Lord Buddha visited Sri Lanka 3 times, records the History books.
First to Mahiyangana, then to Nagadeepa, the third and last time to Kelaniya.
When Lord Buddha visited Nagadeepa (2nd visit to Sri Lanka), to settle the dispute between the two brothers Chulodara and Mahodara, their uncle Naga King Maniakkhika invited Lord Buddha to his kingdom - the Kelaniya. On the 08th year of Lord Buddha’s enlightenment, together with 500 Arhants, Lord Buddha visited Kelaniya.
For Lord Buddha to sit, the Naga King made a Gem-Studded seat. There was celebrations, sermons - after all, this was the Buddha in Kelaniya.
To remember this holy event, for the people to worship Lord Buddha for the years to come, it’s said that the Naga King Maniakkhika placed the Gem-Studded Seat, some relics, at the exact location where Lord Buddha sat and built a Cetiya.
Would you believe that exact location still has a Cetiya?
Even after the invasions, multiple attacks from foreign nations and rebuilds, the Cetiya is still being worshipped by over a million of pilgrims who visit the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya.

Instead of watching elephants on a safari jeep in Sri Lanka, what if you could see them swimming across a large body of water - a tank, swimming from island to island? This mysterious phenomenon can be seen at the Gal Oya National Park in Sri Lanka. The Senanayake Samudraya, Sri Lanka’s largest man-made tank is the home for this beautiful sight.
The elephants in Gal Oya National Park have evolved and adapted to their aqueous habitat, making them fantastic swimmers. If you’re lucky, you’ll see them swimming from island to island – moving with as much grace as any water-dwelling creature.
Statue of Self-Mortification - Maha Abhinishkramanaya Pilimaya

But, a rare statue is the Dushkara Kriya Statue. Also known as the Maha Abhinishkramanaya Pilimaya.
Or, in English, the Statue of Self-Mortification.
If you follow the Lord Buddha’s story, when the Prince Siddhartha Gautama was trying to attain the Buddhahood, he took different paths. One was going through extreme levels of torture, pain, and suffering. This act called Self-Mortification is depicted in this statue at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya.

Sivurugala Viharaya - the place where Lord Buddha bathed in Sri Lanka
In 528 BCE, when Lord Buddha visited Kelaniya, he and the Arhants bathed in the Kelani River (Kalyani Nadi). The rock where Lord Buddha placed his robes and the exact spot where he bathed are now revered by pilgrims as one of the most significant locations associated with the Buddha.

Bringing you another custom you can notice in Sri Lanka; Smashing Coconuts!
Across the island, there are some famous locations where usually there is a Devalaya, where people come to Smash Coconuts. Sounds fun right?
But, if you get to know the real reason why people do this, it's not as fun as you think.
Coconuts are Smashed for mainly two reasons.
The Positive or the most widely said reason is to Make a Good Wish. Like, concrete that intention. To show the sheer will or the power of that Good Deed. For example, to be successful in a business, to ask for the gods blessings to go through a challenge, to show how much you are willing to go through for a wish; devotees smash a Coconut.
On the other hand, when some wishes Ill, or has a Bad Deed against someone, they Smash a coconut. A quarrel with a neighbor, wants someone go into a bad state, even to wish someone death, believers Smash Coconuts.
Some of the famous Coconut Smash locations among the believers are:
- Seenigama Devalaya
- Kataragama Devalaya
- Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya's Devalaya
Without a doubt the second reason to why people Smash Coconuts against someone is controversial to the religions because all religions teach Peace and Forgiveness, but, Traditions and Cultures that are centuries-old are always practiced and believed by people irrespective of logical or practical thinking.
Like we always say, Sri Lanka is a country where you see Thousands of Years forming a culture, traditions, practices.

Ever wondered why everyone takes their shoes off before entering temples in Sri Lanka?
It's simply a sign of respect. In Buddhist and Hindu temples, it is mandatory to remove footwear such as slippers, shoes, and sandals. When visiting any temple in Sri Lanka, make sure to remove any type of footwear.
Socks are allowed, but they are often impractical because many temples have sandy grounds and large garden areas.
Removing footwear as a sign of respect is common in Sri Lanka, much like wearing white clothing when visiting temples.

The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara boasts a remarkable history, possibly stretching back before 500 BCE. Legend tells of the Buddha's third visit to Sri Lanka upon the invitation of the Naga King Maniakkhika.
Within the temple grounds lies the Dathu Mandira, meaning "House of Relics." While the current building is modern, it's believed that even King Maniakkhika had a dedicated space to venerate Buddha relics. The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is said to enshrine the Lord Buddha's hair relics within a golden casket.

This adorable sloth bear cub is learning the ropes (or should we say branches?) on how to climb trees at the Yala National Park in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan sloth bears have long curved claws for digging termites - not the best for tree climbing. But from their younger days onwards, their love for honey, natural curiosity always gets them doing the opposite. Credits to original uploader

Making Coconut Oil with Traditions from Sri Lanka
Coconuts and Sri Lanka go hand in hand. This video from Traditional Me shows how the Sri Lankans made Coconut Oil before the introduction of automated machinery.
The coconut tree is a tree that is not only widespread in our island nation but something that is intricately woven within our culture & cuisine. The Sri Lankans of old called it 'Kapruka', which is a tree of legend that is said to give you whatever you wish. The coconut tree is given such a high honor because each part of the coconut tree can be used for something or another, making the tree one of the most useful trees to grow.

Ceylon African Manja / Something new from Sri Lanka
Enjoy this vibrant energy of Ceylon African Manja!
This unique performance blends African heritage with Sri Lankan spirit. The performers are part of Sri Lanka's Afro-Sri Lankan community, descendants of Africans brought to the island centuries ago. They say the Portuguese brought them down during their Colony in Sri Lanka, and their origin is supposed to be Mozambique. Even still, they carry their original religion of Roman Catholicism, which was brought down from Africa at the time.
Manja's infectious rhythms, playful lyrics, and expressive dance moves are a powerful celebration of their cultural identity. I captured this amazing performance in Puttalam, the heart of Sri Lanka's Afro-Sri Lankan community. The whole experience is fun for the entire 30 minutes and finishes with a small treat of Belimal drink with jaggery.
