At the end of the 18th century, after the , authorities expropriated the Church of Saint John and the abbey was altered so as to house a military which functioned until 1867. After the State took over the premises, Neumünster was used as for male inmates up to 1980.

After more than 10 years of restoration works the abbey reopened to the public in 2004 to become a popular cultural and conference centre, renamed “Centre Culturel de Rencontre Abbaye de Neumünster - neimënster”. The centre hosts con- certs, performances, seminars and exhibitions. The “Events, Catering & Meetings” department offers taylor-made solutions which are conform to the “green charter” it developed. The centre offers concert, theatre and conference halls, as well as seminars and open-air concerts. The complex also hosts the European Institute of Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, the Pierre Werner Cultural Institute as well as a restaurant

, undoubtedly one of ’s biggest , takes place every year on in honour of the birthday.
The celebration of the sovereign’s birthday is a long-established tradition dating all the way back to the 18th century. During the reign of , it was decided to celebrate on the 23 June, despite the fact that she was born on 23 January. As the weather in January was deemed unsuitable for outdoor festivities, the celebrations were postponed to 23 June. The date hasn’t changed since.
The festivities start on the eve of National Day,ng off with a solemn changing of the royal guard in front of the Grand Ducal Palace, followed by a procession (“Fakelzuch”) through the city’s streets and, later on in the evening, topped off with impressive displays fired from the Adolphe bridge. All throughout the night, the streets of Luxembourg City are transformed into a big open-air party with live concerts and DJs, attracting thousands of people.
On 23 June, official ceremonies are held throughout the day, including the military parade, the Te Deum in the late afternoon as well as the traditional 21-gun salute from Fetschenhof. National Day wouldn’t be complete without renditions of the national anthem “Ons Heemecht”. picture

Did you get your today at the ?

The Éimaischen festival dates back to at least 1827. One of the most iconic events in Luxembourg's calendar of traditional festivals, it is a craft market that mainly features pottery and ceramics. Among the most popular items at the market are small bird-shaped terracotta whistles known as Péckvillercher, which are sold only at the Éimaischen. Since their appearance varies each year, people queue up first thing in the morning to get their hands on these coveted collectibles. The bird-like calls of these whistles mingle with the sounds of other folkloric activities, creating a uniquely charming atmosphere.
