A visit to the Old Skopje Bazaar is a unique experience because of the preserved spirit of the past complemented by modernity.
Skopje’s Old Bazaar as one of the largest preserved mixed Bazaar on the Balkan, despite its uniqueness and preserved architecture where eastern and western civilizations are crossing each other, is a vivid cultural area in Skopje where living heritage and tradition are communicating with contemporary artistic influences.
Two of the historical buildings part of the National gallery, located in the core of the Old Bazaar are „Daut Pashа Hamam“ and „Chifte Hamam“, both originally built as Turkish bath in the 15-en century, are historical monument of the Ottoman culture and an excellent example of the Islamic architecture, where Chifte Hamam is considered to be second largest built objects of turkish bath in Skopje during the Ottoman empire.
Their specific originate from ottoman styled architecture and system of different sized rooms covered with the domes, that became suitable aesthetic layers for display of art works at the Gallery for 80 years, including the permanent displayed art work from the collection of the National Gallery as well for the temporary art exhibitions.
Currently you can visit two temporary exhibition in the National Gallery in the Old Bazaar. The group exhibition of Austrian contemporary art since 1945 from the private collection that is available up to 15 of November in the Daut Pasha Hamam, and the retrospective exhibition of the Macedonian artist, sculptor and professor of arts Ibrahim Bedi, available up to 21 of November in the Chifte Hamam.
