Gnawa music has its roots in West Africa, and is a blend of African rhythms and Islamic spiritual messages. The Dadès Gorges (Arabic: مضايق دادس; French: Gorges du Dadès, pronounced [ɡɔʁʒ(ə) dy dadɛs]) are a series of rugged wadi gorges carved out by the Dadès River in Morocco.[1] The river originates in the High Atlas range of the Atlas mountains, flowing some 350 kilometres (220 mi) southwest before joining the Draa River at the edge of the Sahara.[1] The many-colored walls of the gorges range anywhere from 200 to 500 meters (650 to 1600 feet).[1] The name was given to the river by King Anu the ruler of ancient Iberia in the first century A.D.

Built in a fertile agricultural area, it developed from the 3rd century BC onward as a Berber, then proto-Carthaginian, settlement before being the capital of the kingdom of Mauretania. It grew rapidly under Roman rule from the 1st century AD onward and expanded to cover about 42 hectares (100 acres) with a 2.6 km (1.6 mi) circuit of walls. The city gained a number of major public buildings in the 2nd century, including a basilica, temple and triumphal arch. It is considered a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
The site of the ksar has been fortified since the 11th century during the Almoravid period.[2][3] None of the current buildings are believed to date from before the 17th century, but they were likely built with the same construction methods and designs as had been used for centuries before.[1] The site's strategic importance was due to its location in the Ounila Valley along one of the main trans-Saharan trade routes.[1] The Tizi n'Tichka pass, which was reached via this route, was one of the few routes across the Atlas Mountains, crossing between Marrakech and the Dra'a Valley on the edge of the Sahara.[3][1] Other kasbahs and ksour were located all along this route, such as the nearby Tamdaght to the north

From your Hotel or the airport in Marrakesh, we will set off for the Dades Gorges. Passing through Tizi-n-Tishka in the high Atlas Mountains we will then visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou which has also been the backdrop for many films including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Alexander. After lunch, we’ll enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes and historical monuments of Taourirt Kasbah in Ourzazate, Skoura, and the Valley of the Roses, famous for its annual Festival of Roses. We’ll also pass through the Berber villages of El Kelaa des M'Gouna and Boumalene du Dades where we will spend the night.
Dades Valley- Merzouga via Todra Gorge
Today's target point is arriving in Merzouga which is known for the highest sand dunes in North Africa. THE DESERT! It is called the Erg Chebbi Sahara desert and it is about 20 km long and 5 km wide and is a unique, multifaceted environment. On our way, we will have the chance to see many oases such as the oasis of Tinjdad. We will continue our tour passing through the little Berber towns of Mellab and Touroug. Arrive at Rissani where we will have lunch. After this break, we will continue our way enjoying the green oasis of palm trees of Ziz –Tafilalet and the black Hamada before arriving at Merzouga. Later we will enjoy bathing in the warm waters as well as having a local dinner and listening to Berber music. Night in a Riad

After breakfast, you will go all the way around the dunes via the oasis of MERZOUGA, the nomadic depository, and KHAMLIA village (Blacks’ village You’ll visit the Gnawa people, originally slaves brought from Sudan, to experience their music and lifestyle. Not far away there’s the lake of Merzouga, with its bird populations, you’ll leave for Rissani. Once called Sijilmassa, this was the meeting place for the salt caravans, coming from Timbuktu in Mali. Here you’ll walk through the souk, selling spices, vegetables, and clothes. After a lunch pizza in Rissani, you will travel back to your riad where your camel will be awaiting you. After a glass of mint tea. After lunch, we will make our way to start our camel trek. All unnecessary luggage can be left in safe rooms at the hotel. The 90-minute camel trek will take us to a Berber camp in the middle of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, the highest in North Africa. The camp consists of several comfortable Berber tents equipped with mattresses and linen, a restaurant, and a kitchen. The evening will consist of dinner followed by entertainment provided by Berber drums.
Merzouga - Ziz Valley - Midelt - Ifran - Fez
Before sunrise, our camel warden will wake you to ascend the dunes and find the sun emerging above the horizon. During the winter season, when the days are short, we will start the camel trek and pause to meet the sunrise on the route. Arriving at the hotel we will be able to have showers and breakfast, before continuing our journey to Fez.
We leave Merzouga en route to Fez, passing through many places: Erfoud, Errachidia, Ziz Valley, Meditlt, Cedar Forests of Azrou, Ifrane, and Fez. On a good day, you can catch a glimpse of the monkeys that live in the forests. We will stop for lunch along the way in one of the many restaurants. Our guide will make sure you reach your chosen Riad or Hotel. Here we will leave at your Riad or Hotel at the end of the 3 days tour.
