The recipe was created more than 70 years ago, when nobody had refrigerators in their homes and people used ice picks to break up big blocks of ice into smaller pieces. If you want to make some delicious coffee frappé, the first thing that you’ll need is a blender. Make some first-rate coffee and leave it to cool. We used the Capriccio blend because it offers an ideal balance between rich flavour and a full body. Put five ice cubes in the blender and crush them, then add two espresso cups of coffee, three tablespoons of sugar, 150 ml of milk, two teaspoons of cocoa powder and blend for four to five minutes until the consistency is just right. Decorate it however you like with your choice of toppings and unwind as you savour the taste sensations!

The spread of coffee once caused problems in religious circles because Catholic priests considered it the “drink of the devil” due to its stimulating, energy-giving effects. Pope Clement VIII – who was famous for having Giordano Bruno burned at the stake and reforming ecclesiastical customs – was urged to ban it. Legend has it that the Pope tasted the beverage and said “it is so delicious that it would be a pity to let the infidels have exclusive use of it”, then proceeded to baptize it so that it could exist in God’s grace. Consequently, in Italy coffee soon became a popular gift on special occasions.
