4. LETSIE II
(c. 1869 - 1913)

PARAMOUNT CHIEF : 1905 - 1913

Named Lekena and also known as Letsienyana, Letsie II was the eldest son of the second house of Lerotholi. He was the first paramount chief to have his position confirmed by the British High Commissioner, rather than by the sons of Moshoeshoe alone. In 1910 the establishment of the Union of South Africa made provision for the incorporation of the British High Commission Territories, including Basutoland.

Fearing that this would lead to the imposition of the Union's racial policies, Letsie II sent a high powered delegation to London in 1909 to oppose incorporation, and then supported the formationof the South African Native National Congress in 1912, later renamed the African National Congress (ANC), in order to advocate for the rights of Africans in South Africa. Several significant public works projects were completed under his rule.

3.LEROTHOLI
(1836 - 1905)

PARAMOUNT CHIEF : 1891 - 1905

The firstborn son of Letsie 1 in the second house, Lerotholi was renowned for the part he played in military operations during the Gun War (1880-81). He succeeded his father as Paramount chief despite being challenged by a numberof others. Under Lerotholi's rule significant changes were made to the way in which the country was governed.

The unwieldy annual national pitso was abolished in favour of a National Council which was intended to represent the opinions of all Basotho and offer advice from Lesotho's leaders to the Paramount Chief and the Resident Commissioner. Commoners complained, however, that the Council elevated the voices of chiefs and gave little scope to their own views. Although it was simply an advisory body, the National Council oversaw the formalisation of local customary law and issued the "Laws of Lerotholi" to regulate chieftainship and local government so that disputes could be more effectively resolved.

Lerotholi was worried, however, that Lesotho was not developing economically despite its growing literacy and rates and educated class, and that the growing power of White business interests in South Africa was undermining Basotho and other Africans.

LETSIE 1
(1811 - 1891)

PARAMOUNT CHIEF: 1870 - 1891

Named Mohato at birth , Letsie 1 was the first born son of Moshoeshoe by his senior wife 'Mamohato. Although recognised as the paramount chief, his task of governing Lesotho was made difficult by the fact that his brothers Molapo and Masopha controlled large parts of the country and had little regard for his rule. His status was further diminished when, in 1871, Britain placed Basutoland under the direct rule of the Cape Colony, making the Basotho subject to laws passed by the Cape. The cape laws , administered by Magistrates, undermined the authority of the chiefs and gave more power to Cape officials.

In 1884, following a period of intense opposition and conflict, Basutoland was declared a British Protectorate, thus restoring certain powers to the chiefs under the overall authority of the Paramount Chief and British Resident Commissioner. During this period Basotho worked for short periods of time on the white-owned farms and actively participated in building the railroad and mines in South Africa. Lesotho exported large quantities of grain to the newly opened diamond and gold mines in South Africa, and trade thrived.

We get under way of the new year 2025 by elucidating the kings of Lesotho.

The First king of the Basotho Nation is Moshoeshoe 1 (c.1786 -1870)

King: 1824 - 1870

Named Lepoqo at birth, Moshoeshoe was the son of Mokhachane and Kholu of the Mokoteli clan. Moshoeshoe journeyed from his birthplace in Menkhoaneng to Botha Bothe where he established himselft as an idependent chief in 1820. After being besieged on the Botha Bothe plateau during the early stages of the lifaqane, he moved to Thaba Bosiu in mid 1824 where he established a stronghold from which his influence grew rapidly.

Moshoeshoe is now reowned as the founder of the Basotho nation. He made use of the custom of lipitso, the mafisa system, 'placing', marriage alliances and deplomacy to build the nation. From the 1803s the Basotho were exposed to new influences including the Boer settlers from the adjoining Free State - who troubled Moshoeshoe - as well as the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society, and the British colonial forces, each of whom profoundly influenced the developing nation.

During the period after 1850, more Basotho began to adopt steel ploughs and new breeds of animals, thus responding to the opportunities of the growing market economy in the region.
