The First Tea Auction in Sri Lanka

The first public Colombo Tea Auction was held at the premises of Somerville & Co. under the auspice of Ceylon Chamber of Commerce on 30th July 1883. Its growth has been unique and today, Colombo is considered the largest auction centre in the world handling on an average, about 5.5 million kilos each week. It has become the cross-road of the journey of tea from producer to consumer.
