The foot print in the rock is 117,000 years old. It is in the Rift Valley, near Lake Natron, Tanzania from where the first nomads emerged.

This nomad was walking away from the volcano behind the Maasai below after it erupted. The rains will have made the mud soft, then the ash from the volcano settled and hardened to preserve the evidence of their flight. These footprints were recently uncovered by the wind.

The Maasai call that mountain Ol Doinyo Lengai - the Mountain of God.

The foot on the right is mine. It's a perfect fit, though only 53 years old!

That foot will be stepping back into that footprint and leading a journey through the Rift Valley into the Serengeti to observe another type of migration, in early 2023.

Look out for more migration details coming soon...

From Here 2 Timbuktu is back on the road this May with a month's overland trip.
Starting in Bamako we are heading to Mauritania for a wee desert safari to Chinguetti, the old caravan town and seat of Islamic learning, the Timbuktu of Mauritania, where we will begin a camel trek across the mysterious geological phenomenon of the Rickat structure - also known as the Sahara Circle - to Ouadane.
We will then be hitching a ride from the desert to the coast on the largest train in the world that takes Iron Ore from deep in the desert to the port of Nouadibou.

From Mauritania we will go south to Senegal, through the Parc de Djoudj, one of the important sites in the world for migrating birds, and onto the island city of Saint Louis, the "Manhattan of West Africa" and the former administrative centre for colonial French West Africa. Then down to Dakar the most happening city of West Africa.

From Dakar we will cross back east and south across Senegal, Gambia, and onto Guinea. Through the Parc nationale of the upper Niger and returning into the west of Mali and back to Bamako.

You can join this trip in Bamako, Noaukchott or Dakar, for two to four weeks.

Please email [email protected] for dates and more details.

Fancy a ride?
Road Trip: Mali to Morocco March/April 2022

I'm venturing back across the Sahara on a road trip from Mali to Morocco. There are two places up for grabs. This trip may include a camel trek in Mauritania and/or a train ride from the desert to the coast.

Then in April I'll be doing a 2 week trip around Morocco, taking in some really cool places in Western Sahara, The Atlas ,mountains and the Rife valley, alongside covering the main citadels. There are a possible 6 places on this journey.

Both trips are flexible at the moment, will be built around the interest I get, and are part of an introduction into a new direction that Im taking for From Here 2 Timbuktu which I will be announcing soon.

Please message me here, or call me on the WhatsApp button (+223 75586274) or email [email protected] of you are interested.

Mauritania is literally the wild wild west, just of Africa, and a final frontier for adventure travellers being one of the least known and most remote places on earth. The Romans gave it its name, Berbers, Arabs and Africans its "black" and "white"  Maure culture.  What always strikes me here i...

America just warned all its citizens against travelling to the UK

Trump is simply making sense of a decade of Western governments' travel alerts and security advice.

African tourism has been decimated in the past ten years, driving economic collapse, aiding and abetting migration, rebellion, conflict and terrorism in Africa and EUROPE because of precisely this "something might happen one day somewhere" attitude to travel security in the non-western world.

If something might happen one day somewhere in Africa - a continent the size of USA, Europe, China, India, Argentina and New Zealand put together - it is 10 X more likely to happen in Europe and, with 300,000,000 guns on its streets, 1000s X more likely to happen in the USA.

If you want to stay safe from the random nutter get out of Europe and the USA and head for Africa!

The US State Department has issued a new terror alert warning Americans about travelling to Europe. The notice cited incidents linked to terrorism in France, Russia, Sweden and the UK as evidence Isis, al-Qaeda and affiliated groups could carry out terror attacks on the continent.

The 32 most dangerous countries in the world

Er... How many attacks in Europe over the past 3 years? The country where you have the biggest risk of getting shot? With 300,000,000 guns first prize goes to USA.
An American is more likely to killed by an American in America than to die abroad of any means whatsoever, even natural causes!
Why is it that journalists, politicians, insurance companies etc just cannot see the illogicality behind all this? Of course Libya and Syria and Yemen are dangerous, they are at war. But for the rest... it's bu****it politics.
Just been to Kenya. Hundreds and hundreds of miles of gorgeous coast empty of tourism. Why? Fear of pirates!! You'd be more likely to be killed by a shark. Guess where the tourists will go in Kenya - on safari, walking with lions!

One of the most dangerous countries to travel to in Africa? South Africa. But white people there.

The results of an inquest into the killing of 38 holiday makers in Sousse two years ago at the hands of terrorist Seifedine Rezgui has once more brought into sharp focus the dangers tourists can face when travelling to countries where there are potential threats of terrorism or unrest.
