MIEMA - Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency MIEMA

The Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) is Malta's first energy agency, set up in June 2007, with the support of the IEE Programme and a wide array of public institutions including the Ministry for Tourism & Culture, the Ministry for Rural Affairs & the Environment, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Small Business and the Self Employed in the Ministry for Competitiveness and Communi

cations, Local Councils, the Malta Resources Authority and the University of Malta. Its aims are in line with those of other IEE supported Energy Agencies and as such it aims to be a protagonist of the European effort towards a more intelligent use of energy resources; promoting awareness initiatives and contributing to define incisive and targeted proposals and policies of intervention, in order to optimize the use of conventional energy resources and to develop renewable sources

The Agency’s activities are initially focused on local needs, such as the energy practices of the tourism industry, while building on local success stories like that of the use of bio fuels. MIEMA is also planning to co-ordinate and provide training to installers of photo-voltaic and similar intelligent energy systems and to organize seminars and information days. It intends to foster and conduct research in the field, through collaboration with the University of Malta, and to disseminate information and raise awareness on the importance of managing energy. This sort of synergistic networking will ensure the success of the Agency and will be another step in ensuring that Malta reaches its target commitments for the use of greener energy sources. Activities programmed for the next three years include:
Energy planning
Green certificates
Energy certification of buildings
Energy saving on public lighting
Studies to address the energy needs of industrial parks and micro-enterprises
Studies to address the energy needs of tourism establishments
Promotion of the use of biofuels and related projects (e.g., marine algae project)
Dissemination of information about renewables at local and national levels

Our ambassador Berne are supporting Friends of the Earth Malta with the launch of their creative zine 'Imagining a Fossil Free Malta', which Berne contributed to.

Join us today Thursday 9th January at 7pm at Storeroom Ta' Xbiex! The zine brings together the hopeful visions by artists, writers, poets, musicians, children and other creatives, showing how they imagine a fossil free future for Malta.

Some highlights from our and crossCert Project stakeholder engagement event "Energy transition: the role of the building sector in Malta" held on the 18th October 2024.

The event included a site visit at Valletta Design Cluster as a best practice of building energy renovation followed by a roundtable at The Embassy Valletta Hotel and part of MIEMA's activities the crossCert project, funded under H2020.

Hailey Ciantar is a passionate and dedicated Maltese climate activist who has made significant strides in environmental advocacy from a young age. Inspired by the documentary Before the Flood, she co-founded Malta's first-ever Green Council and pursued a law degree to influence environmental policy. At 18, she was appointed by the European Commission as an EU Bioeconomy Youth Ambassador. In this capacity, she translated a children's book on bioeconomy into Maltese, simplifying complex concepts for younger generations and highlighting the importance of sustainability education. She also launched the world’s first podcast dedicated to bioeconomy, Bioeconomy Matters, which highlights the presence of bioeconomy in various sectors and reaches audiences globally.

Hailey's commitment to climate action and sustainability is recognised internationally, and she continues to inspire through her speaking engagements and her role as an EU Climate Pact Ambassador. Her belief in the power of collective action drives her ongoing work to create lasting change for our planet.

Thank you to all the speakers, ambassadors and participants that were with us last Monday 23rd September for the Cities Go Climate Neutral multiplier event and workshop: Digital Tools for City Decarbonisation.

The event brought together around 30 key stakeholders from local and regional authorities, EU Climate Pact Ambassadors, NGOs, academia and citizens, and focused on different tools and best practices that can be applied to make Maltese and European cities more sustainable.
