Places to Visit: The Three Crosses

The monument shows three crosses and can be found metres away from a small Chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Light. As you can see from the photos, the Three Crosses stand of pedestals and are built within a wall. Between two of the crosses, there’s a space for people to place candles and flowers while praying on site.

Places to Visit – La Ruota for unwanted babies

When a baby was placed in this contraption, a bell would ring on the inside, thus alerting everyone that a baby had just been deposited.

The Ruota was used between 1372 till approximately 1615.

❤️ 🇲🇹

La Ruota, an Italian word meaning “The Wheel”, was a small wooden window where unwanted babies were deposited from one side (outside) and then picked up from the inside of the building. The process was meant to be an ano...

Places To Visit: Citta Vittoriosa

Birgu was once the central city in Malta and had a long military and maritime activities history. Its position within the Grand harbour was critical, and several military leaders wanted to take over the city. Therefore, the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and Aragonese all shaped and developed Birgu.

It features a unique architectural style and four bomb-proof gun emplacements (to protect its canons). It was also meant to serve as a lookout, and one can see quite clearly the marks left on the gate sustained by musket “bullets” during enemy attacks.

This gate, spread over four floors, was built in 1675 by the Order of St. John as part of the Cottonera Lines to serve as its main gate for the Eastern Provinces. It is still intact and complete as originally built. It f...

Places to visit: Addolorata Cemetery

This multi-faith cemetery is Malta’s largest. Various private chapels can be found along the many passageways. These chapels used to be owned by Malta’s wealthiest families and have been passed on or bought by other families throughout the years. Although you will never officially find one for sale, these chapels reportedly carry price tags of well over €100,000.

A cemetery is never a happy place to go to. However, the Addolorata Cemetary in Paola, built between 1862 and 1868, offers architectural gems and a glimpse at the past.

This is used for different events such as national exhibitions, conferences, fashion shows, photoshoots, and tv filming.

This is where you can see artefacts dating back to 5900 – 2500 BC, amongst others. Sought-after items include the Sleeping Lady, which, along with other items, was excavated from Malta’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. Repr...

Places to Visit : Popeye Village
A team of 165 people constructed the village of nineteen wooden buildings. Hundreds of logs and several thousand wooden planks were imported from the Netherlands, while wood shingles used in the construction of the rooftops were imported from Canada.

This village was built in the last 6 months of 1979 to serve as a movie set of the 1980 live-action musical feature film Popeye, produced by Paramount and Walt Disney, starring Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall.

7 – Seashells House
While wandering the streets of Hal-Ghaxaq you might come across a curious façade decorated with Sea Shells! It seems that this started as a hobby back in 1898. Mr Indri Dimech started collecting seashells from the local and foreign beaches he visited. One fine day he started the strange project on the façade of the place, which back then served as a bar. The house became a milestone for locals and visitors as the years passed.

5: Lascaris War Rooms
This project was classified as Top-Secret during World War two. These secret underground rooms, which were used as war headquarters during WW2, are still intact.
Back in 1940, a year after WW2 broke out, the British decided to make use of a series of tunnels which were located underneath the Upper Barrakka Gardens. The Knights had originally dug the tunnels and used them to house their slaves. The British expanded the network of tunnels to form a complex, made up of small and big rooms from which they could command their forces. The project was finished in the first quarter of 1943 and was carried out in full secrecy. The complex featured dedicated rooms from which Commanders and Generals conducted the war in the Mediterranean area and the island’s defences.

4: The Santa Marija Tower on Comino

A story of Pirates, Corsairs, Knights and Spies...and movies. This tower has seen it all! The Santa Marija Tower, standing some 80 metres above sea level, dominates the small island of Comino.

Back in 1416, the Maltese living in the Mellieha area had formally asked their king, to build a tower to warn about, and defend them from, the frequent attacks and savage raids by Turks, pirates and corsairs. The King placed a tax on imported wine to raise money for the tower but never kept his promise and the tower was not built.

