The places you must visit when travelling in cold Nuwara Eliya 🙈🌷🦋❄️ (full details below)
Nuwara Eliya is known as the City of Light, a City on the plain, of Little England, located at an altitude of 6128 feet and 1868 meters above sea level, which was a settlement during the reign of King Ravana and is believed to have been discovered by Samuel Baker in 1846. Nuwara Eliya is the only city in Sri Lanka that has a flower garden next to a town (Victoria Garden is next to the bus stand) and a protected forest.
Bombura Falls,
You have to go by car and walk for a distance of 2 km. Very beautiful place. As you know, camping is not allowed now. When it rains, you have to be careful because the water is very high. From Nuwara Eliya, pass Hakgala Malwatta on Welimada Road, turn left at Boragas and go on Rendapola Road. This is a carpeted road, and even a big bus can go there. There is also a bus called Bomburu Ella. It is 18 kilometers from Nuwara Eliya. It is not recommended to take small children.
Shantipura (the highest village in Sri Lanka, there is a view point here.) You need to buy a ticket, it is about 5 km from Nuwara Eliya. You can go by bus, car, van or any small bus.
Galvezland (This is a small place near the town, if you go early in the morning, you can see the birds like that. Especially the dark blue magpies can be seen there. The distance is 2.3 km when you go round. You need to buy a ticket for 48 rupees.(it may vary) If you love the environment, you must go. There is no polythene garbage. See the beauty of a forest. This is an old forest that has not been cut down even in the time of Sudda. But in Nuwara Eliya, it is very dark during the sunny days and during the rainy season, so do not take children with you on those days because it is too dark, this is a safe place. No, you can go by any vehicle.
Holy Trinity Church This is one of the oldest churches that was built in 1852. It has a very old piano, and there is a cemetery that dates back to when the whites lived.
Nuwara Eliya is the old railway station. Now, this is the bus depot. The old buildings are still there. Even the old platform is still there.
Single tree hills Here Swarnagiri Chetiya temple is on the top of the hill, the town is nearby, a very beautiful place, you can even see Samanala hill. Any vehicle can go near the temple, except for big buses, if it is a 4w vehicle, you can go further up to near the tower.
There are some hotels above Sky Gardens and Nuwara Eliya. You have to go on the unique view road, you can just go up and come back, big vehicles can't go.
Piduruthalagala is the highest mountain
It is about 8280 feet high. Since 2012, only cars, vans, and jeeps are allowed, and small buses are not allowed, and there is a climb of about 2100 feet for 6 km, so only go if the vehicle is suitable. Sometimes, if there is no signal, you will be in the biggest trouble, 230 rupees will be charged only for the vehicle. About 15 vehicles are sent to the top at a time. Make sure to take your ID. If you go during the rainy season, you can see many breathtaking waterfalls. You cannot miss it because it is a very secure area. There is a small temple on the top. The place itself is the highest place a man can reach in Sri Lanka, and this place is the starting point of all the four parts of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya, Gampola, Haguranketha and Badulla, among the 52 map parts of Sri Lanka. There are eight towers here: Air Force Radar, Communication Tower, AirLanka Radar, Army Navy Radar and Communication Towers, Rapavahini Tower, CSN Tower (currently inactive) along with the tri-force. Wild boars can be seen at large, Samanala Kanda, Kirigalpotta. Ferries, Kikiliyamana, Hakgala, Namunukula, Nuwaraeliya below with Kaduweti and Ambewela Farm, wind farms, Pattipola, Hotanthanne Nagma Hariya, Kadapola side, Haputale, Bandarawela upper side, Mandaramnuwara upper side, Randenigala, Pussellava side, Kothmale side, Pudaluoya side, if it's not foggy, check if it's foggy before going to the town, you must not bring alcohol and drugs, you'll get into trouble at best, you can smoke ci******es, it's completely forbidden to take photos of the tower and the towers.
Dunsinane Falls, Dunsinane Falls
This waterfall is because of the difficulty of the road. As far as I know, Dunsinan Falls is a place where you can see an extremely charming waterfall from the side of the road.
From Nuwara Eliya, if you turn from the Pudaluoya Junction on the Nuwara Eliya Road and go on the Pudaluoya Road, there is this waterfall located in Dunsinan Estate. It is 20 km from Nuwara Eliya, but it takes almost an hour to go this distance because the road is difficult, but any vehicle can travel. Until you reach the waterfall, you can see the Kikiliyamana reserve forest on one side and the Ramboda mountain range on the other side. There is a kovil near the waterfall, you can go through it and go to the foot of the waterfall, you can stay long enough in this part where the water is knee-deep, even small children can be taken without fear, but if you don't have the opportunity to bathe here, you can bathe in the lower part if you want. That is also the reason why this waterfall remains clean. There is not even a shop nearby. There are no toilet facilities. If the road is difficult, you can come from Nuwara Eliya to Tavalamthane and turn around from there and come to this waterfall via Kothmale on the Talawakele road. Then there are about 40 km. Do not look far to visit this waterfall, it is so beautiful. The best thing is to plan to visit this on the day you go to Colombo from Nuwara Eliya, then if you are going to the city side, you can go to Tavalamthane, or you can go to Hatton Road via Pudaluoya via Talawakele or Nawalapitiya via Kothmale.
