Do you have any Balkans travel tips to share? I'd love to hear them!

Of all my 2024 travels, the trip I'm most excited about comes in September. After years of wanting to see more of the Balkans, I'm finally making the time to set out on what's sure to be an unforgettable trip: an overland odyssey connecting eight different Balkan capitals, from Slovenia to Greece.

A few stops on this itinerary will take me to old favorites (like Ljubljana and Sarajevo). Others will take me back to places I've been only a long time ago. And the majority of this trip is brand-new to me — including North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Albania.

A trip involving so many border crossings, cultures, and complicated journeys has been a delightful challenge to sort out. I've had some great help along the way. The Sarajevo-based Funky Tours, which organizes trips throughout Bosnia and the Balkans, has been an outstanding resource. I'm already booked for the day with Srdjan from Explore Belgrade!, who taught me so much about Serbia on a previous visit there. Stefan from Miro & Sons, whom I've known for years, has been a big help in his native Montenegro. And, even though this particular trip won't take me to Bulgaria, my old friend Stefan Bozadzhiev (from Lyuba Tours and Down the Road with Stefan) has also offered some great advice.

As I'm finalizing the details of my trip, I figured I'd ask all of you, my traveling community. If you've been to these places, I'd love to get any recommendations for experiences, local guides or contacts, restaurants, accommodations, or anything else that might add a special dimension to my tip. For example, I'd love to track down some great local guides in places like Skopje, Priština, Tirana, Ohrid, and Gjirokastër.

Please share your suggestions in the Comments. Obviously, I won't be able to squeeze in everything. But I'm such a novice in these lands, any leads are appreciated!

And, of course, I'll be reporting on this trip once I'm underway (later this fall). So if you've been curious about the Balkans — as I have been, for so long — be sure to Follow me and stay tuned.

But first...very soon, I'll be reporting from somewhere much less "exotic" to most American travelers: the heartland of Germany.
