NERINGA FOREST ARCHITECTURE TOURS IN APRIL 2022

This month NFA launches all new tours which will focus on the infrastructure and the different factors that form Nida, management of the forest and dunes. Gatherings take place every Saturday and serve as opportunities to discuss and learn about the processes taking place in Neringa. The tours usually happen in Lithuanian but there is possibility to organize on the spot translations in English.

Today is the day when Kaunas will start shining at its best. Literally🤩 Today the festivities of Kaunas 2022 - Kaunas being the official European capital of Culture - will start with the opening performance in the island of Nemunas river. The name of the performance is symbolic- Sukilimas, meaning Rising or Revolt:) So Kaunas is Rising.

To get back to the basics- Kaunas is the 2nd biggest city in Lithuania, right in the middle in the country. It has grew up in the place where two biggest rivers Nemunas and Neris meet. Hanseatic trade town in the Middle ages, city of tsarist Russian fortress before the First World War, Kaunas happened to be a capital of Lithuania in the period during World Wars. So Kaunas has been called a temporary or provisional capital for very long time. But these time are about to end because now it converted "From provisional to modern"😀 Well, it has actually happened a bit earlier than now😉Modern is about the modern architecture which is really amazing and rich. Unsurprisingly, Kaunas filed an application for being added to the Unesco's List of objectives of outstanding universal value. Lithuania or Lietuva as local Lithuanians name it had different shapes and sizes throughout history. At the time of king Mindaugas who united Lithuanian lands in XIV century, it was as small as 120 000 km², later (XV c.)- 930 000 km², and from XVI century it started to get smaller. Nowadays its size is 65 300 km². Latest territories attached to the Republic of Lithuania are resorts of Palanga and Druskininkai, together with the region of Klaipėda (all - after the I World War).

Latest shape is from 1945 and it can transform to many objects. For example- deserts at Solt Dining. Every year Lithuania turns to a gastronomic wonderland during the Week of Gastrony. And it is happening now! Welcome to taste Lithuania.

Lithuania boasts to have a unique site- Hill of crosses near the city of Siauliai. It's such a spectacular place with number of crosses close to half a million. There's a relatively small castle-hill planted with all these mostly wooden crosses which came here from all over the world. The hill of crosses was erected by local in soviet times, soviet officials were not happy to see crosses and signs of religion so crosses were buldozed several times. But people were persistent and resolute- planted and planted crosses up to the Independence era in 1990. The Pope John Paul II also paid a visit to the Hill in Crosses back in 1993 showing the significance to this absolutely special site.

By the way, UNESCO recognizes cross-making as intangible cultural heritage of Lithuania, a “symbol of national and religious identity,” uniting the community in the face of adversity.

Lithuanians are lucky to have at least 2 birthdays of their native country. One comes from 16 February, 1918, another commemorates the restoration of Independence in 11 March, 1990. So it's really nice to see flags everywhere, rides of hundreds flag-decorated cars, flags in the trees, windows and balconies. Also many variations of Lithuanian symbol- Castle of Gediminas in Vilnius.
