👀 The "Adrar" exhibition by French illustrator Joël Alessandra is available... until this Saturday, November 18!

🇫🇷 Joël Alessandra was born in Marseille in 1967 and graduated from the Boulle school in interior architecture.

🖌 Author/illustrator of comic books and travel sketchbooks, for over 30 years, he has drawn inspiration from his journeys around the world, particularly in Africa, for his book projects and engagements with French Institutes, Alliances Françaises, and refugee camps.

🐪 The 28 watercolors comprising the Adrar exhibition are the result of a creative residency at the French Institute of Mauritania in January 2023.

“My journey in Mauritania, from Dakhla to Nouadibou by hitchhiking, exploring the Mauritanian Sahara region, and finally concluding in Nouakchott, was nothing short of extraordinary.

Since my childhood, I had dreamt of the Sahara, captivated by its enchanting allure and the myriad of stories that surround it. I ventured into the unknown, not speaking the language, little did I know that it would profoundly touch my soul.

This experience was truly transformative, thanks to the incredible people I met, the breathtaking landscapes, the nomadic culture, the practice of Islam, and everything I unearthed about myself.

A self-taught artist, Mona Hajjar chose painting as a means to freely express her emotions from her teenage years, drawing inspiration from Mauritania, her daily surroundings for many years. Her main muse comprises the objects and life scenes that define the uniqueness of the world around her.

In this exhibition, she seeks to reveal the vibrant facets of life and color that often go unnoticed, concealed within the blind spots of our perception.

By offering unique perspectives through her framing, she illuminates the unusual details of Mauritanian daily life.

There is a statue called the "Mauritanian Woman," also referred to as the "Mauresque Woman”, which was erected in front of the Palace of Tokyo and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Paris in 1937. This sculpture was created by the French artist Anna Kinko after her visit to Mauritania.
