A Haven for Wild Elephants

Kaudulla National Park, located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, is a prime destination for witnessing wild elephants in their natural habitat. This lush sanctuary, centered around the Kaudulla Reservoir, offers a year-round haven for elephants, with peak sightings from August to December. During this period, herds of elephants, sometimes numbering over 200, gather near the water’s edge to graze, socialize, and bathe, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for visitors. A jeep safari through the park allows an up-close view of these majestic creatures, along with a chance to spot other wildlife like deer, peacocks, and even leopards.

Sri Lanka, often referred to as the “Land of Elephants,” is one of the best places in the world for elephant safaris. The Lesser Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna javanica) is a common and widespread species found in South and Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka, these ducks are known to inhabit wetlands, including lakes, reservoirs, and marshes. They are typically seen in small flocks and are recognized by their distinctive whistling calls and their preference for shallow, vegetated water bodies.

These ducks are quite adaptable and can often be seen in a variety of freshwater habitats, especially in protected areas and national parks where there is abundant vegetation. They are not considered to be at significant risk in Sri Lanka, but like many waterfowl, their populations can be affected by habitat loss and changes in water quality.
