Wandering Gliders Safaris, walks, communities and new friendships is what we seek when we plan our journeys. What does it mean to go on a ‘’wildlife holiday’’?

WANDERING GLIDERS, presented to you by JUNGLE HUT, our boutique wilderness lodge in south India, is our way of getting this idea of travel across to everyone. There is always more to a destination than just safaris. Our experience of holidaying ‘’the way we like it’’ and working in the national parks of the Indian subcontinent and the African landmass have impressed upon us what wildlife travel e

ncompasses. At JUNGLE HUT, the wilderness lodge we run in South India, we have always strived to connect ourselves and our guests with nature through our daily routines and initiatives over the last 30 years. Safaris, walks, communities and most importantly, new friendships, is what we seek when we plan our travel. This combination has made every trip we have been on or put together, ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT! SMALL GROUP JOURNEYS AND PRIVATE HOLIDAYS COMBINED WITH THE INSIGHTS OF AN EXCEPTIONAL TOUR LEADER IS EXACTLY WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT. WANDERING GLIDERS is our way of spreading this idea of travel to everyone. Have you ever noticed the stacks of thousands of dragonflies skimming over open spaces throughout India, both before and after the monsoon rains? Did you know that these tiny miniscule insects cross the oceans annually to migrate between the Indian landmass and Africa? These beautiful golden brown dragonflies are the Wandering Gliders Pantala flavescens. They don’t look like much for a person who is not keen on entomology or dragonflies, but studies show that they undertake one of the longest insect migrations ever documented, every year. These dainty insects arrive in India in the millions with the south-west monsoon winds, flying high up in the skies where the currents are strongest. They breed in the Indian wetlands through the rains and the young return to Africa in September with the north-east winds. This migration of a million insects is not just an isolated event, it cannot be. The mass movement of insects triggers the migration of thousands of birds like Amur falcons, Pied Cuckoos, European Bee eaters and many more such birds and insects that cross the oceans, following the trail left by the Wandering Gliders. What drives these miniscule insects to brave the odds and cross the oceans to new lands? Maybe it’s the same thing that drives us to travel too…
We wish to be the Wandering Glider, triggering the birds in you to follow us, as we lead you to destinations we love, triggering as we go, the connect with nature, the love for everything wild and the importance of conscious travel. Each trip is carefully curated to encompass these aspects and seasoned with a dash of fun…the final ingredient that makes a truly great holiday.

Bera . One of the few places on earth where leopards thrive among human settlements.

As the sun started to set, we quickly tanked up on coffee , packed our cameras and headed off in an open gypsy towards the towering granite hills now covered by anogeissus scrub.

We watched the Rabari tribesmen dressed in brilliant red turbans and white kurtas, herd their goats down the hill and through our paths.

Not too long after they left , a huge male leopard squeezed out of a cave, yawned like no one's watching and came to take his place on this open rock , where we quietly sat and watched in awe and excitement.

Normally a 10hour drive from Bangalore, would mean exhaustion once you've reached your destination. But this wasn't the case for Neil and Eroica! They had more energy than Duracell bunnies and wanted to immediately go check out the 'night life' in Munnar. We quickly wore our gumboots , took our cameras and headed off in the rain to find the endemic *Large Scaled Pit-Viper* ! After almost an hour of searching through the dense and wet foliage finally spotted one, but this one had perched itself on a brown branch, completely motionless. What an amazing sight to behold ! We spent an hour just observing and photographing this magnificently coloured viper . Amazing, isn't it ? Want to see what they saw ? Just DM us to get more information on our upcoming tours.

Over the last 5 days, our guests Neil and Eroica explored the gorgeous ever-changing landscape of the Eravikulam National park in munnar ,where they got to witness the Nilgiri Tahr like never before .

Walking through the thick jungles in search of highly endangered species like the Resplendent shrub frog and the Gunther's vinesnake ,also gave them the opportunity to try out some tongue tickling wild raspberries. The incessant rains and the hundreds of leeches did not stop them from getting down to back breaking positions just to get the perfect photograph of these magnificent species !

Being first timers into the world of macro , Neil and Eroica loved every second of their tour and wanted to learn more, so he ended up getting himself the perfect field guide for his future tours ! Keep watching this space to see all the amphibians, reptiles and mammals they saw with us .

Velavadar Blackbuck National Park

For trip details: bit.ly/WildGujaratGirVelavadarLittleRaanofKutch

Velavadar National Park is one of the last well protected true grassland habitats of the country. In a time when grasslands across the country have come under the axe of development, velavadar is truly a last standing gem. The savannah like habitat is home to thousands of blackbuck and nilgai. Packs of wolves, secretive hyenas and smaller carnivores like jungle cats and foxes are the main predators of this landscape. The grassland and wet marsh mix has created a great habitat for specialist birds, including playing host to the largest congregation of harriers, a kind of long-winged raptor, in the planet. This harrier congregation is one of the greatest avian spectacles of the planet. The great open habitat and the abundance of wildlife makes Velavadar a photographer’s dream.

