87 km (54 mi) at a slope of 6 inches per mile and is another wonder of primeval hydraulic engineering facility in ancient Ceylon.

This reservoir was built by the King Dhathusena who ruled the country during 455 – 473 CE in the 5th century.[1]

Tamil invaders who arrived from South India ruled the north part of the country during the period from 429 to 455 AD. King Dhathusena defeated the invaders and united the country and then he wanted to rebuild the irrigation system by constructing several tanks, canals, etc., in and round the kingdo

The story of Devendra Mulacharin who gifted world renowned creations to Deyata ..

This is to tell you about Devendra Mulacharin, the master designer of the Hela art creations such as the wedding hall, the pattirippuwa, the moat, the cloud wall of the lake and the Ulpange where the kings of the Temple of the Tooth heard cases. The category for that. May be settlements

So this unique engineer or designer called Devendra Mulacharin has worked under three kings. He is said to have been born in 1747. That is during the last days of King Sri Vijaya Rajasinghe. King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe, King Rajadhirajasinghe and King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe have served under Devendra Mulacharin.King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe was impressed by the talents of Devendra Mulachari and in 1780 bestowed the nickname 'Mulachari' with a golden forehead. He received many villages as gifts for his royal service. It is said that Devendra Mulacharin built a house in the village of Arattana in Udunuwara and settled down. The people of that generation are still in Arattana village in Udunuwara.

So the most unique creation made by Devendra Mulachari in this Handase is the Atalas Atalla or Patthirippu. King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last king of Sinhala, made the pamphlet for the purpose of visiting the city for the king and watching the sports on the field. At the suggestion of the Diyawadana Nilame of Dehigama, the royal kitchen was demolished and this place was built on that spot. The King has highly favored the plan given by Devendra Mulachari to Patthirippu

Also, the wedding hall that can still be seen near the palace was built by Devendra Mulachari himself. According to the original plan, the length of the wedding hall is 19.75 meters and the width is 11.65 meters. There are sixty-four ornately carved towers. ‍ The wedding hall is a masterpiece of Kandyan architecture.

Also, the cloud wall around the lake known as the Milky Way near the palace was created by Devendra Mulacharin.

Devendra Mulacharin has been in charge of the crown pallets, gold pallets, throne pallets and weapons pallets in the palace. It is also stated that a special seat in the royal palace was reserved for him in honor of his skill.

There is another special point. It is said that King Devendra Mulacharin and King Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe had the same appearance. His dress is similar to that of the royal court. According to the king's order, Devendra Mulachari used the word "riyandanda" frequently. Due to this the king did not want the child to try to change his clothes.

Somehow the ministers have plotted to overthrow Mulachari and the king. The ministers had told the king that the timber had been shortened by the timber brought in for construction. It is said that because they slandered the king, the king believed them and ordered that the index finger of the priest's right hand be cut off. Legend has it that the Mulachariya who was shocked by this had jumped into the Kandy lake and committed su***de. That was in 1812. It is said that the king was shocked by his death.

The tragic end of this incredible designer who made many creations for future generations has come to an end

It is also believed that due to this order of the king, Devendra Mulachari and his group fled Kandy and changed their name and lived in hiding in the Liyanwala area. It is learned that the house of Devendra Mulacharin in Arattana village in Udunuwara has now collapsed. The well he used, a staircase, and a large Kurahan stone in the house remain. It is also stated that the Sannas he received from the kings are still safe with the descendants of that dynasty.

The garden was established in 1861, under George Henry Kendrick Thwaites as an experimental cultivation of Cinchona, a commercial crop thriving at the time. Once after the Tea replaced the Cinchona, it was turned into an experimental Tea cultivation. In 1884 it transformed to a garden. Since then many sub tropical and some temperate plants were planted in the gardens.

Bogoda Wooden Bridge was built in the 16th century during the Dambadeniya era. This is said to be the oldest surviving wooden bridge in Sri Lanka.[citation needed] The bridge is situated at 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) west of Badulla. All parts of this bridge were constructed from wood, including the use of wooden nails as fixing material. The roof tiles show the influence of Kingdom of Kandy. The bridge was built across the Gallanda Oya, which linked Badulla and Kandy on an ancient route.

Buddhists believe that this site has been visited by Gautama Buddha, and it is regarded as one of the Solosmasthana, the 16 sacred places in the country.] On the 8th year after attaining the Enlightenment, the Lord Buddha made His 3rd visit to Kelaniya on the invitation by a king of Naga people named Maniakkitha. During this visit, a local chieftain named Indaka invited Lord Buddha to visit his place in Badulla. At the end of sermons made by Lord Buddha there, Indaka had wanted something to worship in memory of Lord Buddha's visit. The Lord Buddha is said to have given him a few of His hairs and a few drops of sweat that turned into pearls (mukthaka). Indaka had enshrined these sacred hair and pearls in a stupa, believed to be the stupa here. Indaka, the chieftain of then Deva people is now regarded as a deity, reigning the Namunukula mauntain range] and Muthiyanga

88.64 km2 (34.22 sq mi)

According to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Sinharaja is the country's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest. More than 60% of the trees are endemic and many of them are considered rare.

The hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests ecoregion, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. The reserve's name translates as Lion Kingdom.

Polonnaruwa was established by the Cholas as capital city under the name Jananathapuram in the 10th century. Under this period systematic destruction of the Buddhist civilisation took place in the northern plains of Sri Lanka. Raja Raja Chola I built Vanavan Mahadevisvaram, a Shiva temple at Polonnaruwa named after his queen, which presently is known as Siva Devale. The temple among other contained Ganesha and Parvati statues of bronze.[6] north and central parts of Sri Lanka was under this period ruled under Rajendra Chola I directly as a Chola province. However, following the year 1070 AD ended the Chola rule in the island, and Polonnaruwa was captured by Vijayabahu I of Polonnaruwa also known as Vijayabahu the great.

Starting from Mahanagakula on the south of the Walawe river, Vijayabahu dispatched three armies to attack Polonnaruwa from three fronts. One army was sent along the western shore of the country to Mahathittha port to deal with any reinforcements arriving from South India. Afterwards, part of this army moved towards Polonnaruwa and attacked from the North-west, while the other part held the ports to prevent reinforcements from arriving. A second army was sent from the east across Magama to attack Polonnaruwa from the east. The third and main force advanced across the country, led by the king. Surrounded by these three armies, Polonnaruwa was besieged for seven months before king Vijayabahu’s forces entered the city. In 1070, Vijayabahu became the ruler of Polonnaruwa. At that time Sri Lanka was known as Thambapanni.

Trade and agriculture flourished under the patronage of the famous grand son of king Vijayabahu I of Polonnaruwa, king Prakramabahu the great, who was so adamant that no drop of water falling from the heavens was to be wasted and each was to be used toward the development of the land.[citation needed] Hence, irrigation systems that are far superior to those of the Anuradhapura Age were constructed during Parakramabahu's reign – systems which to this day supply the water necessary for paddy cultivation during the scorching dry season in the east of the country. The greatest of these systems is the Parakrama Samudra or the Sea of Parakrama which were also used as a large sea going ship anchorage via Mahaweli River. The Kingdom of Polonnaruwa was completely self-sufficient during King Parakramabahu's reign.

ancient temple belong to the reign of the 4th in Gampola era, which consist with two ancient cave temples. The walls of the cave temples are decorated with frescos. One cave contains a shirine and the other and ancient stupa(pagoda). It is believed that the relics of Buddha are enshrines in this sthpa. This was built by an Indian Brahmon named "Sri Rama"....Ranawana purana rajamaha viharaya is most probably one of the most beautiful temples in Sri Lanka. Lanka.

falls have been named after the legendary king Ravana, which is connected to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to legend, it is said that Ravana (who was the king of Sri Lanka at the time) had kidnapped princess Sita, and had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave. The reason for the kidnapping is said to be a revenge for slicing off the nose of his sister by Rama (husband of Sita) and his brother Laxmana. At the time, the cave was surrounded with thick forests in the midst of wilderness. It is also believed that Rama’s queen bathed in a pool that accumulated the water falling from this waterfall. They believed that Ravana has played the Ravanahatha over here

to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, this site was selected by King Kashyapa (477 – 495 AD) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure sinhagiri, the Lion Rock (an etymology similar to Sinhapura, the Sanskrit name of Singapore, the Lion City).

The capital and the royal palace was abandoned after the king's death. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning.

temple complex dates back to the first century BCE.] It has five caves under a vast overhanging rock, carved with a drip line to keep the interiors dry. In 1938 the architecture was embellished with arched colonnades and gabled entrances. Inside the caves, the ceilings are painted with intricate patterns of religious images following the contours of the rock. There are images of the Lord Buddha and bodhisattvas, as well as various gods and goddesses.

The Dambulla cave monastery is still functional and remains the best-preserved ancient edifice in Sri Lanka. This complex dates from the third and second centuries BC, when it was already established as one of the largest and most important monasteries. Valagamba of Anuradhapura is traditionally thought to have converted the caves into a temple in the first century BC. Exiled from Anuradhapura, he sought refuge here from South Indian usurpers for 15 years. After reclaiming his capital, the King built a temple in thankful worship. Many other kings added to it later and by the 11th century, the caves had become a major religious centre and still are. Nissanka Malla of Polonnaruwa gilded the caves and added about 70 Buddha statues in 1190. During the 18th century, the caves were restored and painted by the Kingdom of Kandy.