3: Capuchin Crypt Floriana
This place is testimony to a macabre custom which used to be practised by the Capuchin friars within this monastery. Back in 1725, the friars dug a crypt beneath this convent. Within its walls, they had 20 niches to display dead friars as a final farewell. When a friar died, they would disembowel the co**se and place it in a heated chamber where it would eventually dry out. The co**se would then be chained, upright, in one of the niches and left there to decay. When, by time, the mummy collapsed, they would gather the bones and nail them on the walls of the crypt as decoration.

Valletta's Strait Street is easily the most famous street in Malta. Known as Strada Stretta in Maltese, the street was the pinnacle of nightlife amongst American and British military men and Maltese frequenters between the 19th and mid-20th century.
Strait Street became a hub in which English, Italian, and Maltese could co-exist.

This level of interaction with soldiers meant that many more Maltese learnt the English language – from barmen to the Maltese ladies who pined after the foreign sailors.

Strait Street also became a notable platform for live music, especially jazz.

The fun was hardly innocent, as one might imagine.

Indeed, Strait Street’s reputation stems from its sheer contrast to the Catholic Malta that encased it, with its drunkenness, rowdiness, prostitution, and even cross-dressing being the nightly routine. It’s no wonder that the street was known as the ‘The Gut’ amongst its English visitors.

Does Strait Street exist today? Yes, and it’s just as vibrant as it ever was! Nowadays the popular area still hosts bars, live music, and even festivals. We’re pretty sure that there’s less debauchery, though.

Malta is the quintessential Mediterranean culture made up of every major maritime power that has sailed that sea. Each leaving behind a mark; some larger, some smaller. In a tiny, dense urban sprawl carved into thick limestone, Malta reveals itself as a strategic David amongst the sea’s Goliaths.

The Chapel of Bones / Nibbia Chapel

The Nibbia Chapel was a Roman Catholic chapel in Valletta, Malta, which was dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy. It was originally built in 1619 by Fra Giorgio Nibbia, a knight of the Order of St. John, and it was located near a cemetery where deceased patients from the nearby Sacra Infermeria were buried.

The chapel was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1731. In 1852 its crypt was decorated with skeletal human remains taken from the adjacent cemetery, giving rise to the name Chapel of Bones (Maltese: Il-Kappella tal-Għadam).

The chapel was heavily damaged by aerial bombardment in 1941, and its ruins were subsequently demolished, leaving only some foundations on the site. However, the crypt might still survive intact.

Happy Easter!!

Today all Church bells in Malta will be celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. Mid-morning festive processions with the statue of the Risen Christ will mark this day in a number of villages. At some points of such processions, the way is cleared and the statue-bearers take a run while carrying the Risen Christ triumphantly.

Easter day is traditionally celebrated with a special family lunch. It is also a time to visit relatives and friends, exchanging good wishes and small presents. It’s also tradition to give children chocolate-coated easter eggs and a ‘figolla’.

Today is Good Friday

Every year on Good Friday, Christians around the world commemorate the death of Jesus Christ. His resurrection three days later is the Church’s greatest feast and, for believers, the defining moment of their faith. For the Maltese, no other event captures the imagination quite as vividly as the annual Good Friday procession.

Good Friday processions see the participation of hundreds of people in an ever growing number of towns and villages.

This is where you can witness such a procession today, and the approximate time:

• Żebbuġ – 17:30h
• Mosta – 17:30h
• Birgu (Vittoriosa) – 17:30h
• Isla (Senglea) – 17:30h
• Valletta – 18:00h
• Bormla (Cospicua) – 17:30h
• Luqa – 17:30h
• Naxxar – 17:30h
• Paola – 17:30h
• Qormi (San Ġorġ parish) – 17:30h
• Rabat – 18:00h

Xlejli Tower

Xlejli Tower also known as Bettina Tower, is a tower in Gudja, Malta. The age of the tower is not known, and it could date back to the Roman or medieval periods, or possibly a later reconstruction.

Its date of construction is not known, but it might have Roman origins. According to Louis de Boisgelin, the historian of the Order of St. John, an urn full of Roman copper medals was found at the tower.

The tower also has a round shape, similar to other Punic-Roman towers in Malta. It is believed that the remains of an old and round building are those of a watchtower.

The oldest reference to the tower dates back to 1570, when it was described as a lookout tower built in the 12th or 13th century. The tower was almost definitely built as a watchtower, since it has views of the southern part of Malta.
