is a shallow water body in south-west Sri Lanka. Madu Ganga is one of the most important natural assets of Sri Lanka. It opens to the Indian Ocean Madu lagoon is a very wide and a beautiful lagoon in sri lanka. “Madu Ganga” is located 80 kilometres from Colombo in Balapitiya Main road. The estuary of the Madu Ganga river is a complex coastal ecosystem of mangroves and islands. It may be one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests in Sri Lanka. The water runs through a course of land that span of 2300 hectares that was declares as a national sanctuary in 2006.

Madu Ganga is the second largest wetland in the island, there are around 64 islands in the river and lagoon. Along with the smaller Randombe Lake, to which it is connected by two narrow channels, it forms the Madu Ganga wetland. Its estuary and the many mangrove islets on it form a complex coastal wetland ecosystem. It has a high value in ecological, biological and aesthetic significance, home to 303 species of plants belonging to 95 families and to 248 species of vertebrates.Maduwa island connected to the mainland with a very long footbridge

Kataragama Esala Perehera is the most spectacular event of the annual Esala festival, which is held in the nights of festive season. A procession (perehera) with traditional dancers, kawadi dancers, drummers, fire walkers, elephants and many other religious rituals, it is known as one of the most elegant historical cultural pageants in Sri Lanka.[18] The fire-walking ceremonies for which the Kataragama festival is famous, take place in the main temple yard after the procession. The area is prepared with wood being burned beforehand and the devotees who take part in fire-walking, after having cleansed themselves and visited the main temple (maha devale) for divine blessings, tread the red-hot embers floored on the ground to show their great reverence to the god.[6]

Raja Raja Chola I built Vanavan Mahadevisvaram, a Shiva temple at Polonnaruwa named after his queen, which presently is known as Siva Devale.[12] The temple among other contained Ganesha and Parvati statues of bronze.[7] north and central parts of Sri Lanka was under this period ruled under Rajendra Chola I directly as a Chola province. However, following the year 1070 AD ended the Chola rule in the island, and Polonnaruwa was captured by Vijayabahu I of Polonnaruwa also known as Vijayabahu the great.[13]

Starting from Mahanagakula on the south of the Walawe river, Vijayabahu dispatched three armies to attack Polonnaruwa from three fronts. One army was sent along the western shore of the country to the port of Mahathittha to deal with any reinforcements arriving from South India. Afterwards, part of this army moved towards Polonnaruwa and attacked from the northwest. A second army was sent from the east across Magama to attack Polonnaruwa from the east. The third and main force advanced across the country, led by the king. Surrounded by these three armies, Polonnaruwa was besieged for seven months before king Vijayabahu’s forces entered the city. In 1070, Vijayabahu became the ruler of Polonnaruwa.[14][15] At that time Sri Lanka was known as Thambapanni.

Trade and agriculture flourished under the patronage of the famous grandson of King Vijayabahu I of Polonnaruwa, king Prakramabahu the Great, who was so adamant that no drop of water falling from the heavens was to be wasted and each was to be used toward the development of the land.[citation needed] Hence, irrigation systems that are far superior to those of the Anuradhapura Age were constructed during Parakramabahu's reign – systems which to this day supply the water necessary for paddy cultivation during the scorching dry season in the east of the country. The greatest of these systems is the Parakrama Samudra or the Sea of Parakrama which was also used as a large sea-going ship anchorage via the Mahaweli River.[13] The Kingdom of Polonnaruwa was completely self-sufficient during King Parakramabahu's reign.

With the exception of his immediate successor, Nissankamalla I, the other monarchs of Polonnaruwa were not as strong-willed and were prone to picking fights within their own court.[citation needed] They also went on to form more matrimonial alliances with stronger South Indian kingdoms until these matrimonial links superseded the local royal lineage. This prompted an invasion by the Aryacakravarti dynasty warlord Kalinga Magha in 1214, which saw the complete destruction of the metropolises of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa by burning.

Goraka Ella Falls are situated in the Kegalle district. It is 60 meters in height and cascades over a number of rocky surfaces before falling down to the pool below. The pool is suitable for bathing even for the young.

Goraka Ella Falls are situated on the Talduwa – Meewitigammana Road, just about 600 km away from the main road. The water on this stream is made use for or cultivation and hydro-power upstream. This reduces the water levels quite significantly during dry season.

Getting to Goraka Ella Falls

From Colombo take the Colombo – Kandy Road and go past Kiribathgoda, Gampaha, Urapola up until you reach Amithirigala. Go down the Talduwa – Meewitigammana Road where you can find the Goraka Ella Falls.

The Loolkandura Estate, also known as Loolcondera Estate, is the first tea plantation estate in Sri Lanka and is situated in Rikillagaskada in the Central Province.

The Loolkandura Estate, also known as Loolcondera Estate, is the first tea plantation estate in Sri Lanka and is situated in Rikillagaskada in the Central Province. There are many attractions to visit in this estate especially in relation to the pioneer of Ceylon tea, James Taylor. These attractions include the following;

1. Ruins of James Taylor’s Cottage
2. Hike to Kondagala
3. James Taylor’s Well
4. James Taylor’s Seat
5. Field No 7 – The First tea field

Kondagala is a picturesque mountain located right behind James Taylor’s cottage at Loolkandura Estate. It is a popular hiking spot with a 300 meters hike to reach the top of the mountain. Hiking Kondagala exposes the hiker to beautiful views in the surrounding areas especially with mist laden across the valleys. One specialty of Kondagala is that the rock shows two completely different characteristics depending on the weather. On a sunny day the peak of the mountain is burning hot while on a rainy day you might experience an extremely cold weather with the mist laden around and covering the view from the top.

Kondagala is popular for providing 360 degrees view of the amazing valleys in the area. Be mindful when at the top because of the mist laden around which could make it hard even to see the person next to you making it easy to walk and fall off the edge of the cliff.

The Range lies in central , south-west of the city of Kandy. It was declared as an environmental protection area in February 2010 under the National Environment Act.[1] The maximum height of the range is 3800 ft. The mountain range consists of seven peaks. The highest one being the Uura Kanda.[2] The range is a favourite destination among the mountain hikers in Sri Lanka. University of Peradeniya is situated adjacent to the Hanthana mountain range.[3]

# (Sinhala: #නාවලපිටිය #, Tamil: நாவலபிட்டி) is a town in Central Province, #. The town is located in the , and is governed by an Urban Council. It is 38 km (24 mi) away from Kandy and 112 km (70 mi) from Colombo, at a height of 589 m (1,932 ft) above sea level.

The area was developed during the colonisation of the island by the British, as one of the colony's centres of coffee production.[1] In 1874 the railway line was extended from Kandy to Nawalapitiya, with the Nawalapitiya railway station opening on 21 December.[2][3] The station serves as a terminus for a number of commuter trains, with all local trains stopping at the station. The station comprises three platforms and two siding loops. In 1885 the railway was extended to Nanu Oya.[4]

The Nawalapitiya Division was established in 1876 and in 1878 a town council was established.
