The Grey Slender Loris

Loris is a nocturnal animal (active during the night), and arboreal which means it spends most of the time in the trees. The most prominent feature of the loris are his large eyes. They ensure binocular vision and perception of depth. Their eyes also have specific reflective layer (called tapetum lucidum) which provides excellent eyesight during the night. Other than eyes, loris has excellent sense of smell, which is used for the detection of the prey.

Loris are the only known "poisonous" primates. They have a patch filled with venom under its elbow used for protection against the predators. When faced with danger, loris licks its elbow and covers its teeth with poison. As soon as Loris bites its enemy, it will deliver the venom. Loris also uses venom to protect its offspring. By covering the baby with venom, mother keeps the predators away from her offspring while she searches for food.

The Grey Slender Loris can be seen and heard nearby our campsite in Wilpattu.

Dung beetles are coprophagous insects, meaning they eat excrement of other organisms. They roll dung into round balls and can roll up to 10 times their weight. Dung balls are used as a food source or breeding chambers. Also, they use dung balls to cool off on really warm days. They will climb on top of the ball to get away from the hot ground. Due to National Geographic, when moving balls of dung, a roller can pull a whopping 1,141 times its own body weight – that’s the same as a human dragging six full double-decker buses along a road! Incredible!

These amazing insects are very useful recyclers of nutrients. Without them, dung would create a breeding ground for pests.

Sloth bears' nostrils can close completely, protecting the animals from dust or insects when raiding termite nests or beehives. They have a keen sense of smell, as well as near-sight similar to that of humans.

As an adaptation for their insectivorous diet, sloth bears are missing their top two front teeth (incisors), which enables them to suck up termites and other insects with ease. Due to their diet of insects and fruit, their premolars and molars are smaller than those of other bears, but they have large canines to use for defense.

Sambar deer eat foliage, grass, shrubs, plants, fruits, and browses. These deer are capable of eating coarse foods such as bark or flax because their rumination process is efficient than that of other deer species. They can be more than 40 inches when you look at the full spread of them. Body weight ranges from 220 - 1,200 pounds. The Sri Lankan Sambar deer is one of the largest found in the world.

The Malabar Pied Hornbill is a common resident in tropical southern Asia, India, and Sri Lanka.
Both males and females have a huge, bony structure on top of their bill (casque), giving them a unique appearance. The hornbill casque is light and hollow; this enables the bird’s calls to resonate far and wide through their jungle habitat.
The male and female appear alike, except for one distinct feature. The female has a striking white orbital coloration around the eyes. The males lack this feature; instead, they have dark blueberry shade. The females tend to be slightly smaller than the male.

When a peacock fans its ornamented train for the ladies during mating season, its feathers quiver, emitting a low-frequency sound inaudible to human ears. Depending on whether they want to attract females from far away or up close, they can change the sound by shaking different parts of their feathers.

Dry zone Toque Macaque (M.s. sinica) is one of three recognized subspecias and it is a commonly found monkey in Sri Lanka. They affect ecosystem in many ways. Due to their main, fruit-based diet, these animals also act as important seed dispersers of many fruiting plants. Feeding upon small invertebrates to supplement their diet with proteins, they control population numbers of these animals.
But toque macaques also enjoy to take any food with little effort around human dwellings. With food they grab plastic bags and other materials that can affect their health. So look after your food well, as these naughty monkeys can easily steal it.

Leopards are among the best predators in the world. This big cat stalks its prey carefully and quietly, until its five to ten meters within range. Then they dash forward and takes down its victim with a bite to the throat or neck. This strong and skillful felines can run at up to 58 km/h! (36 mph), they’re super springy, too, and can leap over 6 m (20 ft) horizontally, and jump up to 3 m (9.8 ft) vertically. Their very long tails help them to balance and make sharp turns.
Sri Lanka has the highest population densities of leopards in the world and the reason is that they are on top of the food chain without any natural enemy around.
Visit Base Camp and enjoy the sightings of this incredible animal in the wild.
