Faits étonnants sur le barrage de Katse ! 😮

DID YOU KNOW?

1. THE Wall Moves

The Katse Dam wall is designed with precision instruments to monitor its movement. Yes, the dam wall shifts slightly due to water pressure and natural geological conditions. Inside the wall, a system of parallel galleries equipped with laser instruments helps engineers detect even the tiniest movements and ensure structural integrity. These galleries also act as drainage tunnels for any water seepage from the surrounding mountains.

2. The “Breathing” Dam – Flexible Engineering

One of the most astonishing facts is that the bedrock beneath the dam was found to be seismically unstable, meaning it had the potential to shift due to natural forces. To address this, engineers included a movable joint at the base of the dam, allowing it to flex and absorb shocks. This adaptability makes Katse Dam one of the most resilient large-scale dams in the world.

3. A Gravity-Driven Water Supply System

• The dam’s elevation of 1,993 meters above sea allows the water to move by gravity-No pumping is required, making this one of the most energy-efficient large-scale water transfer systems in the world

5. An Underground River Leading to South Africa

Katse Dam’s water doesn’t just stay in Lesotho—it travels 82 km through an underground tunnel to the Ash River in South Africa, eventually supplying water to Gauteng, including Johannesburg. It’s mind-blowing to think that beneath the mountains, an entire river system is hidden, flowing unseen under the border

ENGINEERING MARVELS & WONDERS OF LESOTHO; (LHWP) Lesotho Highlands Water Project underground Tunnels:

The Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) consists of a series of dams and tunnels designed to transfer water from Lesotho to South Africa while generating hydroelectric power for Lesotho.

🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸

1. MOHALE TO KATSE TUNNEL:
• Length: 32 km underground
• Purpose: Transfers water from Mohale Dam to Katse Dam to increase the available water for export to South Africa.
• Construction: The tunnel was excavated using a drill-and-blast method, ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

• FUN FACT: Water can also flow in reverse from Katse to Mohale, making it one of the rare bidirectional tunnel in the world.

🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸

2. Katse to Muela to South Africa Tunnel
• Total Length: 82 km underground (Katse to Muela: 45 km, Muela to South Africa: 37 km)
• Purpose: This is the main water transfer tunnel that channels water from Katse Dam through Muela Hydropower Station and into South Africa.
• Construction:
• Uses a gravity-driven system, meaning water moves without the need for pumps.
• Includes an underground hydroelectric power station at Muela that generates electricity for Lesotho.

• UNBELIEVABLE FACTS:
• The tunnel drops 750 meters in elevation from Katse to Muela, creating massive water pressure to generate electricity before the water even leaves Lesotho!
• The tunnel was lined with concrete to withstand this pressure, making it one of the most complex gravity-fed tunnel systems in the world.

🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸

3. Polihali to Katse Transfer Tunnel (Phase II)
• Length: 38 km underground
• Purpose: Transfers water from the newly built Polihali Dam to Katse Dam.
• Construction:
• Excavated using a mix of drill-and-blast and Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM).
• The TBMs were imported in massive pieces and transported by a convoy of 10 oversized trucks from Durban, South Africa, through the mountains of Lesotho.

• MIND-BLOWING FACTS:
• This tunnel will increase the water supply from Lesotho to South Africa from 780 million cubic meters per year to 1,270 million cubic meters!
• The construction involves two TBMs digging from opposite ends (Katse and Polihali) until they meet precisely underground—an engineering challenge requiring pinpoint accuracy!

🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸

4. Polihali Diversion Tunnels
• Number of Tunnels: 2
• Length: Each is about 1 km long
• Diameter: One is 7m wide, the other 9m wide
• Purpose: Temporary tunnels to divert the Senqu River, creating a dry construction site for Polihali Dam.

• ASTONISHING FACTS: These tunnels allow engineers to redirect an entire river, essentially forcing nature to take a detour while they build the dam!

🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸

Why This Project is a Must-See
• The LHWP tunnels are hidden engineering wonders—miles of underground infrastructure carrying billions of liters of water across a country.
• The Muela Hydropower Station operates underground, making it an almost invisible but vital source of power.
• The tunnel boring process is so precise that even a 1 cm misalignment can be disastrous—yet engineers meet their targets over tens of kilometers!

🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸 🇱🇸

These tunnels are some of the longest and most complex water transfer systems in the world, playing a critical role in Lesotho’s economy and South Africa’s water security.

🌉 Senqu Bridge – A Landmark in Lesotho’s Future! 🚧 A Bridge That “Slides” into Place;

📍 Mokhotlong, Lesotho – Rising above the Senqu River, the Senqu Bridge is set to become one of Lesotho’s most significant engineering marvels! This 825-meter-long structure is the largest bridge in the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) Phase II, ensuring vital road connectivity after the completion of the Polihali Dam.

💡 Key Facts About Senqu Bridge:
✅ Height: 90 meters – one of the tallest in the region!
✅ Type: Extradosed bridge – a mix of a girder and a cable-stayed bridge. 🔄 Instead of traditional construction, the bridge is built using an incremental launching method. This means sections of the bridge deck are cast on land and then pushed out over the piers, reducing the need for heavy scaffolding in the deep valley
✅ Construction Technique: Incremental launching – reducing environmental impact while ensuring durability.
✅ Completion Date: 2026
✅ Cost: M2 billion
✅ Built by: WRES Senqu Bridge Joint Venture (Webuild, Italy.Raubex RSA,Enza RSA& Sigma Construction from Lesotho).

🏗 Why is this bridge important?
🔹 Restores connectivity between Mokhotlong and Maseru via the A1 road, even when the Polihali Reservoir is full.
🔹 Supports the LHWP, which will increase water supply to South Africa and boost hydropower in Lesotho by 40%!
🔹 A modern engineering feat using cutting-edge construction methods.
