Hello Everyone!!!

Today, we would like to introduce about Monwya known as “Little visited town hosting a number of unique sites” and also the famous tourist destinations in Myanmar.

Monywa is a town on the Chindwin river located in the dry zone of Central Burma West of Mandalay. Although the area is little visited by foreign tourists, the town and surroundings host a number of unique sites.

The valley surrounding Monywa is dotted with farms, glittering pagodas and small villages. The rural area is mainly involved in agriculture, with crops as beans, palm sugar and cotton. West of the Chindwin river is a large copper mine.

The markets in town sell locally produced food, fruit, handicrafts and textiles and are an excellent place to try some of the local dishes. Local people get around on motorbikes, bicycles and trishaws.

Monywa loosely translates to “Miss pancake town”. According to legend the town got its name after a Prince visited the village where he met a woman who fried pancakes. After he married her, the town was named Monywa.

Monywa is best known for two Buddhist monasteries located near each other South East of town.

The Thanboddhay temple is one of the most colorful an ornate temples in Burma. Every inch of the main building is covered with images of the Buddha. It is said that the temple houses a total of more than 580,000 images.

Nearby is the Maha Bodhi Ta Htaung monastery, known for its two enormous images of the Buddha on the hill. The 90 meter long reclining Buddha and the 116 meter high standing Buddha are among the largest in the world.

As other attractions near Monywa, The Ledi Kyaung monastery founded in 1886 is located in the North East of town. Built by one of Burma’s best known Buddhist scholars, it houses 806 stone slabs inscribed with Buddhist texts.

The 14th century Shwe Gu Ni Pagoda on Kyaukka road about 15 kilometers East of Monywa houses a large Buddha in the Bhumisparsha mudra, calling the Earth to witness. The image is covered with a thick layer of gold foil, applied by Buddhist devotees. Local people believe that one wish can be fulfilled at this temple by praying to the image.

Kyaukkar is a small village about 15 kilometers East of Monywa known for its lacquer ware products. Visitors can visit workshops where the black and gold lacquer ware is made. The Kyaukkar and Bagan lacquer ware are the most famous in the country. On Twin Taung hill near Budalin, North of Monywa lies an extinct volcano with a lake in its crater. The weeds from the waters are used to produce dietary supplements. After a climb to the top of the volcano visitors will have great views of the natural surroundings.

Hello Everyone!!!

Today, we would like to introduce about Bago known as “one of the best archeological zone” and also the famous tourist destinations in Myanmar.

Bago is a town little visited by tourists located about 90 kilometers North East of Yangon. The town can be visited as a day trip from Yangon. From within the country, the city is connected by bus and train. The town has a long and rich history. It is believed to have been founded by the Mon people in the 6th century during which days the city was known as Pegu.

Bago was the capital of the Mon Kingdom Hanthawaddy until halfway the 16th century, after which it became the capital of the Taungoo Kingdom until 1599.

When the Mon revolted against the Burmese in 1757, the city was completely destroyed by the armies of King Alaungpaya of the Konbaung dynasty. The city was rebuild, but did not regain its importance.

Due to its rich history, Bago houses many historical sites worth a visit including some of the most remarkable Buddhist monasteries in the country.

The Kanbawzathadi Golden Palace is a reconstruction of the palace built in the 16th century by King Bayinnaung. The ornate palace buildings give a good impression of the wealth and splendor of the second Burmese empire.

Near the palace is the Shwemawdaw Paya, at 116 meters the highest pagoda in Burma, visible from miles away. The 16th century Mahazedi Paya was built to enshrine a Buddha tooth relic. Behind the pagoda is a monastery that reminds of the Ananda pagoda in Bagan with its gilded sikhara spire.

One of Burma’s largest reclining Buddha images with a length of 55 meters, the Shwethalyaung Buddha was built over a thousand years ago. After the town of Bago was destroyed in 1757 the image was forgotten and became overgrown by thick jungle vegetation. It was rediscovered by chance during clearing works for railway construction. A series of murals on the back of the pedestal depicts the story of the image’s history.

Another impressive sight is the 15th century Kyaik Pun Pagoda, a few kilometers away from downtown Bago. Four 27 meter high images of the Buddha sit back to back against a central post.

06/03/2020

Hello Everyone!!!

Today, we would like to introduce about Mt. Popa known for its “Home of the 37 most important Nat spirits”, one of the famous tourist destinations in Myanmar.

Mount Popa, in Burma known as the home of the Nats is an extinct volcano with a monastery on top, named the Popa Taungkalat. It is the most important site in Burma for Nat pilgrimage.

Mount Popa, which means flower mountain rises about 1,500 meters above sea level. The mountain is located in Mount Popa National Park. Although the region is very dry, the mountain and surrounding area are green and look like an oasis in the desert.

