The Mongolian Camel Festival is a spectacular winter event that attracts numerous tourists to Uvurkhangai aimag, Mongolia.

This year, the "Camel Festival - 2023" was organized in Arvaikheer soum of the Uvurkhangai aimag on December 1, 2023, with an aim to instill pride among Mongolians in the camel, the jewel of Mongolian nomadic heritage, enhance the benefits derived from camels, foster awareness among the younger Mongolian generation about their unique heritage, and train the next generation of true camel herders.

After a hiatus of two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Camel Festival made a triumphant return, drawing participation from approximately 200 camel herders from Uvurkhangai, Umnogobi, Dundgobi, Bayankhongor and Gobi-Altai aimags, each bringing their own marvelous friend.

Visiting Khuvsgul Province, Mongolia in winter offers a unique and enchanting experience, providing a different perspective of the landscape and a range of activities that are distinct to the winter season. Here are some reasons why you might consider visiting Khuvsgul in winter:

Frozen Lake Khuvsgul:
The lake freezes over in winter, creating a vast, snow-covered expanse. The frozen lake is a stunning sight and allows for activities such as ice skating and ice fishing.

Reindeer Sledding:
In the winter months, you may have the opportunity to experience traditional reindeer sledding, a unique and culturally rich activity offered by the local Tsaatan people.

Northern Lights:
Khuvsgul is located in a region where you might have the chance to witness the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) during the winter months. The clear, crisp winter nights enhance the chances of seeing this natural phenomenon.

Less Crowded:
Compared to the peak tourist season in the warmer months, winter tends to be less crowded. This means you can enjoy the serene beauty of the area with fewer tourists and a more peaceful atmosphere.

Cultural Experience:
Winter is a time when you can experience the unique winter traditions and customs of the local people, including their ways of dealing with the harsh weather conditions.

Photography Opportunities:
The winter landscape with its snow-covered mountains, frozen lake, and clear skies provides excellent opportunities for photography. The pristine beauty of the surroundings can be truly captivating.