Nanu Oya Falls
From Nuwara Eliya, after passing Nanu Oya, you can turn right at the beginning of Radella Shortcut Road and come to this small but beautiful waterfall located in Glassaugh Estate. If the water in Nanu Oye is low during the flow, this waterfall is only a small stream. A place where you can have fun without any danger, the water of this beautiful waterfall is not suitable for drinking while standing. In any case, this place is not to be messed with.
Aadishakti Seeta Amman Temple or Seethakovila.
Nuwara Eliya is on the side of the road after about 8 km on Badulla Road. Everyone knows this Rama Ravana Sita story, as far as I know, the temple built to worship Goddess Sita (correct me if wrong) has a huge footprint here which is believed to be Hanumantha's. As it is a sacred place for Hindus, it is often crowded with Indians. There is a good toilet system.
Pattipola Railway Station.
This is the highest station in Sri Lanka, on the way to Hortonthan. Go ahead and take some photos. The highest point on the railway line is a short distance from Pattipola towards Ohia, if you have been there, take a short walk.
Rail journey. Railway hike
Although this is a new thing for us, if a group of boys go, it will be a strange experience. It is about 6 km from Pattipola Ohiya. Travelling between these two stations is a very fascinating experience. Because this road is in the middle of the forest, it is definitely good light, water, and light food, from sudden rain. Be prepared to go with things that can be saved.
Another important thing is the timings of the train between these two stations. Trains run from Pattipola between 10-11 in the morning, 1-2 in the afternoon and 4 to 5 in the afternoon, so you should be very careful about that. On this journey, you will meet No. 18 Bing, which is a very dark and scary Bing with 300 meters long winding. In addition, you will find No. 19, No. 20, and No. 21 Bing, which is about 250 feet long. In addition to this, the highest point of the station is found in the section. A great experience with a little planning.
Ferry Hill,
In the park on the way to Hortanthan, the third highest mountain in Sri Lanka (2350m), there is a bod next to the road to show the way, you have to go through the middle of the hill when you reach the top, you can see Ambewela, Pattipola, Pidurutalagala Welimada Plateau etc. It is not recommended to take small children. If it's a set of boys, then definitely go.
Old Fine Hotel
This is on the right-hand side of the entrance to Hortontown from the parking lot. Many people don't visit this place, but it is a place where you can learn a lot about Horton. In the 80s, this was a famous tourist hotel, the old hotels have now been converted into a museum. Even the very old walls of the old hotel have been preserved. Other animals including a tiger and an elephant head have been preserved. My grandfather worked in this hotel for many years, he said it was a favourite tourist destination in the seventies and eighties. A must-see place for young children.
Horton Place or Mah Eliya,
There is 10 km in this precious park called Gavarathenna. Here you can see a charming environment that is not found anywhere else in Sri Lanka including Kudalokantaya, Mahalokantaya, Backus Falls and small reservoirs. The important thing is if you are going to visit Horton Place, don't go suddenly, use a whole day for it. Most of the time after 10 am, Mahalokantaya is covered with fog, if the weather is clear, you can see an icy scene up to Belihuloy in Sabaragamuwa. Important thing: The road from Mahalokantha to Backus falls and coming out of the plain is difficult, so take a rest and walk. The other thing is that if you have small children during the rainy season, don't go there because all the roads we walk on become small waterways in the rain. Do not bring alcohol and ma*****na into the park, they will be checked, (if you want to buy a drink, drink right at Mahaeliya, but don't drink with bottles in front of the public.) When coming from the usual Ambewela road, go to Ohia and come to Boralanda (you can also go to Haputale from here) and come to Nuwara Eliya via Cappetipola. If going by train, it is 14 km from Pattipola to the entrance and 14 km from Ohia. There are 13. This journey on foot is not tiring at all. The only thing is to take what you need to survive when it rains, an umbrella is a place where you can't get high. Take water with you, there are taps on the way
Bakes Falls
This waterfall is three kilometers away from the main entrance of Hotanthanna and seven kilometers away from Lokantha. It was discovered by the British Samuel Bakers around the year 1845 and named after him. This breathtaking waterfall has been created by draining Belihul Oya, a main tributary of Walawe River, about twenty meters. The road up to this point is not well made so care should be taken when taking small children. Especially if you are traveling during the rainy season, you should come prepared for it. Be careful because the lesson this time is small. The water here is very cold so you have to be careful and come to Horton before 3 pm if you want to catch a good catch.
Sadathana
It is a short distance from the lake and can only be entered in a safari jeep. They charge about 2000 rupees, there is a view point. You can see many mountain ranges. This is the seed potato farm. However, its facilities are not enough.