As the volcanic soil is fertile and there are many streams in the area the mountain and National Park contain many beautiful flowers and other vegetation.

Getting to Mount Popa means a drive through the country side of Burma and a chance to see every day Burmese life in the small villages. Reaching the monastery on top of the mountain requires a climb of a stairway of 777 steps. The stairway to the top is covered, along the way to the top are shops selling various items including wooden handicrafts and local flowers. Along the stairway and in the monastery itself are monkeys everywhere that are always on the lookout for food.

On top of the stairs are two giant golden colored Chinthes, a lion like creature that guards the entrance to most temples in Burma. Once arrived in the monastery area, please take off shoes and socks as is usual in Burmese temples. In the temple area you will find a golden spiralled pagoda surrounded by many smaller pagodas.
From the top of the mountain you will have grea
t views of the surrounding area. If the weather is clear, you might be able to see as far as Bagan and the Irrawaddy river.
Mount Popa is the most important site in Burma for Nat pilgrimage. Nats have been worshipped on the mountain for at least a thousand years. The Nats are spirits who have been worshipped all over Burma for many centuries. They were probably worshipped before the arrival of Buddhism. Since then Buddhism and Nat worshipping have gradually merged over the centuries.

A shrine in the Popa Taungkalat monastery contains statues of the 37 most important Nats, all wearing very colorful clothing. Most of them were humans who suffered a violent death.

Ancient traditions and animist beliefs still play an important role in Burmese daily life. People come to the shrines to make offerings, including food. Many pilgrims from all over Burma visit Mount Popa to pay homage to the Nats, especially during the full moon festivals of Nayon and Nadaw.

Many legends are told about Mount Popa. As Mount Popa is the home of the 37 most venerated Nats, most deal with Nat spirits.

One legend tells that King Anawrahta who founded the Bagan empire in the 11th century ordered a runner named Byatta to fetch fresh flowers from Mount Popa every day. One day Byatta met an ogress named Mai Wunna who lived on the mountain and ate only flowers. Byatta fell in love with her and soon after the ogress gave birth to two sons in a cave on Mount Popa.

According to the legend Byatta was executed and Mai Wunna died of a broken heart. Both became Nats that still live on the mountain today. When the two sons were later executed, they too became Nats. At Taungbyone near Mandalay an annual festival is held where the two brothers are worshipped.

Mount Popa is located in Central Burma about 180 kilometers South West of Mandalay and 50 kilometers South East of Bagan and Nyaung U airport. From either place it takes around 1 to 1½ hours by car to get there.

Please be aware of the good news that Companies, Associations, Private Schools, Honeymoon Trips, Family-Friendly Trips and Customize Packages for Inbound/Outbound are offered with special services at the best prices!!!

Hello Everyone!!!

Today, we would like to introduce about Kyaikhtiyo known as “Golden Rock”, one of the famous tourist destinations in Myanmar.

The Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda, also called the Golden Rock is one of Burma’s most sacred Buddhist sites. A massive boulder on the edge of a cliff with a pagoda on top of it enshrining a hair of the Buddha is an important pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists.

The huge Golden Rock in the mountains North East of Yangon hanging over a steep cliff provides for an amazing sight. The rock that appears to be gold is actually a granite boulder that is covered with gold leaf applied to the rock by Buddhist devotees.

The boulder is about 7½ meters high and has a golden pagoda called the Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda or Kyaik Hti Yo Pagoda on top of it where the Buddha’s hair relic is enshrined.

The rock balances on the edge of a cliff and it appears like it can fall down in the valley below it at any moment. The boulder seems to hover over the ground, the contact area is very small.

The Golden Rock with the Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda is one of the most important places of pilgrimage for Buddhists in Burma. Every day many people come to the rock and pay their respect. Devotee pilgrims apply gold leaf to the rock. Only men can do this, as women are not allowed to touch the rock.

Since this is a sacred place, at the main entrance you have to take off your shoes and socks and walk barefoot to the Golden Rock. Two large lions or Chinthes guard the entrance to the temple grounds.

The Golden Rock with the Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda is located close to Kyaikto town, some 80 kilometers East of Bago and 160 kilometers North East of Yangon. Getting there requires quite a bit of effort. Although the trip is an adventure in itself, it takes considerable time and part of the journey can be uncomfortable.

The first leg of the journey is taking a bus or private taxi from either Yangon or Bago to Kinpun village at the base of the mountain where the Golden Rock is on. From the base camp in Kinpun travellers make a ride in the back of an open truck that is fitted with benches. The ride up on the winding roads on the forested mountains over 1,000 meters above sea level takes around 30 minutes to Ya Thay Taung.

