(12)

Completed in 2008, Jungle Tide was built to reflect the best of traditional Ceylon planters’ bungalows but with up to date facilities. It stands within a tea estate on a hillside about half an hour by vehicle from the centre of Kandy, a World Heritage City. Set in three acres of tropical gardens with a stream and swimming pool, the house commands wonderful views towards the Knuckles Range of mountains, with the mighty rock of Oorogala (“Pig Rock”) forming a backdrop on the opposite side.

Another great post from East'n'West, highlighting the great bits of Sri Lanka that few tourists see.

Relaxed buffaloes taking a mud bath amongst lotus flowers, shy crocodiles interrupting their sunbathing when noticing we paparazzies are coming, birds chirping around, Brahminy kites majestically flying over the scene, while herds of swift goats and skinny cows try to find a meagre meal.
At a distance it stands, high and mighty. Kudumbimalai Rock, as it is called by the Tamil villagers around, or Thoppigala, as Sinhalese soldiers name it. Forces fought here. The Tamil Tigers used to camp on the top, from where they could observe the troops’ movements all around.

The recapture of the rock by the Sri Lankan forces in 2007 signed the end of the armed struggle in the East of Sri Lanka, 2 years before the decades-long conflict was finally won in the North by the governmental forces in May 2009. So here is a rock that has witnessed battles, heard shelling, seen youngsters in military attire fight for its control. After being the stronghold of LTTE for years, the Sri Lankan army now well guarded the rock, with military brigades around reminding us of the recent history of this disputed land.

After a quick visit to the military museum, Suranga, our army guide, accompanies us to the top of the rock, going up cement stairs, swinging between rocks, climbing the final ladder. It is only when reaching the top, and enjoying a 360 degrees bird eye view, that we can finally fully grasp the strategic importance of the rock, while marvelling at the view of the now peaceful green surroundings, till the horizon.

More on the Pekoe Trail from our friend Juliet Coombe. We are now working with one of the guides and naturalists, Sanath Herath, to offer natre and walking experiences in Hanthana. www.jungletide.com

The Pekoe Trail is an exciting new 20 to 25-day, 300 km network of trails starting in Kandy, that has already been credited as one of the five most incredible walks in the world by the Financial Times in London. Funded by the European Union and USAID, this epic socially sustainable hike has been des...

Our friend Kenny, a Sri Lankan whose first language is English and who therefore totally gets this blog, occasionally sends us snippets which have made their way into his phone. Kandy is pretty much a cultural desert, beyond the traditional Buddhist cultural stuff aimed largely at the foreign tourist trade, of which currently there is very little. There is no regular English language cinema or theatre, no music venue, no proper art gallery and the bookshops are heavily biased towards educational texts rather than literature. One small beacon of light in the darkness is the Atelier Hotel, located well out of town up a side street opposite the Arpico supermarket....
