Government of Lesotho Launches Ministries' Service Charters to Enhance Public Services

The Government of Lesotho has launched service charters for various Ministries to improve service delivery and transparency. The official presentation took place at the Manthabiseng Convention Centre in the presence of the Right Honourable Prime Minister, Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane, along with government Ministers and Principal Secretaries.

The Ministry of Public Service spearheaded the development of these service charters to ensure that citizens are well informed about the services provided by Government Ministries and agencies. These charters outline the services offered, required documentation, associated costs, service timelines, and contact details. The initiative aims to promote efficiency, transparency, and timely service delivery to the public.

In his address, the Prime Minister emphasized that the government's primary objective is to provide citizens with accessible, transparent, and valuable services. He underscored the importance of the public taking greater responsibility for self-sufficiency, noting that as times change, Lesotho must strive toward becoming a developed nation.

Region 5 Strengthens Commitment to Quality Physical Education in Lesotho

Following a successful strategic meeting in Lesotho on February 17-18, 2025, Region 5, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has made significant strides in advancing Physical Education and Sport in the region. The high-level discussions brought together representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, the Ministry of Education, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Country Office, the National University of Lesotho (NUL), the Physical Education Institute and Sport Association (PEISA), the Lesotho National Olympic Committee, and the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission. Together, they reaffirmed their shared commitment to fostering Quality Physical Education (QPE).

During the visit, stakeholders assessed current challenges, explored opportunities for regional collaboration, and laid the groundwork for the highly anticipated Regional Physical Education and Sport Forum, scheduled for August 2025 at NUL. Themed "Developing a Comprehensive Vision of Inclusive Access for All," the forum will be a landmark event, bringing together over 80 influential decision-makers, policymakers, and education leaders to shape the future of sport and physical education in the region.

Key Outcomes of the Meeting:
Strengthening partnerships to align with UNESCO’s 2024-2025 Programme and MINEPS VI resolutions.
Developing strategies to enhance inclusivity and accessibility in school sports.
Establishing a roadmap for the upcoming forum to drive long-term impact in the sector.

With this momentum, Region 5 and its partners are taking decisive steps to position sport as a key driver of education, equality, and resilience. As preparations for the August forum intensify, stakeholders remain optimistic that this initiative will pave the way for sustainable, high-quality physical education programs across the region.

Introduction of 15 minutes daily physical activity in Primary schools

The Ministry of Tourism, Sport, Arts and Culture and Ministry of Education have embarked on the journey to introduce a daily 15 minutes’ daily physical activity in primary schools. The 15 minutes daily activity physical activity provides an opportunity for every child to be physically active regardless of age, physical appearance and athletic performance. With this program, the child has the freedom to elect an activity which they are more comfortable with. This is done with the objective of removing a ‘fear based’ and ‘negative thinking’ towards sports and creating a positive and fun environment for development. The program forms part of the daily assembly preparing children for the day.

As a result, today, the department of Sports visited Hlotse LECSA Primary School and Leribe English Medium Primary to introduce the 15 minutes’ daily physical activity.

The 15 minutes’ daily physical activity will benefit students mentally, exercise isn’t just about the body, it is a powerful mood booster! It helps reduce stress, improve self-esteem, and even ease symptoms of depression. It will also benefit students psychologically, regular physical activity gives one a sense of competence and independence. Plus, it triggers endorphins, “happy hormones", leaving one feeling refreshed and accomplished!

This physical activity will help physiologically, when one exercises, it strengthens muscles, improves flexibility, and boosts overall fitness! A strong body supports a strong mind, helping one feel more energized every day. The last benefit which is the Social benefit, exercise brings people together! Whether one is hitting the gym, joining a sports team, or going for a run with friends, staying active is a great way to socialize and enjoy shared experiences. Ramela Foundation Announces R500,000 Sponsorship for Moshoeshoe’s Day Horse Race

Ramela Foundation held a press conference today at Avani Lesotho to announce a sponsorship of R500,000 for the Moshoeshoe’s Day horse race. This initiative, led by Bishop David Thakadu Ramela, aims to empower Basotho by fostering a greater appreciation for horse racing and developing it into a serious sport in Lesotho.

The event was graced by the presence of the Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Honourable Motlatsi Maqelepo, along with the Principal Secretary, Mr. Pokello Mahlomala, the Chief Executive Officer of Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission Mr. Lefa Moneri and the Chief Executive Officer of Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation Mr. Molupe Pheko.

In his remarks, the Minister expressed admiration for the efforts of the Ramela Foundation, stating that its support for Basotho is truly inspiring. He acknowledged that while horse racing is a beloved sport in Lesotho, financial constraints have hindered its growth, as national sports funding is often directed towards football. He expressed gratitude that the Ramela Foundation has chosen to promote horse racing and officially declared the race open, announcing that it will take place on March 15 in Mohale’s Hoek.

Bishop David Thakadu Ramela emphasized his deep love for Basotho and Lesotho, expressing his wish for the country to thrive in unity and prosperity. He called on businesses to collaborate in building a stronger Lesotho, affirming his pride in his connection to the nation. He concluded with the Sesotho proverb, "Ntja peli ha e hloloe ke sebata," meaning "Two dogs together cannot be defeated by a beast," reinforcing the idea that unity leads to success. .ls Sello Hatang
