✍️The history of national park dates back to the 19th century, when Kolašin was liberated from Turkish rule and the area of today’s national park was gifted to Prince Nikola who, amazed by its beauty, decided to put it under state protection naming it “Knjažev Zabran” aka “Branik” (meaning Prince’s Reserve).

The area was preserved while it was under the protection of the Petrović’s family, but after the king fled the country after WWI and all of his property was taken away, this soon-to-become national park suffered uncontrollable woodcutting and destruction.
Officially becoming a national park in 1952, it was the first national park in Montenegro. 🌳

is famous for its maritime history during a period when it repeatedly held back Turkish attacks while the rest of the bay had fallen.

For nearly 500 years Perast was the muscle of the Adriatic. The sailors of Venice, and later Russia, came to the nautical school here and learned the skills of Perast’s mariners, cartographers and engineers.

At its peak in the mid-18th century, there were four shipyards and a fleet of around a thousand ships based here.
During this period the most beautiful buildings arose in this fortified town. Many ornate baroque palaces and magnificent dwelling-houses decorated the town of Perast all built in typical Venetian architectural style.

The fleet was eventually extinguished by the rise of the steam engine and the population, which at its peak 1,643 in the 18th century has since decreased to around 360 today.

My Guide Montenegro is part of the My Guide Network. The My Guide brand strives to be consistent across the entire network as well as social media, to represent the same values and high quality brand on every single page or reference to any part of the My Guide Network. Please follow the brand guidelines below. My Guide is focused on offering unrivalled levels of local information. This is what we pride ourselves on, and it's our promise to our users.

Each destination is run by a team on the ground who have their fingers on the pulse and write from a first-hand experience, whether they are trying out places to eat, visiting sites of interest, undertaking activities, exploring hidden 'secrets', and speaking to the locals who are 'in-the-know'.

Montenegro is natural jewel! Nearly 300 km long, its stunning Adriatic coastline is sprinkled with historic towns, lively beach resorts, secluded coves and beautiful white-stone fishing villages. The remote, often inhospitable interior, meanwhile, displays an outstanding array of snow-dusted peaks, crystal clear lakes and rivers, deep forests and canyons. The whole adds up to a diverse landscape that is extraordinary for such a small country.

The central region has at its heart the capital Podgorica and includes the important cultural towns of Cetinje, Niksic and Danilovgrad. It also contains the largest lake of the Balkans, Lake Skada which is one Europe's largest bird reseves. Important places to visit in the region include Ostrog Monastery, Lovcen Mausoleum and King Nikolas' palace. You can read more about this region in the sections starting with Cetinje.
