Today is Full Moon Day 🌕

Every full moon (usually one a month) is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. Each of the full moons has its own name and they are days to commemorate key events in Buddhism.
Today is Madin Full Moon Day, this poya marks the Buddha’s first visit to his father’s palace following his enlightenment.

Every full moon day is known as a Poya in the Sinhala language; this is when a practicing Sinhalese Buddhist visits a temple for religious observances. There are 13 or 14 Poyas per year. The term poya is derived from the Pali and Sanskrit work uposatha (from upa + vas “to fast”), primarily signifying “fast day”. Generally shops and businesses are closed on Poya days, and the sale of alcohol and meat is forbidden.

That’s cute, isn’t it? 😍🐘🐘

They sniffed each other briefly and then entwined trunks. This is a way for elephants, especially younger elephants, to greet each other - kind of like a handshake.
It’s also a playful game and they both seem to enjoy it, wrapping and unwrapping their trunks, tugging a little but not much.

Today is World Wildlife Day. On this day, people all around the world hold events to celebrate the natural world and to raise awareness of the importance of protecting wildlife.
It is a United Nations International day to celebrate all the world’s wild animals and plants and the contribution that they make to our lives and the health of the planet.
This date was chosen as it is the birthday of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, signed in 1973.
This year’s theme for World Wildlife Day is “Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation”. The theme is aimed at looking at a shared sustainable future in the digital era of wildlife conservation.

The new, nearly 200-mile Pekoe Trail—which winds through Sri Lanka’s central highlands, passing remote villages and tea estates—was voted the Best Of The World 2024 Reader’s Choice Winner.

Sri Lanka is virtually synonymous with tea. The island nation is one of the world’s top producers of tea leaves. Now visitors can trace the footsteps of historic planters on the new trail, which is also the country’s first long-distance walking route.

Starting just outside Kandy, the trail follows the 19th-century tracks upon which workers and horse-drawn carts transported freshly plucked leaves. Hikers can even stop to take a cooking class or savor a cup of aromatic Ceylon tea.

Waiting for the train...
Take a short hike to The Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the Bridge in the Sky. This is a brick and concrete railway bridge located in Demodara near Ella, Sri Lanka. The bridge was built during the British colonial era in the early 20th century and is considered a masterpiece of engineering. The bridge spans 91 meters and is supported by nine arches, hence its name.

Popular rumours suggest that when construction work commenced on the bridge, WWI began between the empires of Europe and the assigned for this site was reallocated to Britain’s War related projects at the battlefront. As a result, the work came to a standstill, leading the locals build the bridge with and , but without steel.

The Nine Arch Bridge is now a popular tourist attraction in Ella and is often used as a backdrop for photography 🤗📸

Today is Full Moon Day 🌝🙏🏻

Every full moon (usually one a month) is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. Each of the full moons has its own name and they are days to commemorate key events in Buddhism.
Today is Duruthu Full Moon Poya.
This poya day is celebrated on the first full moon in January and marks the first of Buddha’s three visits to Sri Lanka, on the first full moon after his enlightenment.

Every full moon day is known as a Poya in the Sinhala language; this is when a practicing Sinhalese Buddhist visits a temple for religious observances. There are 13 or 14 Poyas per year. Surfing in Sri Lanka has been on the bucket list of many travellers the last years. Now is the best time for your surfing trip to the southern Sri Lankan beaches! 🏄🏿‍♂️🏄🏼‍♀️🌊🏝

Travel with and we will support your with and and discount on selected .

Surfing in Sri Lanka has two different seasons. That is because there are two separate wet seasons that dictate the weather (and swell/wind) patterns on the islands.

From October to April we have the north-eastern monsoon. That means it’s the best time to surf at the stunning beaches of the south-west coast. Offshore winds are more common and the swell form up to tidy sets for the reefs. This is by far the season with the widest variety of working Sri Lanka surf destinations. Places like Weligama, Hiriketiya, Mirissa, Kabalana/Ahangama and Midigama are the places to be. From our experience as a specialised travel agency, we can highly recommend The Green Rooms in Weligama!

On most of our round tours we visit the Dambulla Cave Temple. Have you seen these wonderful Caves yet? 🙏

Dambulla Cave Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1991) in Sri Lanka, situated in the central part of the country. Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of gods and goddesses. The latter include Vishnu and the Ganesha. The murals cover an area of 2,100 square metres. Depictions on the walls of the caves include the temptation by the demon Mara, and Buddha's first sermon.
Prehistoric Sri Lankans would have lived in these cave complexes before the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka as there are burial sites with human skeletons about 2700 years old in this area, at Ibbankatuwa near the Dambulla cave complexes.

Today 19 years ago, on 26 December 2004, Sri Lanka became a victim of the largest Indian Ocean Tsunami. It caused widespread destruction around the coasts of countries close to Indonesia, where the earthquake which triggered the tidal wave took place.

At 9:25 am on December 26, 2004 the wave hit the coast of Sri Lanka. It had travelled 1,700 kilometres.

In Sri Lanka, the civilian casualties were second only to those in Indonesia, with approximately 35,000 killed by the tsunami. The eastern shores were the hardest hit — the southwestern shores were hit later, but the death toll was as severe. A regular passenger train operating between Maradana and Matara was derailed and overturned by the tsunami and claimed at least 1,700 lives, becoming the largest single rail disaster death toll in local history.

Today marks the 19th anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami, and we remember, and pay respect to all those who lost their lives, and to the families they left behind. Lest we forget.

Visiting Galle should definitely be on your tour itinerary when you visit Sri Lanka.
The buildings inside Galle Fort in the south of Sri Lanka, will take your breath away. The fort is a monument, and within its walls, you can find some fascinating historic buildings, museums and beautiful churches. Don’t miss the clock tower that stands high above the fort, looking out to sea, as well as the lighthouse.
Galle has an incredible mix of culture and architecture that you could easily forget you are in Sri Lanka! There’s a uniquely European (and some say also Cuban) feel as you walk through Portuguese style streets with Dutch and English style buildings under SriLankan coconut trees.
