Aukana Buddha
About 30 miles (50km) south of mihintale is the Aukana Buddha one of the most beautiful perfectly preserved ancient Buddha images on the island. This 5th century statue, attributed to king Dhatusena is carved out of solid rock and measures 42ft (13 m) in height.
Aukana means "sun-eatig" and the image is best viewed as the sun rises.

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage
It was established 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife department. This 24 acres large elephant Orphanage is a also breeding pace for elephants and it has the greatest herd of elephants in captivity in the World.
The Orphanage is very popular among local and foreign tourist.The main attraction is the opportunity to observe the bathing elephants from the river bank as the herd interact socially, bathing and playing.

It is widely believed that Galle may have been the city of Tarshish of Bibilical time, the great emporium of the East, trading with Chinese,Persians, Indian and Arab traders and where king Soloman sent merchant vessels to buy gold, silver, gems, ivory, and spices.
Aportuguese fleet first landedin Galle in 1505 after taking shelter in the harbour where their ship was blown off course.Gradually, they developed trading links with the island.In 1589 they built a small fort in Galle to guard the harbour and named it Santa Cruz.
The Dutch arrived in1640 and, after a fierce battle, destroyed almost all of the Portuguese presence.In1663 the Dutch built the magnificent fort, with great ramparts and massive bastions, that still stands today and dominates the town.
In 1796 the fort was handed over to the British.
Gallery was a major port in Sri Lanka until around 1875, when maritime trade was diverted to Colombo.This well-preserved fort remains a"living" monument with a thriving community within and is one of the eight UNESCO World Heritage sites found in Sri Lanka.

The island's economy under Dutch rule had been dominated by the spice trade.when the British took control at the end of the 18th century,they proved very successful and ceylon became a major supplier of raw materials and commodities to the vast imperial market.During thecoffee boom,and just two year before the coffee leaf disease,the Scottish coffee planter,James Taylor first commercially planted tea in 1867.Taylor was the innovative superintendent of Loolecondera Estate,where he cleared 20 acres of land on a hill slope and planted tea seeds in Field no7.The tea plant was growing well in the ideal climate of the hills of Ceylon.within the first years Taylor was not only able to grow tea on a commercial scale,but also mastered processing it.in1872 the first shipment of tea to England was recorded.Today,sri lanka is one of the World's leading producers of tea.Although tea originated in china over5000 year ago,it was ceylon that made tea famous in the 19th and 20th centuries,as ceylon tea was being used by almost every major tea brand.ceylon tea is prized for its unparalleled quality anda variety unmatched.
