Leave from hotelinmerzouga.com in the evenig. Free pick up from Merzouga bus station to the hostel where you can have a free room to relax before the trek begins at 6pm. You will ride a camel for about 1 hour to the middle of the sand dunes to watch the sunset. After sunset you will ride the camels to a camp. At the camp you will be served traditional tea, learn how to cook from the locals and

join the bonfire and drums with a bit of spare time for stargazing. In the morning you will wake up to the beautiful desert sunrise followed by a complemantary breakfast. You will ride the camels back to the hostel where you can have a shower and get refreshed.

The nomadic desert camp in Erg chebbi give an opportunity to Volunteer on the Nomad to live with a family whose way of life has barely changed in several years. Whether you are an adventurous , volunteer or a career breaker wanting to really get away from the stress welcome to experience a very different culture, the Nomadic families of the Moroccan Sahara desert of Erg chebi will be ready to welcome you.

A volunteer in nomadic tent in the south of Morocco

The Nomad Project is located near the aerea of Erg chebbi, known as the big Gate of the Sahara, as it marks the start of the Moroccan desert. Ergc chebbi is a full day drive from Marrakech or Fes and 700 kilometers south east of Casablanca ,where are the international aeroport.

After a night’s rest in Merzouga (30 minutes’ drive from Rissani ) you will travel for about an hour by camel to arrive at your desert host family. These travelling tribes owns camels and goats across the dunes to search out the most plentiful sources of water and oisises.

Many tourists travel to surrounding villages like Hassi labied , Merzouga or the town of rissani with its famous market (donkey market,dates,vegitables). As a volunteer, living and working with the local people you can truly experience the lifestyle of this ancient berber civilisation.

Volunteering on the Nomad Project in Morocco

As a volunteer you will be involved in a wide range of work and activities during your stay, these may include:

Caring for and milking the livestock
Helping to source underground water supplies and oases
Building the nomadic tents
Cooking bread and traditional meals in ovens under the sand (berber pizza)
Mastering local berber nomad handicrafts
Learning the amazigh language and their songs
In sharing your life with a nomadic Moroccan family you may also wish to teach them the language, games, music...

It is possible to reach the Merzouga desert from Fes and Marrakech by catching the supratours bus which cost 20 euros per person. We will pick you up from the Merzouga station and bring you back to the hostel for free.
If you arrive to Merzouga with a car, one of our staff members will pick you up from the gas station
