Japan Jabara (Japanese drowner)

Water hyacinth is a free-floating perennial aquatic plant (or hydrophyte) native to tropical and sub-tropical South America. Its origins in Sri Lanka are not certain however this plant received its Sinhalese name Japan Jabara (Japanese Drowner) as they were introduced into a number of Lakes & reservoirs during World War 2 with the intent of drowing Japanese fighter planes by disguising the Waterbodies as plains suitable for landing.

Today this invasive plant covers many of Sri Lanka’s water bodies adding to its beauty whilst affecting the flow of water & nutrients to aquatic life. Despite posing a threat to fresh water marine life. the Locals have found a number of uses for it ranging from bio gas, animal food, medicinal remedies and raw material for some industries.

Fishing boats docked on Pesalai beach on Mannar Island. The unbearable heat makes it impossible for the locals to do anything during the day. hence the head out to see at night and return in the early hours of the morning with their catch for the day. The Karuwalagaswewa Reservoir - Puttalam

Ancient Sri Lanka is known for engineering marvels when it came to Irrigation. Dating as far back to the 1st Century BC. Sri Lankan Kings Built a Number of Reservoirs which were engineering marvels which was crucial for the Paddy cultivation of the time.

The ingenuity of the Sri Lankan irrigation engineers is best exemplified by the invention of a sluice called “biso kotuwa”. The “biso kotuwa” is the equivalent of the valve-pit, which functions in the regulation of the outward flow of water and is therefore essentially an invention made by the Sri Lankan irrigation engineers more than 2200 years ago. It has remained essentially unchanged since then. It was this invention alone which permitted the Sinhalese to proceed boldly with the construction of reservoirs that still rank among the finest in the world

Today Sri Lanka has over 59 Giant Tanks spread out 13 districts the dry zone irrigating the Paddy Cultivation The Karuwalagaswewa Reservoir is one such hidden reservoir which can be found on the Puttalam - Anuradhapura Road.