Pedro Tea Factory This tea factory is located in a beautiful area. From Nuwara Eliya, take the Udupusellawa Road and turn at Boralanda Junction.
Punchikele Church St. Paul the Hermit Church,
A very magical place. Definitely go and see, whatever religion you follow, make a wish and it will definitely come true. It is on the side of Udupussellawa road, about 4 km from Nuwara Eliya.
Lovers leap waterfall,
You can go to Boralanda on Udupussellawa Road. It is difficult in cars and vans. You can do it by bike, or buy a wheel from there, buy 800, 1000, you can go to Laidmaclam road and have a look but it is difficult to go up.
The ice rink (you can swim) on Lady Maklam Road is at its coldest, a busy place, if you want to take a cold bath in Nuwara Eliya, this is the place.
You can bathe in Kandeela, you can't use soap. If you want, there are facilities where you can take a drink while going on the boat in the lake to cool down. Otherwise, go here after eating some noodles and drinking a plain tea. There is a famous place on the way to Hortonthan.
You have to turn around from New Zealand Farm, Ambewela town, you have to buy a ticket of 100 rupees, even a big bus can go. You must see the 8 feet high precious bulls, you can see how cheese is made, there are lots of rabbits to see, there is a restaurant inside, (false numbers though) there are good toilets. Animals are not allowed to be seen being milked when they are sick.
Highland Milk Powder Factory can be seen on the way to Horton. Entry is prohibited. Entry is possible with special permission.
"Eramadukele Falls", you want to go after passing Ragala and after going 4 km on the night road from Amst Junction, you have to get down from where you can see the falls, any vehicle can come till there. When you come here, in addition to Eramadukele Falls, you can see Ermadukele Podi Falls, Udupussellawa Falls and Kotabe Uda Falls. During the rainy season, the water in the waterfall is low. You can come and go on the bike trip and see the beauty of Sri Lanka. There are other names for these alleys, I said from the names on this side.
You can visit the strawberry fields in Meepilimana and bring home-made jam. Horton is on the road. You can visit a strawberry farm by riding the tractor and showing it to the children.
Mahakudugala (Ravan Rajatuma Sambanda Kanda) is when you turn from Brookside and go to High Forest.
Even Knuckles can be seen on this side of High Forest. Hulang Kapollak road is carpeted so any vehicle can pass.
You can swim in Ramboda Falls, it is a short distance from the roadside when coming from the city. There are places where you can wash and eat. During the rainy season, there is completely dirty water. The freedom of Wen Alli is not here because of the crowd.
There are many places to bathe in Kothmala, it is safe to bathe under the bridge, people from this side call the water golden water, go and see if it is true.
If you are coming to Hatton Road, go to visit the Melsna Tea Castle, there is a viewpoint, you can buy unblended tea in the tea estates here, and the food prices are more similar here. But it is a good place for small children.
Maxwoods Tea House. Now, this has been bought by the Damro company. On the side of the road when coming from the city.
If you are coming to Nuwara Eliya via the Bandarawela Welimada, pass the Welimada and then pass the Cappetipola town, don't forget to drink full plenty of hot roti with mushrooms at the Balungala roti shop.
There is Victoria Park, Gregory Lake, Hakgala Park and the post office that everyone knows.
When you come to Nuwara Eliya, don't stay in the hotel, walk around the town, you won't sweat even if you walk around, if you go to banks like HNB BOC, see how beautiful the flowers are.
Go to the market and buy yams and ragala bonchi from Nuwara Eliya and local vegetables, but the prices are high.
Come to Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka to see the beauty and take a train from Nanuoy to Haputale.
There are many places like that. If you want to see more beautiful places, when coming from the city side, come from Padiyapalella road instead of going through Gampola. The biggest climb on the road is on that road, coming through Highforest Brookside, there are some very beautiful places.
Let me tell you about the climate.
The old people of Nuwara Eliya say that in 1984 and 1998, there was freezing temperature in Nuwara Eliya in January. In 1984 there were places with temperatures as low as minus 2 Celsius and in 1998 zero Celsius. In 2011 too, there was a bitter cold that dropped to 1 Celsius. According to Wikipedia, the lowest temperature in Nuwara Eliya in the last century is minus 2.6.
March-April - The hottest time is 24 C in Nuwara Eliya and sometimes it can rain during the day and in the evening for about two hours, around 15 C at night.
May, June, July - This is the windy season in Nuwara Eliya, it rains all the time, sometimes it rains for three days without rain, and the temperature is between 18-10 C. Sometimes it gets very cold. This year 2018, the cold was so much that the heaters were put on. The temperature dropped to 7c,

The way of equality in Nuwara Eliya may change from time to time, and it also changes according to the side of Nuwara Eliya. Toppas, Magasthota and Kalukele are the most foggy areas in Nuwara Eliya. Hawaeliya is the least foggy.
There are other unknown places that cannot be reached easily.
