Do you know what a groin hernia is?
An inguinal or groin hernia occurs when the content of the abdomen protrudes through a weak spot in the groin area. This results in a bulge that usually starts as a small or unperceivable protuberance that enlarges with time, it can be painful during cough, exercise, or lifting heavy objects. Even though is not necessarily dangerous, it can lead to life-threatening complications.

An inguinal hernia doesn´t improve on its own; the only treatment is surgery which can be done by either laparoscopy or robotic approach.

Do you know what minimally invasive surgery is?

Laparoscopy surgery revolutionized the world by changing how surgery is done. The surgery transitioned from large incisions called “open surgery” into a small incision the size of a fingertip, called “laparoscopic surgery”; with the gain of experience with this approach, almost every abdominal surgery is doable with laparoscopic surgery.

Recently, the surgery world is changing again, as the transition from laparoscopic to robotic surgery is on the way; robotic surgery is performed through small incisions too, but the inherent advantages offered by the technology improve the quality and sharpness of the surgical field, allowing us to do more precise movements; consequently, the results for the patient are less bleeding and less conversion to open surgery, all of which translates into fewer in-hospital stay, less postoperative pain and return to normal activities in less time.
