Don't mind us, just taking in all the beauty that is Boumalne Dades gorges 🤩😍🇲🇦

As the local saying goes, the wind has a son who lives in Boumalne, which is why he rips down this valley to visit him in winter. Sitting in the rain shadow of the Central Atlas, the Dadès Gorge presents a dramatic landscape: ancient rust-red and mauve mountains stripped back to zigzagging layers of strata and knobbly rock formations. A rush of springtime water puddles in the valley where irrigation channels siphon it off to fields of wheat and orchards of fig, almond and olive trees. A series of crumbling kasbahs and ksour (fortified villages) line the valley in the Berber villages of Aït Youl, Aït Arbi, Aït Oudinar, Aït Ouffi and Aït Toukhsine.

WHAT IS A RIAD?

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MOROCCAN RIADS

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house specifically known for its enclosed garden and courtyard. Riads are very common in Morocco, they used to be homes for the wealthy merchants and traders. Nowadays, riads all over the kingdom of Morocco have been converted into luxury guest houses for the sake and enjoyment of local and foreign travelers.

These traditional buildings called “Riads”played a major role in making Morocco one of the best touristic destinations in the world. Experiencing the true Moroccan way of living by staying in a Riad instead of a regular hotel, is a dazzling tourist experience for visitors from all around the world.

WHAT IS A RIAD?

A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an indoor garden and courtyard. They are located within the old city “Medina” walls.

Generally, the Riad is fully enclosed inside, insulated with high-strength, neutral walls and with minimal vents to keep out heat and street noise…

Riads are also known for their open-ceiling structure. Usually, the indoor courtyard of these charming buildings is decorated with colored traditional mosaics called “ Zellij” and emphasized with marble fountains in the center with plants, trees and flowers all around.

The exquisite hotel rooms are often located on the second floor, while the common areas and dining rooms are located on the ground floor. Another Riads’ particularity is the vast rooftop terraces with panoramic views on the Medina.

THE ORIGINS OF RIAD’S ARCHITECTURE

The word “ Riad ” or “ Ryad” is derived from the Arabic word “رياض”which stands for “garden”.

The origin of the Riad structure dates back to ancient civilizations, and is a perfect mix of different architectures. Even though houses that are built around central courtyards have always existed throughout the ancient Greek-Roman world, nowadays, they’re particularly distinguished in the Moroccan-Andalusian architecture. The courtyard is also an ancient feature of Middle Eastern residential architecture, and the arranged gardens of Islamic architecture are dating back to Iranian civilization.

The drive through the Gorges du Dadès is one of the most scenic drives in the world and it’s easy to see why.

The Dadès Gorges is located in Tinghir Province of the Drâa-Tafilalet administrative region, in the shadows of the Atlas Mountains. The gorge was carved out by the Dadès River, which originates in the High Atlas range and flows through the gorge.

Driving is the best way to see this geological marvel, but this drive is not for the faint of heart. The road features very high and winding sections with no form of barrier to stop you from barreling off of the road and down into the gorge. In fact, this road is usually regarded as one of top 5 most dangerous roads in the world due to its steep gradient and hairpin turns.

If you are prone to car sickness, you may want to skip this one.

For those feeling adventurous, it just might be the highlight of your trip to Morocco!

📌 Moroccan Tajine...

After couscous, the tagine is probably the most well-known traditional dish of Moroccan cuisine. Bringing a beautiful handmade and possibly painted tagine from Morocco is therefore highly recommended. Continue to enjoy slow-cooking at home with the spicy aromas and flavours of the North African continent.
Easy to make and delicious to serve in a traditional way.

How do you prepare a tagine?
Like this:

Ingredients:

(Serves 6)

12 drumstick chicken
2 preserved lemons
6 onions
10 g turmeric
5 g ginger powder
100 g green olives
50 cl water
1/2 bunch of fresh parsley
3 pinches of salt
6 turns of freshly ground pepper

The steps :

1. Peel the onions, chop them finely and chop the parsley.

2. In a tajine, pour a dash of olive oil and brown the chicken drumsticks on both sides. Add the onions, the preserved lemons previously cut into pieces, and the spices.

3. Pour in the water and season with salt and freshly ground pepper before mixing. Cook for at least 1 hour on low heat.

Do not open the tagine while it is cooking, as this will let the steam and flavours escape.

4. When the chicken is cooked through and the sauce has become binding, add the olives and parsley and continue cooking for a few minutes before serving the chicken tagine with preserved lemons and olives hot.
