Phelsuma dorsivittata, also known as the dorsal-striped day gecko, is a species of gecko endemic to Madagascar.

The name "dorsivittata" refers to the distinctive dorsal stripes that adorn the back of this species. The coloration of Phelsuma dorsivittata is usually green with red or orange stripes, although this can vary depending on locality.

Unlike many other geckos, which are mainly nocturnal, Phelsuma dorsivittata is active during the day, taking advantage of sunlight to warm up and feed. Its diet consists mainly of insects and other small arthropods, which it hunts with its sticky tongue.

What kind of primate do you think this is?

Hapalemur aureus or Golden Hapalemur or Golden Bamboo Lemur.

This is a species of lemur endemic to southeastern of Madagascar, discovered in 1987. Its habitat is primary tropical forests containing giant bamboo.

They are social animals, living in small family groups of around 2 to 6 individuals. The female gives birth to one or sometimes two young. Mating takes place in July - August, with births occurring from November to December at the start of the rainy season. The young are weaned at 6 months. During the first 10 to 14 days of life, the mother chooses an isolated nest.

The Malagasy home, which is the center of the extended family, including ancestors, is furnished with care and attention, no matter how poor the householder may be. Custom dictates that furniture, doors and windows should all be astrologically aligned and placed in specific parts of the building.

Personal adornment and fashion are extremely important to the Malagasy, with both men and women taking great care of their appearance. Hats are the most popular fashion item, whether worn over one eye or with the brims demurely turned down to shade the face. It’s not unusual to see swaggering young men sporting the sort of floral straw hat that Westerners associate with old ladies at garden parties.

Malagasy life is still largely governed by the forces of nature. It is still common to find sacred offerings laid at the foot of baobabs, beside forest waterfalls or in front of royal tombs. Family outings, usually accompanied by a picnic, to a beautiful site of family or tribal importance, are a popular leisure activity.

In addition to the landscape, notions of time and date still influence the Malagasy way of life. Belief in vintana (fate) is a case in point : it influences the dates of celebrations such as circumcisions, weddings and reburials. Friday, associated with the nobility, is considered an auspicious day for celebration.

L'histoire de Madagascar 🇲🇬 (Chapitre 3)

L’identité Malagasy🔥🫶

Toutes les multiples influences des différentes cultures ont laissé leur trace, et Madagascar a assimilé, intégré et métissé toutes ces apports afin de faire naitre : l'identité malagasy. Plusieurs royaumes ont commencé à émerger.

🧭 Royaumes de l'Ouest

A partir du XVe siècle, presque toute la côte occidentale est soumise à l'influence des royaumes Sakalava, les plus vastes de l'île et qui s'étendent du sud de Toliara jusqu'au Nord de Mahajanga. Les Sakalava sont divisés en deux groupes : la dynastie de Boeni au nord, et celle de Menabe au sud.


🧭 Royaumes de l'Est

Du XIII au XIXe siècle, le royaume Antenomoro a laissé son empreinte à Manakara et ses environs, de par les écritures, la médecine, l'organisation sociale et le contrôle du commerce. Plus au nord, au cours du XVIIIe siècle, le roi Ratsimilaho réussit à unifier les tribus rivales en une seule unité, connue sous le nom de Betsimisaraka. Les royaumes Betsimisaraka s'étendront de la baie d'Antogil jusqu'à Mananjary.


🧭 Royaumes du Sud

Au XVIe siècle, le roi Olombetsitoto est à l'origine des royaumes Mahafaly. Ils vivent en petits groupes sur un vaste plateau entre les fleuves Menarandra et Onilahy. Au XVIIe siècle, deux dynasties de l'Anosy, région de Taolagnaro, créent le royaume de Masikoro et étend son influence jusqu'au Nord de Toliara.

Les royaumes Betsileo a été fondé au début XVIIe siècle. Quatres grands royaumes se sont ainsi constitués, tantôt alliés tantôt hostiles : Arindrano, Lalangina, Isandra et Manandriana.

Le groupe le plus puissant des royaumes du centre était connu sous le nom de Merina. À la fin du XVIIIe siècle, un certain chef Ramboasalama monte sur le trône d'Ambohimanga et prend le nom accrocheur d'Andrianampoinimerinandriatsimitoviaminandriampanjaka, c'est-à-dire "l'Espoir de l'Imerina". Avec l'aide de marchands d'armes et de conseillers militaires européens, Andrianampoinimerina a réussi à unifier les différents peuples Merina en un puissant royaume qui a rapidement dominé une grande partie de Madagascar.

The Malagasy Identity🔥🫶

All the multiple influences of different cultures have left their mark, and Madagascar has assimilated, integrated and blended all these contributions to create : the Malagasy Identity. Several kingdoms began to emerge.


🧭 Western kingdoms

From the 15th century onwards, almost the entire west coast came under the influence of the Sakalava kingdoms, the largest on the island, stretching from south of Toliara to north of Mahajanga. The Sakalava are divided into two groups: the Boeni dynasty in the north, and the Menabe dynasty in the south.


