The Njegoš Mausoleum
Perched atop Mount Lovćen, the Njegoš Mausoleum is a must-see destination in Montenegro. Dedicated to the renowned poet, bishop, and prince Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, the mausoleum offers a blend of cultural significance and breathtaking views.
After a climb of 461 steps to the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning 360-degree views of the Bay of Kotor and the surrounding mountains.
Originally, Njegoš chose this site as his burial place and constructed a small chapel there in 1845. However, the chapel was destroyed during World War I.
In 1974, the current mausoleum was completed, designed by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. It replaced the original chapel with a grand structure that reflects Njegoš’s enduring legacy. Inside, a grand statue of Njegoš stands as a symbol of Montenegro’s enduring spirit.
Located in Lovćen National Park, the mausoleum is accessible via a scenic drive via the Serpentine road from Kotor, or directly from Cetinje. Entry to Lovćen National Park costs €2. You can also arrive via the Kotor cable car (€12-23), and a short minivan bus ride (€9). The entrance fee for the mausoleum is around €5 per person.
Happy travels!
