Years later Juarez made it his capital during the Reform wars and was almost assasinated inside the building.! Inside José Clemente Orozco painted murals of Hidalgo. One of the tactics the mexican government used to disappear dissidents was called "Flights of death", Vuelos de la muerte. A person was arrested/kidnapped and taken to a military base outside of México city. Later the prisoner was taken to Acapulco, where the military had a small airstrip and base. The prisoner was held in a small building dubbed the 'bungalow'. Later the prisoner was taken outside, blindfolded and executed. The body was placed inside a body bag. About 5 bodies could fit inside the plane. Out in the ocean the bodies were dumped in the ocean. There were hundreds of these flights documented in military flight logs and documents.
In 2002 and again in 2021 there were commissions set up to investigate these disappearances and two now generals were fingered as having given the orders for these operations. But to date no one has been arrested or punished for these crimes.!!

In the end the government defeated the leftist mexican guerrilla groups. In guadalajara, the 23 sept. Communist league crumbled in 1974.
The one-party dictatorship of México would go on to rule mexico until 2000.
The students, teachers and peasants, many of them killed or disappeared...lost. But their struggle lives on, carried forward by a new generation. Now their struggle is painted on the walls of the barrio that witnessed their fight and death.
If you visit guadalajara, I can bring you to the murals and tell you their stories.

These are the new murals in the barrio of San Andres in Guadalajara. The murals pay homage to the students armed resistance movement of the late '60s-'70s. In these socially turbulent times, students, teachers, and rural people banded together to form guerrilla groups to fight the government. In Guadalajara, the main guerrilla group was the september 23 communist league. The groups birthplace was the barrio of San Andres.
The government responded with the "Dirty War" (1964-1982). The government kidnapped, tortured, imprisoned and disappeared, and killed many students and teachers during the Dirty War.
These murals are so we don't forget their struggle and their sacrifices.!

In mexico we have outdoor street markets called Tianguis. The origin of the Tianguis dates back to pre-Hidpanic times, when Mesoamerican civilizations established itinerant markets for the exchange of goods and products. The term 'Tianguis' derives from the Nahuatl word "tianquiztli", which was used to describe these markets.
Over the centuries, the Tianguis has evolved and adapted to changes in mexican society. During colonial times, the Tianguis became a place for the exchange of goods brought from Europe and Asia, merging prehispanic traditions with cultural influences of the Spaniards.
These markets are usually set up in strategic locations, like squeres or main avenues, and are held on specific days of the week. A Tianguis traditionally offers a wide variety of products, such as: seafood, vegetables, animals, bikes, clothes, shoes, jewelry, meat, artesanal crafts, books, artwork, cleaning products,hygiene,make-up,motorcycles,cars,tools, animal food, game consoles, medicine, cellphones, and much more stuff. Don't forget the services offered by vendors like home internet, cellphone services, massages, card readings, palm reading. You will be surprised what you find for sell at a Tianguis.
BOOK THE TIANGUIS TOUR I CREATED.!! The only Tianguis tour in Guadalajara.!! I take you to three Tianguis on a sunday.!! Experience the vibrant, authentic atmosphere of a Tianguis.!!