🧭 Eastern kingdoms

From the 13th to the 19th century, the Antenomoro kingdom left its mark on Manakara and the surrounding area, through writing, medicine, social organization and control of trade. Further north, during the 18th century, King Ratsimilaho succeeded in unifying rival tribes into a single unit, known as the Betsimisaraka. The Betsimisaraka kingdoms extended from Antogil Bay to Mananjary.


🧭 Southern kingdoms

In the 16th century, King Olombetsitoto founded the Mahafaly kingdoms. They live in small groups on a vast plateau between the Menarandra and Onilahy rivers. In the 17th century, two dynasties from the Anosy, region of Taolagnaro, created the kingdom of Masikoro, extending its influence as far north as Toliara.

The Betsileo kingdoms were founded in the early 17th century. Four major kingdoms were formed, sometimes allied, sometimes hostile: Arindrano, Lalangina, Isandra and Manandriana.

The most powerful group in the central kingdoms was known as the Merina. At the end of the 18th century, a certain chief Ramboasalama ascended the throne of Ambohimanga and took the catchy name of Andrianampoinimerinandriatsimitoviaminandriampanjaka, i.e. "the Hope of the Imerina". With the help of European arms dealers and military advisors, Andrianampoinimerina succeeded in unifying the various Merina peoples into a powerful kingdom that soon dominated much of Madagascar.

Madagascar et l’Europe🇪🇺🤔

Marco Polo est le premier Européen à avoir mentionné l’existence d’une grande île rouge, et lui a donné le nom de Madagascar. Cette appellation tire son origine du mot « Malagasy », le nom utilisé par les peuples de l’île pour se référer à eux-mêmes.

C’est seulement en l’an 1500 qu’un navire Portugais sous le commandement de Diego Dias arrive sur l’île, faisant l’honneur d’être le premier Européen à poser le pied sur Madagascar. Il lui a donné le nom de « Ilha de Sao Lourenço », mais cela n’a duré que peu de temps.

Pendant le siècle qui suivait la découverte de l’île par les Européens, des Néerlandais et des Britanniques ont essayé d’établir des bases permanentes à différents points des côtes, mais tous ont dû faire machine arrière, repoussé par des habitants peu accueillants, qui les suspectaient d’être des marchands d’esclaves.

Au XVIIe siècle, des pirates venant du Royaume-Uni, France et des Etats-Unis ont réussi à faire de Madagascar une de leurs bases dans l’Océan Indien. Ils se sont installés sur l’île Sainte-Marie dans le but d’attaquer les navires qui se dirigeaient vers le Cap Bonne Espérance, et pour y enterrer d’importantes quantités de trésor. Madagascar devient alors un carrefour de tous les commerces et un lieu de multiples métissages.

Madagascar and Europe🇪🇺🤔

Marco Polo was the first European to mention the existence of a large red island, and gave it the name Madagascar. This name derives from the word "Malagasy", the name used by the island's peoples to refer to themselves.

It was only in 1500 that a Portuguese ship under the command of Diego Dias arrived on the island, doing the honor of being the first European to set foot on Madagascar. He gave it the name "Ilha de Sao Lourenço", but this lasted only a short time.

In the century following the discovery of the island by Europeans, Dutch and British settlers tried to establish permanent bases at various points along the coast, but all had to turn back, rebuffed by unwelcoming locals who suspected them of being slave traders.

In the 17th century, pirates from the UK, France and the USA succeeded in making Madagascar one of their bases in the Indian Ocean. They settled on the island of Sainte-Marie to attack ships bound for the Cape of Good Hope, and to bury large quantities of treasure. Madagascar then became a crossroads for all kinds of trade and a place of multiple interbreeding.

Qui sont les premiers colons ?🤔

Les premiers colons sont arrivés il y a 2000 ans des rives lointains de l'Indonésie et de la Malaisie.

Les premiers colons indonésiens ont colonisé l'île après avoir longé les côtes de l'Inde, de l'Arabie et de l'Afrique de l'Est, faisant du commerce au fur et à mesure, avant d'arriver à Madagascar.

Ces premiers colons ont apporté avec eux les cultures vivrières de l'Asie du Sud-Est et, aujourd'hui encore, les rizières de l'île ressemblent davantage au paysage de l'Asie du Sud-Est qu'à celui du continent africain, beaucoup plus proche.

La culture asiatique a été absorbée par le contact avec d'autres civilisations, Arabe et Africaine, arrivé sur l’île dans le but de faire du commerce le long de la côte Nord. Le mélange de ses différentes cultures a à son tour donné naissance aux différentes tribus que l'on trouve aujourd'hui à Madagascar.

Who were the first settlers?🤔

The first settlers arrived 2000 years ago from the distant shores of Indonesia and Malaysia.

The first Indonesian settlers colonized the island after travelling along the coasts of India, Arabia and East Africa, trading as they went, before arriving in Madagascar.

These early settlers brought with them the food crops of Southeast Asia and, even today, the island's rice paddies resemble the landscape of Southeast Asia more than that of the much closer African continent.

Asian culture was absorbed by contact with other civilizations, Arabic and African, who arrived on the island to trade along the northern coast. The blending of these different cultures in turn gave rise to the different tribes found in Madagascar today.
