Hi, we received a call regarding an injured turtle near Flat block - D / Hithadhoo this morning. 🐢

Upon arrival, our rangers found an injured Red-eared Slider which had a crack on the carapace.
(Damaged Marginal scutes & a missing Nuchal)
Looking at the injuries, we believe the turtle had fallen from one of the flat apartments.
Our rangers attended to the wound with Saline water, diluted Betadine, Vaseline and is under monitoring.
Thankfully the turtle is doing well & appears healthy.

General info 🍃
The red-eared slider gets its name from the small, red stripe around its ears, or where its ears would be, and from its ability to slide quickly off rocks and logs into the water.
They usually feed on earthworms, crickets, aquatic snails, plants, leafy greens & shrimps.
These freshwater turtles are common around the world as pets & are highly invasive.

If you have any information regarding the owner, please contact our hotline for further assistance.

An eye opener for all of us after the chlorine dump at Kimbivau Hithadhoo !
Usually we don’t see or notice most of these marine animals when visiting rocky or sandy beaches. These are just a handful of species from hundreds that we came across during the investigation today. Most of the washed up carcasses were juvenile fishes to cephalopods including squids & octopuses, to small crustaceans like shrimps & crabs. 🦀 🐟
Carcasses of different types of sea slugs and nudibranchs & eels were discovered as well.
We are likely to find more species during the following tidal change as the chlorine on the beach may be washed back in the ocean.
Will keep you posted 🙌🏽

Reports came in today regarding strong odor similar to bleach from Kimbivau beach area.
Our rangers attended the scene immediately and upon further inspection found;
15 expired chlorine buckets of JAL AQUA 25KG each used for water treatment, swimming pool treatment & industrial sterilisation. ⚠️

Our staff moved all the buckets from the water to the back shore for investigation.

Since chlorine can harm aquatic life including fishes, corals & plants by damaging their proteins or destroying cell walls, lots of dead fishes & other marine species are being washed up in the area.
Chlorine can also react with other materials in sea water to create harmful compounds.

During this drastic event, we kindly request all citizens to refrain from visiting the area and to wear a protective mask if passing by 😷
DO NOT collect or eat any washed up fishes in the area ❌

Our team has investigated the matter & is being forwarded to the relevant authorities.

HAWKSBILL SEA TURTLES 🐢
Several characteristics of the hawksbill sea turtle distinguish it from other sea turtle species. Its elongated, tapered head ends in a beak-like mouth and its beak is more sharply pronounced and hooked than others.
Have you ever seen a Hawksbill in person? Visit us for a snorkelling trip with our guides and we assure you a atleast one siting, Insha Allah !
