🌊🌲 Chadwick Lakes Trail and Ċirkewwa Marine Park joined forces on behalf of Nature Trust - FEE Malta to participate in the 𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫, and 𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, on prospective careers for students at the ‘𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬’, MCAST🔬
Students across different levels had the opportunity to ask questions about the 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 carried out both from the 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 aspect , exciting 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 within our industry, and interact with industry experts to 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬.

Following the interventions to remove alien species, the indigenous species populating the valley bed are once more beginning to thrive. However, this regeneration process is severely impacted by human activity upon the valley bed, irrespective of whether such activity involves foot or vehicular traffic. Whilst the impact of foot traffic might not appear to be as extensive to the naked eye as vehicle tracks, significant impact nevertheless results, both with respect to biodiversity as well as to the valley’s function in contributing to groundwater recharge. 💧🌱☀️

For visitors enjoying the site on foot, a marked walking trail has been established for the benefit and safety of the general public. Access to the valley should be available for the purposes of public enjoyment and in order to foster and facilitate a much needed connection to nature whilst also safeguarding the valley and surrounding agricultural fields. Keeping to the clearly marked pathway and refraining from straying into the valley bed or on private agricultural land allows visitors to interact with the valley in a way which is respectful of its ecological importance.

Nature Trust - FEE Malta and the Energy & Water Agency would like to remind the public that Chadwick Lakes Trail is legally protected under the Flora, Fauna and Natural Habitats Protection Regulation (S.L. 549.44). In recognition of the ecological and scientific importance of the valley system, the site was declared as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) of National Importance, which was made subject to a Protection Notice by means of Government Notice 34 of 2021.

The attention of the general public is drawn specifically to Section D of said notice, which outlines activities that are prohibited in the valley. The general public is hereby reminded of the protected status of the valley’s flora and fauna, and that the picking and uprooting of native flora and fauna found therein constitutes a criminal offence.

Together, we planted 70 young oak trees at Chadwick Lakes, fostering growth in both our careers and our environment! 🌳🌟

Nature Trust - FEE Malta has been busy clearing the valley bed from the Great Reed (Arundo donax / Qasba l-Kbira), a very problematic invasive alien plant species (IAPS) in all our freshwater ecosystems. A total of 100 square meters were cleared with over 700+ Kgs of Reeds and rhizomes removed.

This could not have been achieved without a lot of help from a number of dedicated interns and students from the MCAST Institute Of Applied Sciences carrying out their work placement with us. Meanwhile, a series of indigenous trees and shrubs of the native genotype have been propagated to afforest this section of IAPS intervention.
