Tipova Monastery
Located in the area with the same name, #Tipova Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Moldova. The monastery is carved in stone on a bank of the #Nistru River.
The monastery is comprised of three monastic complexes. The first complex consists of a church named for the feast of the Holy Cross and some cells. It is far from the other two and hardly accessible. The foundation of the complex dates from XI – XV centuries. In the second monastic complex is the church of St. Nicholas. It was carved in rock the in XIV – XV centuries. The third complex dates from the XVI – XVIII centuries and encompasses 18 separate rooms joined via an interior passage.
In 1776, the #hermitage and its cells were renovated by the monk Vortolomeu, the founder of #Saharna Monastery. In 1842, the hermitage was destroyed. The monastery land was given to the #Capriana Monastery and the hermitage to the Saharna #Monastery, which managed it from 1842 till 1919. In 1912 the church situated on the hill was restored by the monk Inokentie. In 1919, under the leadership of Archimandrite Mitrophor Sofronie Neaga, of Saharna Monastery, the Tipova hermitage obtained independence.
But in 1949, the complex was closed and dispossessed of its lands. The monks took refuge at other monasteries. The complex on the hill was taken over by local agricultural concerns. The church became a #tobacco warehouse. The hermitage was cleared out and demolished.
In 1990, a group of #archeologists from Saint Petersburg found a skeleton in the monastery basement, dating from the end of the XV century.
In 1994, Tipova Monastery was renovated. Only the exterior side of the Holy Virgin Assumption temple was restored. The #church is medium size, with a rectangular shape and a belfry located above entrance. There is a fresco on the walls with floral decorations.
According to an old #legend, the great lord Stefan cel Mare married one of his wives in the Tipova monastery. She is also buried there. Another legend says that

Things to see and do in Chisinau
Chisinau is the #capital and largest city of the Republic of #Moldova. The city is Moldova's main industrial and commercial center, and is located in the middle of the country, on the river Bîc. According to the results of the 2014 census, the city proper had a population of 532,513, while the number of population in the Municipality of #Chișinău (which includes the city itself and other nearby communities) was 662,836.
Chișinău is the most economically prosperous locality in Moldova and its largest transportation hub.
While the city’s origins date back six centuries to 1420, much of Chişinău was levelled in WWII and a tragic #earthquake that struck in 1940. The city was rebuilt in #Soviet style from the 1950s onwards, and both the centre and outskirts are dominated by utilitarian buildings. That said, the centre does have a few architectural gems remaining, and is surprisingly #green and #peaceful.

Gypsies are Found Near Heaven
Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven (Russian: Табор уходит в небо, also known as Queen of the #Gypsies) is a 1975 Soviet romantic drama film by Emil #Loteanu, loosely based on short stories by Maxim #Gorky. Set in early 20th century Austria-Hungary, the film tells a love story between the gypsy girl #Rada and the horse thief Zobar of Gorky's early 1892 short story "Makar Chudra" (Russian: Макар Чудра).
It was the most attended #movie in the #Soviet Union in 1976, with 64.9 million tickets sold.
The film skillfully captures #music and #dancing. Songs such as "Malyarkitsa", "Dyves and rat", "Apple", "Nane tsoha" and others which were previously sung in the 1930s were chosen by composer Eugene #Doga and sung anew by Roma theater performers from the Romen Theatre. Roma cameos in the film were played by actors of that theater and of the Moldavian film studio, and the role of the mayor and his entourage - the actors of the Lithuanian Film Studios because the episodes were filmed in the city of Vilnius and Kaunas, as the old architecture of these cities sometimes very similar to the #Bessarabia town.

The Holy Trinity Monastery from Saharna
Saharna Monastery is located 8 km from the town of Rezina, 45 km from the town of Orhei and 120 km from #Chisinau. The monastic complex is a nature reserve. Its territory contains 670 ha of land and is under government protection.
Initially the monastic #complex embodied a small hermitage – Horodiste and a small church dug into the rock honoring of the feast of the Annunciation. In 1776, the monk Vortolomeu Crungul and several other monks came from Russia and settled the complex. They repaired the church and its cells. The hermitage church was built in 1776 in honor of the feast of the #Assumption.
In 1863, Abbot Serafim built another church for winter services and a series of cells were built. It was in honor of the feast of the Holy Virgin Mother of God.
From 1776 – 1919, there were twenty-four different abbots who led the #monastery. The #Saharna Monastery was closed in 1964. All the monks were expelled. It was then used as a store-house for a boarding school. The Holy Trinity church was used as a #hospital warehouse. The church for winter services served as a dance hall. It functioned as such until 1990, when at the request of local citizens, the monastery was reopened.
In 1992, all monastery cells including the refectory, canteen and the priory were refurbished.
The Saharna Monastery is medium-sized. Its hermitage does not have any architectural significance, but it has an indisputable historical value. Recently it has been renovated and new frescoes were painted.
The #hermitage church comprises of an altar carved in #rock, separated from the rectangular nave by a small iconostas. Some cells are contained in the building site. The front monastery wall was built from rock, so the current wall was also made from #stone blocks.
The rock monastery was restored in 1991 – 1994. The four monastery cells located at the church were renovated in 1997. There is a narrow cave near the monastery. According to a #legend, monk Vortolomeu, the monastery founder, took re
The Biggest Wine Cellar in the World
Milestii Mici - the Largest Wine Collection in the World
The #MilestiiMici winery is known in #Moldova for having the #longest wine tunnels in the country, with a total length of 200km, of which only about half are in use. The #underground tunnels even reach the borders of Chisinau and are often nicknamed the ‘underground city’.
Here at a depth of 35-85 metres, you can find the #largest wine collection of wines in the #world. Milestii Mici was made world famous in 2005 when they won the #Guinness World #Record for storing the biggest wine #collection with a whopping 2 million bottles in total!
The wines of Milestii Mici are exported across the globe from Europe, to Japan and USA. Curiously, it is also said that the Queen of England orders 1,000 bottles of the Milestii Mici red wine every year!
Milestii Mici is only 18km from #Chisinau. In the underground city each wine tunnel is named after a #grape variety or wine. On your tour, there is a popular stop where you can find a natural spring and where you can discover the structure of the old stone, which used to be the bottom of an ancient sea.
The wine tasting is done in a very traditional Moldovan way - the wine is served in hand-made ceramic pots, paired with local delicacies and enjoyed to Moldovan instrumental #music. Pure harmony.

