Playa Akumal public access has been re-routed away from the fork in the road at the entrance just - after the famous archway. Protestors (from private tour operators) have blocked the road to North Akumal -approximately 100 metres from the archway- as a demand to re-open the old route into the beach. The access is on the private property of Centro Ukana (Centro Ecological Akumal) The intent of this non profit organization has always been to protect the property- while maintaining free, safe, public access to the community and visitors to Akumal. IT REMAINS _OPEN_ AND SAFE.
There is a way into the beach and it's free safe and orderly-See video below... Updates on this protest and the access for tourists will be communicated. The authorities of the municipality and representatives from the cooperatives and the Centro Ecological Akumal are in communication. May a solution be resolved for all that wish to work, play and live in the once pristine tropical reef... sea grass - beach and tropical flora and fauna -heaven on earth....I am sending my strongest best wishes...prayers, good energy... for Akumal...as this is a cross roads for the future of this community, land and destination. My hope is that those that are looking at the short term -do not shoot themselves in the foot-or in this case in the pocket....when there is still an open access and enough for all.
