It's not the right season yet for sea salt harvesting workshops... But we still managed to give these lovely guests a taste of what it feels like!

🌞 Key words for this busy mid-March week: exciting , excellent local , but most importantly in Malta’s rural areas!

👩‍🍳 During one of the most competitive team events ever, 3 groups challenged each other by making the typical Maltese street-food: - from scratch! After baking, the verdict was given by our 'pastizzi specialists' Ġulinu and Nancy... and the black team won! 🥇

At the end of the day the guests compared their creations with the pastizzi baked by the pastizzi master himself - Ġulinu 🤤

Thanks to MYeventplanner for entrusting us once again with a challenging event and a big well done to the all the participants!

Back in May 2022, the family at Tan-Nixxiegħa Olive Grove had the pleasure of hosting some members from USTOA (United States Tour Operators Association). This is a professional, voluntary trade association which aims to promote integrity within the tour operator industry.

Since is one of the principles that drives us in our daily activities, it was a pleasure to collaborate with Malta Rural Tours and bring in our members to introduce them to the community and share our values with like-minded people from the other side of the world!

🇮🇹 During their study trip to Malta, fourteen students from the UNISG - Università degli Studi di Scienze Gastronomiche in📍Piemonte (Italy) spent a week learning about Food and Rural Tourism in the Maltese Islands.

🧑‍🌾 They entrusted us with the organisation of their 'tasty' journey to discover Malta's hidden gems. Thanks to the Merill Rural Network they met several farmers, breeders, artisans' workshops. We also got the students in touch with professionals from across the board, including top chefs, experts in the field and academics, together with a number of specialised NGOs. We are always glad to create meaningful and lasting moments of exchange between our rural community and guests from around the world.

😊 Moreover, it is always a pleasure for us to share our fundamental values with young generations, as the future is up to them!

We are literally addicted to 🧀

We love to try it with different products - honey, jams, EVOOs... each pairing is able to reveal a different nuance of this fantastic .

Who's not Maltese may not know this traditional product. Fresh, dried, peppered... it may come in different ways, but the classic round shape makes it very recognizable. Many are trying to mimic the original product, but the real ġbejna is just the one made from sheep's raw milk and that's the one we serve during our experiences.

Tasting it at home is already great, but doing it at the while chatting with the breeder who has produced it is much more amazing and gives it a memorable taste 😜

Good morning from one of the most idyllic rural settings on the Maltese Islands 🌳🇲🇹

We feel so blessed that we’re able to work at such breathtaking spots! 😍

This orchard belongs to a family who got involved in rural tourism a long time ago... we sometimes organise corporate RuralCSR activities here, to help the farmer with some upkeep, or simply an ecotour spending some relaxing time enjoying the sunset. 🍷

🇲🇹 In Malta, there are few families continuing the tradition of sea salt harvesting, which dates back to Phoenician times. One of these is the Darmanin families, whose salt pans are located in Marsaskala.

Żaren has been doing this job since he was 10 years old. Now in his '80s, he doesn't have the intention to stop and you'll see him zipping around the salt pans more energetic than a 20-year-old... stopping him to have a chat is quite impossible! It will be easier to talk with Mario, who defines his father as a workaholic 😁 He will be eager to tell you his family's story while providing more insight about sea salt!

Maltese summer is not exactly the best time to experience the rural side of our country... it's definitely too hot. However, there's a that is carried out during the warmest months of the year and that's sea salt harvesting! 🧂

Visit a fascinating location from the Roman period to get to know this tradition, learn about sea salt, interact with the harvesters and do some harvesting of your own 💙

Yesterday, we were at the 📍 Falzon Bakery - Rabat... just behind Basilica of St. Paul!

🍞 These guys are ready to provide you with some of the best loaves of bread you can find on the Islands, including the 🇲🇹 Maltese .

Many visitors don't miss the chance to experience the bakery in a more immersive way: being part of the Merill Rural Network, we helped this bakery to get into rural tourism itineraries and we aim to continue supporting them as best as we can! We love to refer to the - Extra Virgin Olive Oil - as the of the Mediterranean Diet. Considering the several scientifically-proven benefits that it presents us with, it shouldn't be seen just as a condiment but as one of the main protagonists of our diets!

In Malta, we're very good at forgetting this and substituting it with a cheaper option: butter, or even the unhealthy margarine. Many people also fall for low-quality "olive oil".

That's why EVOO is often given so much attention during our . Our rural guides are trained to deliver interesting and fun degustation sessions, throwing in some nuggets of wisdom to help you choose wisely when sourcing !
