Walitsani tours and travel had a privilege to attend a three days training that took place at GIZ Office (Cluster Building Area 43/498, Lilongwe, Malawi). Sequa, a German Development Organization, delivered this important training within the framework of the GIZ MIERA Program. The Workshop tackled on two topics:
A. International Trade Fair Participation
• Maximize your trade fair success: Proven strategies for preparation, participation and follow-up
B. Sustainable Tourism
• The importance of sustainable tourism and how to develop a simple sustainability policy based on your self-assessment
• Sustainable Tourism Communication

Our team has been equipped with international trade fair strategies and sustainable tourism knowledge that will be implemented in running Walitsani Tours and Travel.

HISTORICAL THURSDAY

Cultural & Museum Centre Karonga (CMCK)

The Cultural & Museum Centre Karonga (CMCK), commonly called Karonga Museum was constructed through EU funding and officially opened by former President Bingu wa Mutharika in November 2004.The central exhibition entitled ‘Malawi from Dinosaurs to Democracy’ focuses on 240 million years of Karonga via milestones such as prehistoric landscapes, animals and early humans and their way of life, archaeological records, history of slave trade and the colonial era, Malawi under Dr. Banda, culture and traditions of Karonga people. The main exhibit is a life-size replica skeleton of the Malawisaurus (Malawi Lizards), whose virtually intact 120-million-year-old fossil skeleton was discovered in 1924 in Karonga District. There is also a superb sequence of displays on human evolution, including a replica of the 2.5-million-year-old Hominid’s jawbone discovered near Chilumba in 1991.It is the world’s oldest-known relict of the genus Homo (the same genus as modern humans).

HISTORICAL FEATURES

St. Peter’s Cathedral

Located in the Likoma island, St Peter’s Cathedral is the principal Church of the Anglican Diocese of Northern Malawi. After the foundation stone of the Cathedral was laid by Bishop Gerald Trower in 1903, the cathedral was dedicated in 1905 and completed by Bishop Thomas Cathrew Fisher in 1911.Native granite was used in the cathedral’s construction, while other materials were carried over from mainland and other countries, including bricks, timber, lime and cement. Soil from Jerusalem was placed under the high altar. It is said to be the third largest cathedral in Central Africa and the same size as Wi******er Cathedral in the UK. It's beautiful stained-glass windows, elaborate stonework and sheer scale convey the seal of the missionary creator’s religions conviction. The security guards will happily give you a tour of the cathedral. Ask to climb the tower for the spectacular views. If you are lucky to be here on Sunday, joining the vibrant service and hearing the choir’s beautiful singing is an unforgettable experience. The cathedral is less than 500m inland from the ferry terminal.

Mua Mission and Kungoni

The KuNgoni Centre of Culture and Art was established in 1976 on the grounds of the Mua Mission. Its aim is to train local sculptors and improve local incomes, and visitors can watch talented artists carve elaborate sculptures from a block of wood. The works are sold in the shop attached to the KuNgoni Centre and in shops around the region. Also located within the KuNgoni Centre is the Chamare Museum, which has a very valuable exhibition focusing on the three ethnic groups (Chewa, Ngoni and Yao) living in the Mua area. A highlight of the museum is a spectacular display of hundreds of Gule Wamkuru masks. The KuNgoni Centre is located in the village of Mua in Dedza district, about 60 km from Salima and a 2 hr. 30 min drive from Lilongwe.

FUN FACTS

Feeding pigeons in San Francisco is illegal.

Section 486 of the municipal police code prohibits the feeding of pigeons in San Francisco. The state made the decision to make the feeding of any bird or wild animal illegal, this is because of the negative impacts which it has on the birds. By overfeeding the birds, they are more likely to become dependent on humans and will lose their natural ability to forage for food. Violators of this law can be fined hundreds of dollars and cited – you’d better keep those breadcrumbs to yourself next time you visit San Francisco.
