Tell me, in which country, after three days, there is food on the roadsides, and no one in need.
Tell me, in which country, the village residents shout at a helicopter in the sky, enough here go to the other villages.
Tell me, in which country, its cities and villages competed in running food and clothing trucks.
Tell me, in which country, young and old carry bread and blood to the wounded and the homeless.
Tell me, in which country, a barber sets up his chair amidst the ruins and tends to the men's haircuts.
Tell me, in which country, an elder on his bike hands over half a sack of flour and leaves.
Tell me, in which country, from afar, a doctor takes a break from his/her job, and rushes to help the injured and the broken.
Tell me, in which country, a grieving woman invites her savior for a cup of tea and saffron.
Tell me, in which country, a woman takes off her only ring and gives it as a sacrifice for those in need.
Tell me, in which country, a man loses his entire family and remains patient, grateful, thanking God.
Tell me, in which country, from the top of a collapsed house, an old woman makes her foreign guests laugh. Tell me, in which country, children lose their fathers and then become the sons and daughters of an entire nation. It was an earthquake of the earth, and we were a flood of love.

A rare, powerful earthquake struck Morocco late Friday night, killing more than 2,000 people and damaging buildings from villages in the Atlas Mountains to the historic city of Marrakech. The full toll was not known as rescuers struggled to get through boulder-strewn roads to the remote mountain villages hit hardest.

The quake was the biggest to hit Morocco in 120 years, and it toppled buildings and walls in ancient cities made from stone and masonry not designed to withstand quakes.

Ait Benhaddou
With the help of some Hollywood touch-ups, this Unesco-protected red mudbrick ksar (fortified vilage) seems frozen in time, still resembling its days in the 11th century as an Almoravid caravanserai. Movie buffs may recognize it from Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth (for which much of Aït Ben Haddou was rebuilt), Jewel of the Nile (note the Egyptian towers) and Gladiator. A less retouched kasbah can be found 6km north along the tarmac from Aït Ben Haddou: the Tamdaght kasbah, a crumbling Glaoui fortification topped by storks’ nests.
