The Most Historically Significant Cultural Parade in the World

Buddhist Literature reveals a plethora of processions and celebrations held in high reverence of Lord Buddha. The perahara procession gained prominence during the rule of Emperor Asoka in India. The Kandy Perahara is a vivid demonstration of these traditional practices, many of which have been influenced by both Buddhist and Hindu religious traditions.

However, they also serve as a powerful showcase of the rich Sinhala cultural heritage. A significant portion of these traditions draws inspiration from depictions found in the "Dantha Dhathu Charitha" or "Dalada Siritha" (a book detailing customs related to the sacred Tooth Relic), authored during the reign of Parakramabahu IV (1302-1326) of Kurunagala.

Sitting atop Galle’s hilltops in a 17th-century UNESCO-listed fort, Amangalla’s location has a storied 300-year history of hospitality, previously welcoming steamship passengers and curious travellers over prior centuries.