Valparai – Lair of the Macaques

For trip details: bit.ly/wanderinggliders

A quaint tea town, Valparai, located among the Annamalais in Tamil Nadu, has gained reputation over the ears as a wildlife hotspot of the Western Ghats. The high leopard density in these hills is one thing, but the presence of endemics like lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri Tahr, brown mongoose and a plethora of birds makes for a great mix of species that can be seeked out with the help of the experienced researchers and guides of the region. The drive up from Aaliyar dam up to Pudhuthottam shola forests is one of the best ways to experience the gradual habitat changes and the species gradient of the Western Ghats.

Thattekaad – South India’s Bird Paradise

For trip details: bit.ly/wanderinggliders

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, popularly known as Thattekaad Bird Sanctuary, is a very special patch of evergreen forest located on the banks of the Periyar River. The area is known for one of the highest species diversities in the Western Ghats with most of the endemics present here. Highlight species like the frogmouth, bay owl, oriental dwarf kingfisher, heart-spotted woodpecker, white-bellied treepie and the black baza are best seen in these forests. The diversity of species present here is supported by a wide range of habitats from tall evergreen forests, myristica swamps, marshes and the flowing Periyar River. Thattekaad is also one of the best places to see the Malabar Slender Loris, an old world nocturnal monkey. Walking these trails, watching and listening to the birds and seeking out hidden feathered jewels with the expert guides is definitely one of the top experiences in the Western Ghat landscape.

Tadoba National Park also known as "Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve" (TATR) is one of India’s 47 project tiger reserves and Maharastra’s oldest and largest national park. The vast dry bamboo and deciduous wilderness of TATR is considered to be one of the best places for tracking the Royal Bengal Tiger; currently up to 40 tigers (including cubs) thrive in the various tourism zones of Tadoba. Wildlife sightings also include sloth bears, wild dogs (Dholes), leopards, gaur, spotted deer, chital to name a few. Drives in the buffer and night drives around the edge of the park are very productive for wildlife viewing, especially as the season heads towards the warmer times.

Snow Leopards and the Winter World of Ladakh

For trip details: bit.ly/SeekingSnowLeopards

Ladakh, known for its picturesque landscapes and Buddhist monasteries found throughout the region is also home to the holy grail of mountain wildlife – the Snow Leopard – one of the least spoken about big cat in India. It has always remained an animal that managed to retain its mythical status, until recently. An expedition into the winter world of Ladakh, focuses on the snow leopard, its mountain habitat and the people who share their spaces with these majestic ghost cats. The journey takes you right into the heart of snow leopard country and places you in the hands of some of the best snow leopard trackers on the planet. Apart from the snow leopards, we have a chance of coming across urial, bharal, ibex, wolves, foxes, golden eagles, bearded vultures and a plethora of high altitude specialist birds. The experience of walking among the trans-himalayan mountains, entering a pahadi home or visiting a monastery that is devoid of the tourist swarms can be as rewarding as coming across some of the specialist wildlife of the region.

Singalila – The Land of the Red Panda

For trip details: bit.ly/wanderinggliders

Singalila National Park, the magic kingdom of the eastern Himalayas, is famous for its fantastic hikes, broadleaf forests and fantastic panoramic Himalayan views. It is located at an altitude of more than 7000 ft absl and is one of the well protected Rhododendron and montane forest habitats in the region. Red Pandas or the firefox, seek refuge among the large trees and bamboo groves of this park. Finding the Red Panda in these forests is possible only because of the dedicated trackers who look for wild pandas every single day to keep track of the populations. The park is also home to many other mammal species like leopards, clouded leopards, martens, leopard cats, golden cats, serow and muntjac. The eastern Himalaya is rich in its avifauna and Singalila shines as a birding hotspot with birds like the satyr tragoan, blood pheasants, fire-tailed myzornis, laughing thrushes, parrotbills and many species of sunbirds and fulvettas. The endangered Himalayan newt breeds in the high altitude pools among the park in the summer and early monsoon months.

Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve, an oasis in the Aravalli hills, is located near the small town of Sawai Madopur in Rajasthan. It’s one of those parks where charismatic individual tigers have shaped the face of tiger conservation in our country and the families of those tigers roam the forests and ruins even today. The reserve has the Banas river to the north and the Chambal river to the south and many water bodies within, making it home to over 300 bird species. Wildlife sightings include sloth bears, leopards, hyenas, different species of deer and there have been occasional sightings of the elusive caracal. The erstwhile hunting grounds of the Maharajas, Ranthambhore has some spectacular ruins, especially the towering Ranthambore Fort located at the heart of the park and many beautiful lakes that are spread around the various zones of the reserve. Dhok, the most common tree in the forest, creates a very interesting Vindhyan habitat around which every species, from the deer to the tiger, thrive.