From here it is about one hour walk to the Golden Rock along a road with souvenir shops. Bring plenty of water for the climb. At the entrance gate of the temple complex you have to take off your shoes and socks and continue the walk barefoot. Bring a bag to carry them with you. If you don’t feel like walking you care hire porters to carry you up to the Kyaikhtiyo Golden Pagoda in a kind of bamboo sedan chair. Negotiate a price before leaving and pay at the end of the return trip.

Please be aware of the good news that Companies, Associations, Private Schools, Honeymoon Trips, Family-Friendly Trips and Customize Packages for Inbound/Outbound are offered with special services at the best prices!!!

Hello Everyone!!!

Today, we would like to introduce about Ngapali Beach known for its “Idyllic Beach Resort on the Bay of Bengal”, one of the famous tourist destinations in Myanmar.

One of South East Asia’s largely undiscovered beach resorts, Ngapali is an idyllic, charming place near the town of Thandwe in Rakhine state, Western Burma. Located on the Bay of Bengal is a several kilometers long sandy beach lined with palm trees and the small boats of local fishermen.

Possibly the best beach in Burma, Ngapali is a great place to enjoy swimming in the warm and clear waters or sunbathing while watching local fishermen bring their catch to shore. Tourists relax on beach chairs, shade is provided by reed parasols and palm trees. Burmese ladies walking the beach offer a variety of local fruits.

Several small family run beach shack restaurants serve fresh seafood. Enjoy dinner on the beach while watching the beautiful sunset over the Bay of Bengal. Nearby are several fishermen villages where life is largely the same it has been for generations.

Accommodation varies from very basic to high end. Construction of larger hotels is underway. The best time to visit Ngapali beach is during the dry season from November until April.

Besides sun bathing and swimming visitors can go snorkeling admiring the underwater world with lots of tropical colorful fish. Trips to nearby small islands can be booked at most hotels and shops. Alternatively, negotiate directly with the boat owner to get a better price.

The area around Ngapali is very rural and traditional. Exploring the local fishermen villages seems like a step back in time for Westerners. Local traffic largely consists of bicycles and ox drawn carts. Burmese women cover their faces with thanaka, a yellowish white cosmetic. A good way to get around independently is on a bicycle, offered for rent at several shops.

Nearby is the town of Thandwe with its seaport and local market, where visitors can shop for locally made handicrafts and try some typical Burmese food.

Ngapali beach is located a few kilometers from the town of Thandwe in Rakhine state, Western Burma. The easiest way to get there is by air to Thandwe airport, a few kilometers North of Ngapali beach. Several domestic airlines offer direct flights from Yangon. The number of flights varies per season. A direct flight from Yangon takes
about 50 minutes.

Hello Everyone!!!

Today, we would like to introduce about Bagan known for its “One of the Asia’s most signigicant historical sites”, one of the famous tourist destinations in Myanmar.

Bagan in Burma is one of the most significant archaeological sites of South East Asia. In spite of this, it is still relatively unknown because of the isolation the country has been in for decades.

Bagan is an ancient city that was the capital of the prosperous Bagan empire that controlled most of present day Burma. At the height of empire’s power between the 11th and 13th century more than 10,000 temples and pagodas were built.

Today, about 2,200 monuments remain in various states of repair, which makes Bagan one of the most dense concentrations of temples and pagodas in the world.

The scale of Bagan can be overwhelming with its thousands of monuments as far as the eye can see. Some are very well maintained and have been restored, while others are neglected and overgrown with vegetation.

Bagan is an excellent site to see a number of ancient monuments built in various architectural styles. The site also shows the development in architecture and design over the course of several centuries. Since many Kings wanted to leave a legacy for future generations to see, impressive monuments were erected in evolving styles and shapes.

Impressive on the outside, the interior of some of the well preserved temples matches the exterior. While some of the temples have beautiful murals and frescoes, others have magnificent Buddha images, like the Ananda temple that has four 9.5 meter high teak standing Buddha images representing the four previous Buddhas.

The city of Bagan was surrounded by walls that were built around the start of the 11th century. There used to be 12 gates, one for each sign of the Zodiac. Today only a small section of the walls remain. Only one of the original gates, the Tharabha gate is left.

Recognizing its importance, UNESCO has placed the Bagan archaeological zone, an area of about 104 km2 on its tentative list for consideration as a future World Heritage Site.

In 1975 a large earthquake hit Bagan, seriously damaging many of its temples. During the 1990’s the Burmese government had many of the damaged temples and pagodas restored. Unfortunately, the renovations were not done with the original architectural concepts in mind.

Bagan is located in the plains of central Burma (or Myanmar with its new name) on the Eastern bank of the Irrawaddy river 180 kilometers South West of Mandalay and about 600 kilometers North West of Yangon. Bagan can be reached by air, train, boat, bus and car.
