A local TV channel, Hiru CIA, has exposed a racket involving the exploitation of tourists at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The orphanage, a popular tourist destination known for its herds of elephants, has been the scene of illegal activities where elephant keepers were charging tourists for close-up photos with the elephants. These keepers were reportedly earning between 35,000 and 40,000 rupees per day through this illicit practice.

The Hiru CIA report also revealed that tourists were being extorted for money after offering food to the elephants. This exposé has brought to light the unethical practices that have been tarnishing the reputation of Sri Lanka's tourism industry. Hiru CIA has called for authorities to intervene and put a stop to these exploitative practices.

It is important to note that these illegal activities are not representative of the entire tourism industry in Sri Lanka. The vast majority of tourism businesses operate ethically and provide visitors with a positive and enriching experience. However, the actions of a few bad actors can damage the reputation of an entire industry. It is therefore crucial that authorities take swift action to address this issue and ensure that tourists are protected from exploitation.

Geoffrey Bawa was a Sri Lankan architect who is widely regarded as one of the most important architects in South Asia in the 20th century. He was born in 1919 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and studied law in London before returning to Sri Lanka to pursue a career in architecture.

Bawa's architectural style is characterized by a fusion of traditional Sri Lankan design elements with modernist principles, creating a unique and distinctive aesthetic. His buildings often incorporate courtyards, verandas, and other outdoor spaces, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside.

Some of Bawa's most famous works include the Lunuganga Estate, his country home outside of Colombo that he transformed from a neglected rubber plantation into a stunning landscaped garden and architectural masterpiece; the Kandalama Hotel in Dambulla, which is built into the side of a rock face and designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding jungle; and the Parliament complex in Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, which features a series of interconnected buildings and open spaces that reflect Sri Lankan cultural and architectural traditions.

Bawa's legacy extends far beyond Sri Lanka, as his influence can be seen in the work of architects throughout the region and beyond. He passed away in 2003, but his work continues to inspire and influence architects around the world.

Munneswaram Kovil is a Hindu temple located in the town of Munneswaram, Chilaw in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. It is one of the five ancient Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva on the island, and is believed to have been established in the 10th century.

The temple is known for its intricate architecture and elaborate rituals, and is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus from Sri Lanka and abroad. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva in the form of Ishwara, and there are also shrines dedicated to other deities such as Vishnu and Ganesha.

According to legend, the temple was built on the site where King Rama, the hero of the Indian epic Ramayana, prayed to Lord Shiva after defeating the king Ravana. The temple is also said to have been a center of learning and scholarship in ancient times.

Stilt fishing is a traditional fishing technique that is practiced in some parts of Sri Lanka, particularly along the southern coast. The technique involves fishermen sitting on a tall, narrow wooden pole known as a stilt, which is planted into the seabed several meters offshore. The fishermen balance themselves on the stilt and use a fishing rod and line to catch small fish such as sardines and mullet.

Stilt fishing is believed to have originated in the 1940s during World War II, when food shortages led Sri Lankan fishermen to experiment with new fishing methods. Today, stilt fishing has become a popular tourist attraction, with fishermen often posing for photos in exchange for a small fee.

However, it is important to note that stilt fishing has declined in recent years due to overfishing and the impact of the 2004 tsunami, which destroyed many of the stilts and fishing platforms along the coast.