Pench – The Land of the Jungle Book

For trip details: bit.ly/SatpuraAndPench

Pench Tiger Reserve is situated on the southern reaches of the Satpura Hills, getting its name from the Pench river that flows through the park. The park has a healthy mix of wildlife, with one of the highest known densities of spotted deer. This ensures a very good big cat population. Dhole, jackals, wolves, sambar, chousingha and gaur are other important species. The overall drier teak forests of Pench dotted with open meadows and the backwaters of the Pench River create great long range viewing lines for wildlife. The habitat mix also ensures that Pench is a great place to observe raptors and a variety of owls.

For trip details: bit.ly/wanderinggliders

The Nilgiris, an off shoot sub-range of the Western Ghats, is one of the oldest geological formations in the subcontinent. The Nilgiri mastiff forms its own biosphere reserve. It houses about 3500 species of flowering plants, out of which 1500 are endemic to the Western Ghats. The fauna consists of over 100 species of mammals, 550 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles and amphibians and 300 species of butterflies. Over the years large swathes of the slopes have been taken over by plantations of tea. The district is centered at Ooty, known as the “Queen of Hill Stations”. Coonoor 19 kms from Ooty and Kotagiri 31 kms from Ooty, are the other major hubs. The Nilgiris comprises of rolling grasslands, dense sholas, streams running down the slopes and forming waterfalls and vast expanse of tea plantations interspersed with vegetable gardens. The wilderness, the traditions of planters, local tribes and their ways, the historic railway that cuts through these hills and add to this, the recent efforts of various individuals and organisations to keep the earlier mentioned facets intact, makes a visit to the Nilgiris an unforgettable experience with many interwoven layers.

Munnar, the tea town nestled among the rugged mountains of the Annamalais. These mountains, dotted covered with rolling grasslands interspersed with rocky outcrops and shola forests, supports a wide range of Western Ghat high altitude endemics. Located between the Palghat gap and Shencottah gap, this region is a haven for specialist wildlife that is restricted here owing to the gaps in the mountains. Manvar - Diving Into the Dunes and Flying Among Cranes

For trip details: bit.ly/SouthernRajasthanJodhpurBeraManvar

Manvar, located in the heart of the sand dune region of Rajasthan, a part of the Thar desert, is one of the best places to experience the grandeur and the communities of the Indian desert. One of the highlights of a visit to Manvar is a drive through the sand dunes to reach the luxurious camp that is located picturesquely among towering dunes. Manvar promises eye-opening experiences into the life of desert dwellers, their culture and the camels that play a big role in daily life here. Manvar is also close to the village of Khichan, the place where thousands of demoiselle cranes congregate every winter owing to the conservation efforts and the feeding by the locals; an association that has continued for over 50 years. This is easily one of the natural history wonders of the planet.

Little Raan of Kutch – Wilderness Amongst the Salt Flats

For trip details: bit.ly/WildGujaratGirVelavadarLittleRaanofKutch

The arid salt flats of the Little Rann of Kutch in South Western Gujarat are one of the most interesting wilderness habitats in the world. The area was protected to ensure the conservation of the endangered Asiatic wild ass (Khur). Other mammals like foxes, jungle cats, hyenas, wolves and few others are occasionally seen crossing the never ending salt pans. A large number of bird species migrate to the area in winter. Birds special to the region are the Macqueen’s bustard, sociable lapwing, short eared owl, a large number of species of raptors, flamingos and larks, all of these made extra special by the setting of the never ending flat land that they settle among. The sheer vastness of the flats, the stark environment, the primitive salt extraction techniques followed by the locals and the ability to drive cross country across these flats makes for a surreal wilderness experience.

Kaziranga National Park located in the floodplains of the Brahmaputra in the state of Assam has deservingly won the title of a UNESCO world heritage site. With the Brahmaputra river in the north and the Karbi-Anglong hills in the south, this haven is home to a plethora of wildlife species like the elephant, the indian one-horned rhinos, wild water buffaloes, tigers, swamp and hog deer, mugger crocodiles, otters and many other species. The endangered Gangetic river dolphins are found in the waters of the Brahmaputra. The park is known for its primate diversity too, being home to many interesting species including the hoolock gibbon, the only wild ape in the subcontinent. KNP has earned many accolades for its efforts in conserving the one-horned rhinoceros and today has over 2000 living in the park. The swamps, woodlands and the open grasslands support over 500 bird species from the charismatic hornbills to the highly threatened Bengal florican.
