ITC Limited’s wholly owned subsidiary WelcomHotels Lanka (Private) Limited has invested USD 500 million to launch the 352-room hotel, ITC Ratnadipa in Colombo adding a major landmark to the local tourism and hospitality landscape.
Chairman and Managing Director, ITC Ltd, India, Sanjiv Puri, said that they invested in this hotel at a time when Sri Lanka’s tourism sector was ailing but they had confidence in the destination Sri Lanka as they saw future potential.
“Sri Lanka has amazing tourism potential which is yet to be exploited and India tourism is growing leaps and bounds and they are looking for destinations and Sri Lanka fits their taste.”
He also said that youth too want to travel and through several road shows that they hope to conduct in India and globally to promote ITC Ratnadipa will not only bring Indians to their hotel but to the entire country. He also said they were very pleased with the manner in which Sri Lanka rose from an economic crisis and thanked the country’s present leadership for the positive initiatives taken in this regard. He said that Colombo was their first and biggest investment into leisure. “ITC is one of India’s foremost multi-business conglomerates with businesses in consumer goods, hotels, paperboards and packaging, agri business and information technology and in Nepal we first invested in our other business and then moved into leisure.”
“However in Sri Lanka we next hope to look at investing from some of our other diversified verticals.”
It was also disclosed that the land was given on a 99 year lease. He also said that still India and Sri Lanka’s construction costs are much lower than in other countries. This landmark complex is situated along the shores of the Indian Ocean on one side and Beira Lake on the other and one cannot get a super location like this.”
The two towers of the property which house the hotel and other luxurious Sapphire Residences are connected by a sky bridge ‘Ahasa’ which is an architectural marvel and the first of its kind in South Asia.
ITC is a global exemplar in sustainability, and it is a matter of immense pride that the first 12 properties in the world to be LEED Zero Carbon and the first 4 to be LEED Zero Water certified are all ITC Hotels. “These too would be highly competitive tools to market our brand.”

Aberdeen Falls is a 98 m high waterfall on the Kehelgamu Oya near Ginigathena, in the Nuwara Eliya District of Sri Lanka. Aberdeen is named after Aberdeen, the third largest city in Scotland and the capital of Aberdeenshire. Kehelgamu Oya is a major tributary of the Kelani River.
This is the only waterfall in Sri Lanka that can be viewed from the inside due to the beautifully formed rock formations at the foot of the Aberdeen Waterfall which are of almost unique beauty.

Gartmore Falls is situated in the Maskeliya town of Nuwara Eliya. It is 25 meters in height and is also known as “Sri Pada Falls” or “Adam’s Peak Falls” since it is located close to the Sri Pada Holy Mountain. Gartmore waterfall, located inside the Gartmore Estate, falls on to the Maskeliya Reservoir. It is fed by two streams which join above the Gartmore falls. Each of these streams creates a waterfall before joining and lies inside the Gartmore Estate. These two waterfalls named Upper Gartmore Falls and Lower Gartmore Falls, in combination are called Gartmore Estate Waterfalls or Gartmore Falls.

Jaffna Fort Historical Facts
Jaffna Fort is located in the Jaffna peninsula of Sri Lanka. It was built in 1618, under Philip De Olivera following the Portuguese invasion of Jaffna. A Colonial-era fort, it was built with the prime objective to consolidate the Portuguese stronghold in Sri Lanka.
The Portuguese ruled Jaffna till 1658 after which it was captured by the Dutch. Under the leadership of Raiclop Van Goins, various expansion activities were carried out at the Fort, consequently making it the second largest Dutch fortress in Sri Lanka.
After a century and a half of dominance over Northern Sri Lanka, the Dutch finally ceded control to the British in the year 1795.
Most of the fort today lies in ruins due to the decades of armed conflict and onslaught that has plagued the region. A map would show the Jaffna Fort as a polygonal walled structure, though in reality most of its walls are hidden beneath overgrown slopes. Outside the moat in the outer ramparts is a series of five tunnels, each under twin formation. The tunnels are well preserved, but seem to be void of doors. However, there are signs that they might have had doorways in the past.
Most of the monuments within the fort have been destroyed. Of these, the monument named the Queen’s House is under sufficient level of preservation and can be easily identified. Though the upward extension of its framework is completely destroyed, most of the walls still remain. A short parapet built in Dutch style architecture seems to have been spared the destruction and still stands in front of this building. The fort also had a Church located within its compounds which was subsequently bombed and leveled. Since its presence was documented, its layout can be identified. The Church had broad walls and was constructed primarily in limestone. The fort also had a prison, a hospital and other ancillary buildings.

Lakegala mountain is situated in Sri Lanka about 175 kilometres away from the capital Colombo. This mountain is situated in Meemure village. Lakegala is situated near the Border between Kandy and Matale Districts. There are several access points to Lakegala rock but the safest access road is from Meemure Village.
