Do you want to spend a weekend on a beautiful remote beach? How about doing that while also helping endangered species?

With our “Sea Turtle Experience” Program, you will get the chance to learn and collaborate with Campamento Tortuguero Mayto on some of their sea turtle protection activities:

Firstly, you will be able to camp on-site for a more hands-on experience which will allow you to learn directly alongside the biologists and staff.

In the evenings, you will be able to join the daily hatchling release, and aid hundreds of baby turtles to the waters edge.

Last but not least, you will be able to participate on a beach patrol to observe nesting female turtles and consequently, collect their eggs and return them to the protected hatchery!

Our open water boat excursions are also available! How does observing local marine fauna in their natural habitat sound? While doing so, you will also be able to enjoy the beauty of the vast mexican landscapes that these species form a part of.

Mayto's magical night skies, sunsets and dawns are completely free of charge!!

With “Sea Turtle Experience”, take part in sea turtle protection activities and explore Mexican treasures through conservation.

Hidden Horizons MX was created in coordination with Campamento Tortuguero Mayto to highlight the importance of international engagement on Mexican shores.

HH are therefore the volunteer coordinators for all overseas participants interested in volunteering at our conservation project. Our main focus is to demonstrate the intricate details of wildlife conservation while engaging with local communities. By offering international volunteering opportunities, scientific exchange programs and group expeditions along the mountain ranges and coastal paths of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, we aim for all participants to learn, observe and fall in love with Conservation Biology, while exploring Mexican culture. From wildlife conservation to plastic recycling, to reforestation and social community work, there are many options that can be adapted to your specific interests. If you are an international participant (not originally from Mexico) please enquire with Hidden Horizons MX at "[email protected]”, about all the possible options, or visit our website at “www.hiddenhorizonsmx.com" for more information!

We can’t wait to explore Mexican treasures with you!

Campamento Tortuguero Mayto (Sea turtle conservation project) needs your help!

Unfortunately, the strong waves caused by the passage of Hurricane KAY (September 2022) destroyed a large part of our sea turtle conservation camp, taking with it most of its facilities and infrastructure (including the kitchen, camping area, incubation hatchery and protected nests, palm trees, gardens and living areas).

We are aware of the type of settlement that we have had in this risk zone for 17 years, as well as the extreme dynamics of this coastline, of which we have carried out detailed studies, facing and awaiting the effects of nature. However, it is the only option that has guaranteed us the establishment and continuity of our work and research projects. We are at the peak of the nesting season, and we are preparing for the reception of school groups that are a fundamental part of our operations.

We appreciate the concern and support you give us to get us through every crisis we face - and this time we have no doubt that the rebuilding and restoration of our home will be possible with your support.

SEE Turtles will be matching all donations via the following link (https://www.seeturtles.org/mayto). We would really appreciate any help that you could give us, in order for us to continue with our protection and conservation activities.

Thank you,

The Hidden Horizons MX and Campamento Tortuguero Mayto Team.

GROUP EXPEDITIONS: CONSERVATION PROJECTS OF CABO CORRIENTES

Get a glimpse into the conservation projects of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco with a group of friends. The itinerary for this program starts and ends in the popular tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta, and steadily moves along the coast of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, visiting local community projects along the way, in Pizota and Mayto, before heading inland towards the Sierra Madre mountain range, where the Agua Fría Ecological Reserve is located.

Participants will engage in the main activities that are designed by the sea turtle protection program Campamento Tortuguero Mayto, including night patrols, nest incubation monitoring and hatchlings release; as well as the work at Mayto’s Centre for Environmental Education. At Pizota, participants will have the opportunity to hike to local waterfalls, learn and observe the diversity of the region, and experience the lifestyle of a traditional coastal community; all guided by a local expert. And in Agua Fría Ecological Reserve, participants will have the opportunity to use camera traps and tracking methods to learn about the dynamics of the ecosystem; bird-watching at a local sanctuary and learn about the important aspects of permaculture. The program schedule and activities will depend on the number of participants in each group.

Sea turtles have roamed the world's oceans for at least 150 million years. These reptiles have modified fin-like limbs and have compact and hydrodynamic shells. Currently, there are 7 different species of sea turtles in the world, and they can be classified into two groups: those with a hard shell (Cheloniidae) which includes, the olive Ridley, green, hawksbill, kemps Ridley, loggerhead and flat-back ; and the softshell turtles (Dermochelyidae) which only includes the leatherback sea turtle. At Campamento Tortuguero Mayto, the sea turtle nesting season runs from May through to February. However, conservation and protection efforts take place year-round. Throughout the season, three of the previously mentioned species can be found nesting in Mayto (olive Ridley, green (Pacific or black) and leatherback), whereas the hawksbill sea turtle uses the surrounding waters as a feeding ground.

Unfortunately, sea turtles face various threats caused by human activities, and as a result, they are now classified on the IUCN red list ranging from vulnerable to critically endangered. Their main threats which directly or indirectly affect their life cycle and their habitats include coastal development (urbanization), ocean and beach pollution, consumption and commercialization of eggs, meat and shell, fishing bycatch, and climate change. One of our goals at Hidden Horizons MX and Campamento Tortuguero Mayto is to raise awareness about the daily activities that put these organisms at risk, while teaching participants about their biology and conservation efforts.

Sea Turtle Research and Conservation Project: Campamento Tortuguero Mayto

Campamento Tortuguero Mayto is a non-profit civil association focused on sea turtle research and conservation in Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, Mexico. It was founded in 2005 and works closely with the 10 coastal communities of cabo Corrientes in order to protect four species of sea turtle: Olive Ridley, Pacific Green, Hawksbill and Leatherback.

The project is solely funded by the students and volunteers that participate in our program year after year. Therefore, our main objective is to provide these students with the necessary tools to develop an understanding in sea turtle fieldwork biology, through educational and practical workshops, while at the same time making the experience memorable and enjoyable.

The main source of income for the local community is fishery activities, meaning that their work takes place in the same area as our research. The success of this project could not have been achieved without the support of the communities surrounding Mayto. The fishermen and divers come into contact with sea turtles on a daily basis and now also form an important role in their protection. These relationships between scientists and the local community allow students to experience the ins and outs of scientific research, while also being witness to different cultures coming together for one same objective, a passion for the ocean.
