Public Holiday:
Labour Day 01st of May
The First of May was celebrated for the first time as a public holiday in Mauritius in May 1950, thanks largely to the efforts of Guy Rozemont, Dr. Maurice Curé, Pandit Sahadeo and Emmanuel Anquetil. However, it should also be noted that it was commemorated the first time on 1st May 1938 or 84 years ago at Champs de Mars by Curé and his allies. Therefore, Labour Day is of special significance for Mauritian workers who for many years have struggled for their social, political and economic rights.
On that day, the Segatours' office will be manned by a skeleton staff but operations will function normally.

Public Holiday: Ugadi
In Mauritius, Ugadi, the Telegu New Year festival, is celebrated by the Telegu residents of the country. The exact date of the holiday varies, as it is based on astrological observances, and so this year it will be on Tuesday 09th April 2024.
Ugadi is a time to prepare great family meals, make many prayers, attend cultural events, and give out sweets to friends and family. As the beginning of a new year, it is also a time to reflect on one’s past and make commitments to live better in the future.

The legend of Ugadi says that Brahma, held to be the god of all the universe, came into existence on this day. It is also believed to be the death-date of Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu. The death of Krishna is held as the beginning of a new era and as the beginning of the Salivahana Empire in India back in A.D. 78.

There are many religious customs attached to Ugadi, including bathing one’s head in coconut oil and adorning one’s home with mango leaves that hail from India. But local Mauritian music, food, and culture is now also a part of the celebration of Ugadi in Mauritius. Many will also attend temples or follow mantras repeated on TV.
On that day, the Segatours' office will be manned by a skeleton staff, but operations will function normally.

Public Holiday: National Day on 12th of March

Independence Day Mauritius is celebrated every year on March 12 in Mauritius. This day celebrates the island country of Mauritius and its people, culture, and traditions on the anniversary of the day that Mauritius became an independent state within the Commonwealth.
On that day the Segatours’ office will be manned by a skeleton staff but operations will function normally.
We are pleased to share with you a local song that depicts our cosmopolitanism even in our music. Enjoy!

Public Holiday on 08th March 2023
Maha Shivaratree Pilgrimage
Maha Shivaratree is celebrated each year on the 13th night and 14th day of the 11th month of the Hindu Calendar. That usually comes in February or March on the Gregorian Calendar.

The main Maha Shivaratree event in Mauritius takes place at Lake Ganga Talao, located in the centre of the island. Ever since holy water from the Ganges River of India was poured into this lake back in 1972, it too has become a major Hindu holy site.

Large crowds of devout Hindus set out on pilgrimage to the lake on Maha Shivaratree. They dress in full white and carry large bamboo-and-paper depictions of various Hindu gods and virtues on their shoulders. At the lake shore, they pray, present offerings at one of the numerous lakeside shrines, and gather holy water from the lake into vessels.

Once back at home again, devotees pour out the holy lake water over a statue of Shiva that they have in or near their home.
On that special day, Segatours will be manned by a skeleton staff at the office but operations will function as normal.

Cyclone Eleanor Warning No. 3 since 4.10 am today

A cyclone warning class III is in force in Mauritius.

Eighth cyclone bulletin for Mauritius issued at 0410 hours on Thursday 22 February 2024.

Over the past hours, the severe tropical storm Eleanor has shown signs of further intensification. The belt of strong winds is within 50 kilometres of its centre, with mean wind estimated to be around 100 km/h and gusts of the order 125 km/h.

At 0400 hours, severe tropical storm Eleanor was centered at about 200 km almost to the north-east of Mauritius near latitude 18.6 degrees south and longitude 58.8 degrees east. Eleanor is moving in a general south-south-west direction at a speed of about 20 km/h.

On this trajectory Eleanor is dangerously approaching Mauritius and it represents a direct threat. The radius of strong winds is likely to pass very close to the eastern coast of Mauritius this afternoon.

The public in Mauritius is advised to complete and maintain all precautions and stay in a safe place.

Active clouds associated with Eleanor will continue to influence weather over the island.
The weather will be overcast with intermittent rain, moderate to heavy at times and it is expected to deteriorate rapidly with widespread heavy rainfall together with thunderstorms as from the morning. These heavy rainfall will cause water accumulations and flooding in several places.

The public is strictly advised to:
1. remain in safe places; and
2. avoid places prone to water accumulation, river banks and other water courses which may be flooded and certain mountain slopes prone to landslide.

Wind will initially blow from the south-east at a speed of about 40 km/h with gusts reaching 110 km/h by mid-day, strengthening to exceed 120km/h.

Sea will become high with swells beyond the reefs and wave height will be of the order of 6 to 8 metres. Storm surge is likely to cause coastal inundation in the northern, eastern and southern low-lying areas. It is strictly advised not to go at sea and to avoid venturing along beaches.

Rest assured our operations is in permanent contact with in resort guests and following up on any changes in transfers and accommodation in case of flight disruptions.

Public Holiday: Chinese Spring Festival celebration on Saturday 10 February 2024
The greatest concentration of Chinese-Mauritians is in the city of Port Louis, but they live all over the island and even those not of Chinese descent get involved in the Chinese New Year celebrations.

The exact date of Chinese New Year is based on the Chinese Calendar, and it changes every year on the Gregorian Calendar, but it will always come sometime in January or February.

Chinese New Year is a celebration of spring, and the beauty of Mauritius’ white sand beaches, turquoise blue waters, and dramatic island contours and greenery are in full display this time of year.

Many families will get together to celebrate and feast on both Mauritian and Chinese cuisine. Some will get costumed and perform the traditional Lion Dance. Others will set off firecrackers, which was traditionally done to “drive away evil spirits”.

Everyone will reflect on the old year and plan for the new. Many will make new year resolutions, and it’s not uncommon for people to pay special attention to “bad and good luck” during Chinese New Year, to avoid a full 12 months of bad luck in the Chinese year ahead.
We wish you all a KUNG CHEE FAT CHOY 恭喜发财 !!!

1st of February public holiday in Mauritius - celebration the Abolition of Slavery

The Abolition of Slavery in Mauritius, also known as Abolition Day and observed annually on February 1, commemorates the abolition of slavery in the nation. The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, helmed by the British parliament, took effect a year later, with most British colonies freeing enslaved Africans spanning the Caribbean and South Africa. In 1835, Mauritius followed suit, officially becoming the last British colony to gain freedom. Planters were compensated with two million pounds sterling for their slave loss. Mauritius (colonized by the Netherlands), France, and Great Britain became independent in 1968.
Festivities and concerts are taking place in various parts of the island but mainly in the south-west where the majority of slaves were captured. Segatours is operating with a skeleton staff in the office today. The operations team is fully operational.
