I wanted to share with you our amazing experience in North East Montenegro bordering Serbia,Kosovo and Albania. The first week we spent on the coast. For the second week we have travelled into the interior. We parked up for the night in the Biogradska Gora National Park. We were approached by a woman called Sevda Celebic. She suggested to us we go to her camp site which is located at Etno Se
lo Vukovic, bij Bijelo Polje. We arrived and we were amazed by what we found. Quirky buildings constructed from tree trunks,restaurant on stilts in a lake,small log cabins used as sleeping pods. Sevda has been working in this area for 10 years and intensively for the last two. She wants to develop tourism in this area. She has battled with government for funds with no success. She has taken it upon herself to show the world how beautiful her homeland is. Today she took us on a trip to Sipanjska Visoravan. We travelled in her jeep high up into the mountains. She had arranged for her farmer friends to give us lunch. We were greeted by Grandma (89 yrs) and family. A feast of homemade cheese,polenta,spinach filled pastries,salads with homemade bread was laid out for us in the garden behind the goat paddock. We finished with Yoghurt and honey from their hives,all washed down with rose water. We went to the spring below the farm for water for the thick powdery coffee we had to finish the meal. I could wax lyrical about this experience for ever but would love for others to have the opportunity to experience this wonderful part of the country far away from the dusty and stifling coast. The coach tours never venture away from the National Parks and all the trappings that accompany them. This region is a world away from the usual tourist haunts with a magnificent feel of the wilderness in the remote villages. The hills are heavily forested and there are opportunities for fly fishing,off road biking and bird watching. There seems to have been some small effort in encouraging people to the region many years ago but has been abandoned. Sevda is determined to continue in her endeavour to introduce the world to all the wonders of this area despite people thinking she is crazy and with very few people believing that she can succeed. She needs help and perhaps you could help her with her dream. I believe that this unique environment needs to be seen to be believed. She has a timber chalet house in the mountains which she would be happy to accommodate a journalist to help promote tourism by writing an article in the travel section.
