Did you know?

Today could be that day when 502 years ago, tal Tulum was first seen by the Spaniards.

It was May 3th, and Juan the Grijalva was arriving to Cozumel with 4 ships under his command, his uncle the Governor of Cuba, sent him out to explore previous reports about the great riches of Yucatan.

About 3 days after having explored 3 towns of Cozumel Grijalva and company continued towards the south begging an analysis of the eastern coast of the continent.

After sailing one day away from Cozumel they observed 3 cities separated from each other for about 2.5 miles. One of those was the city that Diaz called “The Mayan Seville’’ this is a copy of his report:

We toured this coast day and night and the next day close to sunset, we saw a city or town, so large that the city of Seville could not seem bigger or better; and it had a in it a very large tower.
Along the coast many Indians walked with flags that rose and fell, perhaps signaling us to approach; but The Capitan said no. Juan Díaz, Chronicler of the Grijalva’s expedition.

: blue extracted from plants and stones after years of in

The color blue was used by the ancient Maya to paint their palaces or and was extracted from the same

After a little more than a year of tests and investigations, Mayan natives achieved a fact that they themselves described as historical, which consisted of the extraction of the Mayan blue color of plants and stones, just as their ancestors did.

This was announced by the sculptor, Luis Manuel May Ku, through his Facebook account where he posted the following: “We have managed to extract the blue from the ch’oj !!! (Indigo, Indigófera suffruticosa Mill) ”.

He explained that this achievement was thanks to the help of a group of residents of the ancient Mayan city of Cobá, established today in the municipality of Tulum, where they carried out the tests and after several attempts they managed to obtain the Mayan blue color, a very characteristic color of the Mexican Caribbean.

The Mayan native explained that the investigations before achieving these results began in the month of October last year where the first thing they did was to locate the plant that gives life to this Mayan blue color and after several weeks they managed to get the first seeds in the month of December.

It was then, that from January to April 2019 they first saw the plantations of this herb in a village located in the village known as Xunan Cab, also located in the ancient Mayan city of Cobá.

Finally, after having grown enough plants, the experiments began and last Monday, after mixing herbs, stones, powders and with much patience, for the first time in a long time, the extraction of the blue color used by the ancient Maya was achieved to paint their palaces or murals.

“The inhabitants of Coba who participated in this feat are Justin May (guardian of the plant) Nathanael Vela, Lorenzo Vela, Raúl May, Noé Chimal; the owners of Mayan Village Xunáan Kab, Leopoldo Chimal, Hilaria Chooc and their children Arturo and Carlos and my friend Alma Valencia Arana have managed to extract the precious blue, the main ingredient for the famous Mayan blue ”, concluded the sculptor.

A OF IN .

To the adventure So it was, without knowing what I was going to find, as I landed at the then small airport in Cancun. It was the month of October 1993. I arrived loaded with my backpack, the Lonely Planet guide that was only published in English and an analog camera that covered my few photographic concerns of that time.
From the first moment seemed an artificial place with its large hotels dedicated to a massive sun and beach tourism. As soon as I was able to rent a VW Beetle and I set out to tour what was the first of my trips on the Route in a rain that did not leave me for the next two weeks. This is how I started a trip that years later is not over yet. This time again I decide to rent a car, although this time much more modern.
* Remember that the easiest and fastest way to visit Tulum and the Riviera Maya is by car. Renting one is very easy

Return to the Maya to see how it has changed. To travel again the roads of the Yucatan and, above all, to return to the places that I could not enjoy years ago. And among them a proper name, an almost mythical place become a symbol of pre-Colombian Mexico: Tulum. The image of its Mayan constructions rising over a cliff surrounded by a celestial sea has become a worldwide recognized advertising claim.

There is no doubt that the of the old Mayan ruins has been a powerful advertising claim that has attracted millions of tourists. And it has been the basis on which a powerful hotel and service infrastructure has been created. Over the years, this tourist network has become widespread and has spread throughout the coast of the Riviera Maya, causing some perversion of the cultural and historical values of the Mayan legacy.

On the positive side, it must be said that different excavation and restoration projects financed by foreign institutions have been launched, especially from the USA. And also by the Central American governments that have discovered in these ruins of the past a real economic mana. And it is that tourism generates a lot, a lot of money here...

Relax on ’s Beach.

If what you are looking for on your is beach and more Tulum beach may be your ideal . Most hotels have sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach. So you can spend your days bathing in the warm Caribbean, stroll along a white sand beach, fine as flour, and enjoy and sunsets under trees.

But Tulum is much more than beach. On the coastal road that leads to the Sian Ka´an Reserve there are numerous , beach clubs and venues. From the beach of Tulum, boat trips are organized to see the ruins of Tulum from the sea, to continue towards the coral reef. There you can snorkel and hopefully, in addition to goldfish, see a swimming nearby.

This is an activity that is organized from the beach itself. Many of the in the area, organized in a cooperative, have converted to the business as it reports more money than fishing. For between 250 and 300 pesos you can enjoy this activity that I recommend. The seabed is not a , but sailing in front of the ruins of Tulum and seeing The raised on the cliffs of the coast is .
