🌊 Happy World Oceans Day 2024! 🌊
World Oceans Day, initiated at the Rio Summit in 1992, stands as a powerful reminder of the critical importance of sustainable ocean management and resource use. Every June 8th, people around the globe unite to take decisive actions towards healthier oceans. This year's theme, "Awaken New Depths," calls us to dive into innovative solutions for ocean conservation.
In island nations like Mauritius and Seychelles, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is steadfast in its commitment to fostering a sustainable Blue Economy. Notably, the UNDP collaborates with global donors, local authorities, and NGOs to protect and restore vital marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs.
The aim is to empower coastal communities to sustainably earn livelihoods from ocean-based activities while enhancing the resilience of marine ecosystems against various pressures, ensuring they continue to provide essential services for generations to come.

🌍 World Environment Day – Our Land, Our Future 🌱
As we celebrate #WorldEnvironmentDay today, the focus is on land restoration, combating desertification, and fostering drought resilience. Climate change, urbanization and agricultural pressures, threaten ecosystem biodiversity and lead to land degradation. This, in turn, escalates the risk of erosion, species extinction, and loss of vital ecosystem services, adversely impacting community livelihoods.
In Mauritius🇲🇺, UNDP and the GEF are partnering to support local conservation and restoration efforts. The Sustainable Land Management Project aims to achieve Land Degradation Neutrality and mainstream conservation and sustainable use of ecosystem services into coastal zone management. Learn more:

SIDS report high rates of mobilizing public finance but lag in accessing private finance, which highlights the challenges of scale that is a barrier to private investment for most SIDS.
UNDP supported #Mauritius🇲🇺 to develop its SDG Investor Map, which aims to attract private capital to areas of high impact on sustainable development. The map identifies 6 priority sectors namely Renewable Resources, Infrastructure, Services, Education, Healthcare and Food & Beverage.

Did you know that Small Island Developing States 🏝️ were first recognized as a special case both for their environment & development at the 1992 Earth Summit held in Brazil? This event set a new blueprint for international action on the environment & led to the creation of the Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, which is held every 10 years:
️➡️Barbados hosted the 1st SIDS Conference in 1994, resulting in the Barbados Programme of Action, which prescribed specific actions that would enable SIDS to achieve sustainable development.
➡️The 2nd Edition was held in Mauritius in 2005. The Mauritius Strategy was adopted to complement and address remaining gaps in implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action.
➡️ In 2014, Samoa hosted the 3rd SIDS Conference, charting a fresh course for sustainable development in small islands. The SAMOA Pathway addresses the current vulnerabilities of SIDS & outlines a framework tailored specifically to their unique challenges.

Most #SIDS are Large Ocean States, with ocean territories over 20 times larger than their land area. #mauritius claims an Exclusive Economic Zones of 2.3 million square kilometres, which represent a huge potential for its blue economy sector.
UNDP’s Blue Economy investments total US$210 million, including 17 Ecosystem & Biodiversity projects in SIDS worth $71 million. Learn how UNDP is helping small islands to realize the maximum potential of their blue economies through sustainable, low emission and climate resilient ocean use by 2030👇

Small Island Developing States 🏝 are among the most affected by climate change impacts. Did you know that from 1970 to 2020, #SIDS lost US$ 153 billion due to weather, climate and water-related hazards? This represents an average of 2.1% of GDP due to climate disasters, compared to 0.3% for other countries.
In #Mauritius🇲🇺, climate change threatens the country's long-term economic & ecosystem resilience, manifested in above-average annual sea level rise, frequent storms and disaster shocks. This resulted in socioeconomic losses in the range of US$ 160 million to 245 million US$.

🏝Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are a distinct group of 39 States and 18 Associate Members of United Nations regional commissions, located in three geographical regions, namely the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea (AIS).
🏡 Home to approximately 65 million people, SIDS face unique social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities, which are exacerbated by climate change.
UNDP’s ‘Rising Up for SIDS’ Offer accelerates transformative development based on digital transformation, blue economy and climate action, with innovative finance as a central, cross-cutting enabler. In the past decade, UNDP and partners have invested about US$ 400 million per year in SIDS, including Mauritius & Seychelles.

Small Island Developing States 🏝 face a unique set of challenges. Their small size, geographic remoteness & narrow resources often make them vulnerable to exogenous economic, social, & environmental shocks.
Despite this, #SIDS are at the forefront of solutions, aiming to expand their blue economies, implement digital technologies, combat climate change and increase access to finance.

Global Tourism Resilience Day [2/2]
For small island developing states like Mauritius, tourism is a major source of income, foreign currency earnings, and employment. In Mauritius, the UNDP has been working with the Government and other stakeholders to support the resilience of the Tourism Sector, which was particularly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The SDG Investor Map, which aims to attract private capital to areas of high impact on sustainable development, identifies ‘Eco-Tourism Development and Value Chains’ as an Investment Opportunity Area (IOA). Investments directed to this IOA aim at enhancing the participation of communities and local providers and suppliers in tourism value generation, and reducing environmental harm caused by the industry.
On today’s Global Tourism Resilience Day, explore how SDG-aligned investment in the tourism sector can increase its resilience👇

World Wetlands Day 2024
Wetlands are ecosystems, in which water is the primary factor controlling the environment and the associated plant and animal life. These lands are critical to people and nature, given their environmental and socio-economic contributions to sustainable development and human wellbeing.
Mauritius is home to several wetlands and three Ramsar Sites, namely the Rivulet Terre Rouge Estuary Bird Sanctuary, the Blue Bay Marine Park, and the Pointe D’Esny Wetland. These sites support rare and unique faunal and floral biodiversity and provide important climate change mitigation functions such as flood control, sediment trapping and shoreline stabilization.
On today’s #WorldWetlandsDay, let us acknowledge the intrinsic value of these ecosystems.