The Best Wineries in Moldova
Beyond its green and quaint capital, #Chisinau, lie beautiful hills covered with sunflower fields, beautiful apple, plum and pear orchards and vines as far as the eye can see. #Moldova’s climate is greatly suited for winemaking. #Fossils of Vitis teutonica vines date back 25 million years - evidence of these was found around the northern Moldovan village of #Naslavcea, Ocnita. Further evidence suggests that this is one of the oldest wine producing regions in Eastern Europe - indigenous peoples began using grapes to make #wine as early as 3000 BC.
#Winemaking is deeply ingrained in Moldova’s culture through its history, tradition and economy. Once a large supplier of wine to the #SovietUnion, Moldova had to reinvent its wine culture once it gained independence. With wine supplies to Russia being cut, Moldova’s wineries started producing better wine for international and national consumption, but also to boost wine #tourism and its reputation. With National Wine Day being celebrated on the second weekend in October every year, wine tourists, Masters of Wine and adventurous #travellers come to Moldova to taste its wines, try the food and experience authentic travel.
Moldovan winters tend to be quite cool and the summers are hot, but rarely seeing extremes which would destroy the harvest and be detrimental to the #grape quality. Rainfall is moderate, creating close to perfect conditions for viticulture. In light of this, it is hardly surprising that Moldova’s wine has remained impressive, albeit distracted by powerful forces of politics and internal conflict.

Cricova Winery and Cellar
Cricova' is a Moldovan winery, located in the town with the same name, 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north of #Chişinău. Famous wine cellars make it a popular #attraction for #tourists.
The wine cellars of #Cricova is the second #largest wine cellar in #Moldova, after #MilestiiMici (largest in the world). It boasts a mere 120 kilometres (75 mi) of labyrinthine roadways, versus MM's 200 kilometres (120 mi), tunnels have existed under Cricova since the 15th century, when #limestone was dug out to help build Chişinău. They were converted into an #underground wine emporium in the 1950s.
Half of the roadways are used for #wine storage. The roads are named by the wines they store. This "#WineCity" has its warehouses, tasting rooms and other facilities underground. It goes down to 100 metres (330 ft) below ground and holds 1.25 million #bottles of rare wine. The #oldest wine dates back to 1902. The temperature is maintained at about 12 °C (54 °F) all year round (which is perfect for wine). This place is especially famous for hiding #Jews in wine #barrels during the #Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union.
The legend says that in 1966 #cosmonaut Yuri #Gagarin entered the #cellars, re-emerging (with assistance) two days later. Russian president Vladimir #Putin celebrated his 50th birthday there.
The territory used to be a #mine for limestone, a building material. In some branches excavation is still active, so the cellar is still growing. Other famous wineries in Moldova include Cojuşna and Mileştii Mici.
Cricova produce #sparkling wines in accordance with the classical #French method, purportedly invented centuries ago by the monk Dom Pierre #Perignon – "Methode #Champenoise",

The Capriana Monastery
Capriana Monastery is one of the oldest in #Moldova, located 35 km northwest of #Chisinau, in the Isnovat locality, on a bank of the river Isnavat. The first official document to contain information about #Capriana Monastery is Alexandru cel Bun's royal charter dated April 25, 1420. A royal legacy charter dated February 10, 1429 is the second document to mention the monastery.
Initially, the monastery was named after Vasnavet, which is a river flowing near the monastery. Later it was renamed Capriana, in honor of Chiprian, who was the first Superior of the #monastery. The Grigore Ureche (the chronicler) papers say that Petru Rares, the ruler of Moldova (1527–1538, 1541-1546) built Capriana’s first stone church, the Church of the Virgin's Assumption.
Because of economic decline and cultural stagnation, Capriana Monastery experienced a difficult period during the 17th century. Only after 1813, thanks to Metropolitan Bishop Gavriil Banulescu-Bodoni, was there a reinvigoration of monastic life at Capriana. Then, in 1837, Capriana Monastery was given to Zograful Monastery, which controlled it until March 9, 1873. After Russian-Turkish wars #Bessarabia was annexed to Russian Empire and in 1813 the monastery was subordinated to Bessarabia #Archiepiscopacy.
On June 29, 1940, a day after the conquest of Bessarabia by #Soviet troops, the whole estate of the monastery was confiscated. The last abbot of the monastery was the Superior Eugeniu (1952—1962). The last church service was held on October 25, 1962. The monks took refuge in other parishes. The monastery was desecrated and pillaged. In 1962, it was transformed into a #sanatorium for sick children. The monastery #refectory (dining room) was transformed into a club where dancing and drinking parties and weddings were organized.
In 1989, at the decision of the Republic of Moldova Council of Ministers, Capriana Monastery once again became a place for religious services. The first #abbot of the monastery was Archimand
